Redemption defined

Redemption FROM what?

Redemption FOR what?

Redemption BY what?

Redemption NOW what?

Page 2: Redemption Part 2

The Trinity and Salvation

Redemption is a release effected by the payment of a ransom.

This word carries the notion with it that means to buy back. That is to say, there was something first of all that was in your possession but then it fell into a position of bondage, in which it was held by another, and to redeem means to restore back unto original ownership.

Turn to Romans 3:24-25Rom. 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; Rom. 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;

Page 3: Redemption Part 2

The imagery behind this Greek word (apolutrosis) comes from the ancient slave market.

It meant paying the necessary ransom to obtain the prisoner or slaves release.

The only adequate payment to redeem sinners from sin’s slavery and it’s deserved punishment was in Christ. And this was paid to God to satisfy His justice and holy wrath against sin.

Luke 1:68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,

Luke 2:38 At that very moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Luke 21:28 “But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Page 5: Redemption Part 2

Rom. 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

Rom. 8:23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

1Cor. 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,

Eph. 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace

Page 6: Redemption Part 2

Eph. 1:14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.

Eph. 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Col. 1:14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Heb. 9:12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Heb. 9:15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

Heb. 11:35 Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection;

DEATHHeb. 2:14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,

Heb. 2:15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.

2Tim. 1:10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,

DEATH1Cor. 15:54 But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory.

1Cor. 15:55 “O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?”

1Cor. 15:56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;

1Cor. 15:57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

DEATH

The fear of death and its spiritual bondage has been brought to an end through the work of Christ.

John 8:51 - “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.”

John 11:26 - and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Redeemed from what?

DEVIL

Mark 3:27 - “But no one can enter the strong man’s house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.”

There must be One who is stronger than Satan in order to enter his domain (strong man’s household).

Bind him (restrain his actions)

Free (plunder) people who are under his control.

Only Jesus has this kind of power over the devil.

DEVIL

1 John 5:19 - We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

Ephesians 6:12 - For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

1 Peter 5:8 - Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

2 Corinthians 4:4 - in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Page 13: Redemption Part 2

DEVIL

1 John 3:8 - the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.

Understanding the works of the devil

Matthew 13:19 - Parable of the SowerPoneros – this is evil in active opposition to good.

The word for the evil one is “poneros”

Example – The poneros man wants to drag everyone else down with him to destruction

DEVILLuke 8:12 (Parable of the Sower)

The Greek word for devil is “diabolos” – comes from “dia” which means through and from “ballo” which means to cast or to throw.

So the devil has the ability to throw thoughts through the mind.

Mark 4:15 (Parable of the Sower)In the Hebrew Satan means adversary. He is the one who is constantly accusing and against us.

By the way it doesn’t show in our English translations but the word Satan is preceded by the definite article “the.” And that is to emphasize that he isn’t just an adversary he is the adversary.

SIN

John 8:34 - Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.

Romans 6:6 - knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;

Romans 6:16-20 - “slaves to sin”

Page 16: Redemption Part 2

Redeemed for what?

Some reasons for which I am NOT redeeemed

Because I am valuable and now God can accomplish with me what He could never have done without me.

Help God out in missions.

In order to have my “best life now”

For me to be autonomous and still live the way I always lived except now I get to say “once saved is always saved.”

Page 17: Redemption Part 2

Ex. 9:16 - “But, indeed, for this reason I have allowed you to remain, in order to show you My power and in order to proclaim My name through all the earth.”

Ex. 14:4 - “Thus I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.” And they did so.”

Psalm 106:8 - Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name, That He might make His power known.

Redeemed now what?

1 Peter 4:11 - Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever.
