PART I: PLANNING
Title of Lesson
Solving Two-Step Problems
Source
Is this lesson original idea? If not, from what source did I borrow this lesson?
This is the lesson my cooperating teacher would have been teaching on this day.
Subject Area (s)Mathematics
Grade Level2nd grade
Curriculum Standards
2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Also, 2.OA.1. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one-and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Description and Background Information
Describe the lesson’s activities and content to provide a clear overview of the lesson.
The Problem Solving Mat, which will have a sample question, will serve as the hook of this lesson. The teacher will give the students a problem to solve which will lead to the discussion of two step word problems. The teacher will place a problem on the board and go through the problem step by step for the students. The teacher will work through a problem with the students on the worksheet. Questions will be asked such as “How do you know when to add or subtract in a two step word problem or can parts and wholes be determined from two step problems?” The teacher will have the student complete a problem by themselves to see if they fully understand. The students will complete a worksheet on two step word problems to show they have internalized the knowledge. The lesson will be concluded by the teacher reviewing the two step word problems process. The teacher will wrap up the lesson by telling the students to practice the process for homework with his or her parents. The students will complete a chapter nine test which will include two step word problems.
Lesson ObjectivesWhat will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson? Make sure that your objective(s) are measurable. The student will be able to solve two step word problems.
Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs
How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material? How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept? How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English?
For students who do not understand the material, the teacher will work with them on the two-step problems step by step.
For students who have already mastered the concept, the teacher will allow them to help other students or review more problems for practice.
For students who are presently learning English, the material will
be sent to the TESOL teacher.
Statement of Purpose
Why is it important for the students to learn this content?
It is important for students to learn this content so they will be able to solve two step word problems. Problem solving is a part of everyday life so it is important for students to know how to do it.
Materials and Resources
What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve the stated objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the students need? What other resources are needed? Will you use resource speakers?
The teachers will use the Lumens, Problem Solving Mat, and www.pearsonsuccess.net. The students will need pencils, math journals, and the math worksheet.
Anticipatory Set What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention? What is “hook” that will serve as a focus for the lesson’s activities?
The Problem Solving Mat which will have a sample question will serve as the hook of this lesson.
Part II: IMPLEMENTATION
Pre-assessmentHow will I find out what students already know about this topic?
The teacher will give the students a problem to solve which will lead to the discussion of two step word problems.
Teacher Modeling or Demonstration
What will I do to show students what is expected?
The teacher will place a problem on the board and go through the problem step by step for the students.
Guided PracticeWhat will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task?
The teacher will work through a problem with the students on the worksheet.
Checking for UnderstandingWhat questions will you ask to determine if students understand so far? What techniques or strategies will be used to determine if students understand so far?
Questions will be asked such as, “How do you know when to add or subtract in a two step word problem or can parts and wholes be determined from two step problems?” The teacher will have the student complete a problem by themselves to see if they fully understand.
Independent Practice
What will students do by themselves to show that they have internalized the knowledge?
The students will complete a worksheet on two step word problems to show they have internalized the knowledge.
ClosureHow will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? How will you wrap up the lesson to reinforce concepts taught during the lesson?
The lesson will be concluded by the teacher reviewing the two step word problems process. The teacher will wrap up the lesson by telling the students to practice the process for homework with his or her parents.
Assessment(attach to lesson plan)
What will students do to demonstrate what they have learned?
The students will complete a chapter nine test which will include two step problems.
Extension ActivitiesWhat can students do at home or in the classroom to apply the knowledge or skills? How could you use your colleagues or community agencies to improve student performance?
The students could work with someone at home to think of two step word problems to solve. They can relate it to things that they enjoy or are familiar with. Colleagues or community agencies could work with students in his or her weak areas to improve performance.
Technology
How will you use technology to assist students with learning the concepts? What technology will you use to enhance the delivery and comprehension of your content?
The Lumens will be used in helping to learn the concepts. The website, www.pearsonsuccess.net, will be used to enhance the delivery of the concept.
Connection Across the Curriculum
How will you connect this lesson with other content areas across the curriculum?
The Arts: The students can write a two step word problem and illustrate a story to go along with it.
Health: The students can write a two step word problem dealing with health.
Physical Education: The students can stand up and stretch in between the lesson with the teacher’s permission.
ELA: The students can discuss two-step problems in reading.
Science: Students will discuss two-step problems in experiments.
SS: Students will discuss two-step problems in history.
PART III: REFLECTION
Strengths
Describe the strengths of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management.Describe the strengths of student engagement.
A strength of teaching this lesson was the engagement of the students because they enjoyed telling making up his or her own two step problem. When they were making up problems and solving them then I knew they understood the concept. The students were very engaged in the lesson once they understood the concept more. When some students did not understand then those students were worked with individually
Weaknesses
Describe the weaknesses of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management. Describe the weaknesses of student engagement.
The only weakness I had was that I realized that you have to be very clear when teaching new concepts. I do not think I was very clear at the beginning when teaching the concept of two step word problems.
Suggestions for Improvement
What would you change when teaching this lesson again?
When teaching this lesson again I would be very clear and possibly use manipulatives to help the students understand more.
