What’s wrong with the current LearnICU site? What’s wrong with the current LearnICU site?

• The current site does not reflect trends and user needs– Web 2.0 technology has raised user expectations

of how a website should function• Social networking sites have impacted user expectations

• Hard to find information on the current site– If users cannot find information they need quickly,

they will move on

What is Web 2.0?What is Web 2.0?

• Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more than just retrieve information. They can build on the interactive facilities of "Web 1.0" to provide "Network as platform" computing, allowing users to run software-applications entirely through a browser. Users can own the data on a Web 2.0 site and exercise control over that data.

These sites may have an "Architecture of participation" that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it.

• 2009 US Department of Education study revealed that on average, online students out performed those receiving face-to-face instruction

• 1 in 6 higher education students are enrolled in online curriculum• Shrinking travel budgets necessitate online learning• Time constraints are forcing adult learners to look for educational offerings that

meet their schedules• Delivery of more timely information in a more timely manner• Over twenty percent of all U.S. higher education students were taking at least

one online course in the fall of 2007. These students will most likely expect online offerings for continuing education throughout their careers
