Recommended Commercial Foods

This list of recommended commercial dog foods is based on my own experience and extensive research into the best dog food producers.

There are a few caveats. Be aware that any commercial dry or canned food has been cooked, usually at high temperature. The high heat kills vitamins and enzymes. This is why I recommend you add those back into your dog’s diet.

The more I have researched this topic, the more convinced I have become that the only truly healthy diet for your dog is one you prepare yourself.

Having said that, I know that most people are busy and don’t have the time to cook for their pets, let alone themselves.

The good news is that there are more great dog foods out there than ever before. I always stick with small companies who tend to have a more passionate personal approach to their foods.

Usually these premium foods can only be found at small specialty pet stores and natural food stores.

But there are a couple of larger manufacturers that I’ll recommend because you can get them at the big box pet stores.

Note: when you feed dry kibble be sure to add some water! Kibble is dehydrated food and needs some added moisture content for good digestion. Add about 25% water or broth to dry kibble (a little less for baked kibble).

5

Nature’s Variety

Nature’s Variety is a newer company, founded in 2003, by people involved in the meat processing (for humans) business. Their focus is on really high quality foods. They make three brands: Prairie, Instinct, and Raw. All are top notch and I wouldn’t hesitate to use any of them.

"We emphasize feeding meat as opposed to grain to the maximum extent possible," says Dick Countryman, vice president of sales and marketing for MI Industries, makers of Nature's Variety. "Our products are high quality and high meat-based, and that makes them unique in the marketplace."

"We try to give a variety of dietary choices, and venison adds to that. The key to the venison diet is that it is consistent with our feeding strategy, which is rotation," Countryman says.

Typically, a dog owner feeds the same diet continually for the pet's entire lifetime, Countryman says. "A growing body of evidence suggests that this kind of feeding strategy can create various kinds of allergic conditions."

Raw Food Benefits

Heat processing, which is standard in the pet food industry, changes or destroys many important nutrients. In fact, some nutrients now recognized as essential have only been identified in the last few years. Doesn’t it make sense to stay as close to food’s natural state as possible?

Many pet owners have been convinced that so-called corrective diets (a special regimen for allergy, digestive troubles, obesity, etc.) are the best way to improve health problems. They may help certain

6

symptoms simply by providing a change, but may not treat underlying causes. By feeding your pet a diet rich in raw foods, you’re letting nature provide the best - naturally balanced - nutrition.

Some of the Benefits of Raw Foods• minerals better assimilated• vitamins more bioavailable• beneficial antioxidants present• amino acids more bioavailable• natural digestive enzymes still present• probiotics spared• amino acids such as taurine are not destroyed

Some of the Negative Effects of Heat Processing• loss of up to 100% of certain vitamins• loss of up to 60% of certain amino acids• enzymes destroyed• probiotics destroyed• loss of up to 10% of certain fatty acids• fats can become toxic or rancid• oxidation of cholesterol

7

Prairie

In contrast to other dog food brands, Prairie kibble adds freeze dried ingredients to their extruded kibble. This keeps the food much closer to the raw state because their methods have a minimal impact on the vital nutrients that can be harmed by high heat.

They use a process called Bip-Coating in which they coat their kibble with freeze dried raw ingredients. They also add enzymes, probiotics. Amino acids, and essential fatty acids.

Prairie kibble is available in the following:• Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Medley• Beef Meal & Barley Medley• Lamb Meal & Oatmeal Medley• Venison Meal & Millet Medley• Salmon Meal & Brown Rice Medley

Prairie Can Formulas:• Chicken Recipe with Brown Rice• Beef Recipe with Barley• Lamb Recipe with Oatmeal• Venison Recipe with Millet

Homestyle from the Prairie Can Formulas:• Chicken Stew• Beef Stew• Lamb Stew

I’m including some product sheets so you can see the ingredients in several of these formulas. You can see from the first few ingredients what high quality they are, with an attention to protein sources and a limited number of ingredients. A truly “human grade” food line.

Nature’s Variety Raw

Raw Frozen Diets and Raw Freeze DriedRaw is formulated according to the BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet developed by Dr. Billinghurst. The theory behind raw is that not one animal on earth is adapted to eating a cooked food diet.

Your pets are meat eaters, so raw food is the most instinctive and natural form of nutrition they can eat. A diet consisting of raw, fresh meat, organs, ground bone, and fat reflects what they would eat in nature. With natural proportions of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, proteins, and amino acids, raw diets provide wholesome nutrition for the health of your pets. The natural results of such high quality nutrition include increased energy, toned muscles, and a soft, glossy coat!

Their Raw Frozen Dog and Cat Foods are 95% meat, organs, and bone; grain-free; and contain wholesome fruits and vegetables. Their diets are convenient and ready to serve - no mixing, cutting, or measuring.

Nature’s Logic

Nature’s Logic is a new dog diet company that is based on the idea

of delivering all needed nutrients from natural ingredients. They

have the only line of all natural pet foods that use whole foods to

derive all vitamins, minerals, and amino acids for all categories of

products.

Their foods contain no added synthetic taurine (an amino acid that

dogs need more of because they eat primarily meat) or chemically

synthesized vitamins or minerals. The taurine, vitamins, and

minerals in all Nature’s Logic products come from the 100% all

natural food ingredients making up the formulations.

They use what they call “animal plasma”, a product they developed

from dried blood with red cells removed, to provide vitamins and

minerals. They also include Brewer’s yeast for vitamin B complex.

Natura Pet Products

Natura makes great dog food. It has been one of the highest quality

pet food manufacturers since it was founded in 1989. All their foods

are human grade using quality ingredients. Their brands include

Innova, Evo, California Natural, Healthwise, and Karma. They also

make Mother Nature healthy dog biscuits. Their website is

www.naturapet.com

I have not seen a Natura brand that wasn’t top quality. Here are their

brands and philosophy expressed in their own words.

Innova

Innova has been formulated using only fresh, natural, whole

ingredients from each of the five food groups. Considered holistic

foods, Innova comes in several varieties both dry and canned.

• Puppy

36

• Large breed puppy

• Adult

• Large breed adult

• Reduced fat adult

• Senior

• Large breed senior

• Senior plus

Variety is the key to meeting your pet's many nutritional needs.

Innova's healthy mix of nutritious ingredients assures a balanced and

enjoyable meal every time.

The Dairy Group -- Cottage cheese provides plenty of nutrient-rich

calcium, protein, vitamins A and D, and B vitamins.

The Protein Group -- Protein is an integral part of your pet's diet.

And Innova's fresh turkey, chicken and herring meats bring more to

the food dish than just good flavor - they are lean, excellent sources of

protein. High quality meat protein provides all the essential amino

acids required for the proper nutrition of both dogs and cats.

The Vegetable Group -- A bounty of fresh vegetables are found in

Innova pet foods: carrots, Idaho potatoes, alfalfa sprouts and whole

clove Gilroy-grown garlic (high in selenium). These vegetables add the

antioxidant vitamins A and C, carbohydrates, fiber and various

minerals to the diet. And because these vegetables are fresh, whole,

and not pre-processed, the flavors and most of the important nutrients

- including the "protector" antioxidants - are locked in.

37

The Fruit Group -- There's now a new twist to the old axiom about

apples: "An apple a day keeps the veterinarian away!" Apples - and

the nutrients in them - help your pet stay healthy. The fresh, whole

apples used in Innova pet foods provide important "protector"

nutrients, as well as plenty of carbohydrates and fiber, essential for

your pet's good health. The antioxidant vitamin C helps to form

healthy new cells and heal wounds. Potassium promotes

neuromuscular development. And the antioxidants beta-carotene and

vitamin A aid in good vision, bone and tooth development, and

building resistance to infections.

The Grain Group -- All of the grains in Innova pet foods are natural

whole grains, not grain fractions such as bran, gluten, flour, or mids.

Healthful whole grains are important sources of B vitamins,

carbohydrates, iron, fiber, and selenium. Innova's nutritious barley and

brown and white rices provide important complex carbohydrates to

support pet activity and exercise.

Ingredients:

Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Meal, Herring, Apples, Garlic, Potatoes,

Alfalfa Sprouts, Carrots, Cottage Cheese, Milk, Eggs

In addition to these fresh ingredients, Innova contains Whole Ground

Barley and Whole Ground Brown & White Rice. These are quality grain

sources of highly digestible carbohydrates, not pre-processed grain

fractions from other industries.

38

Sunflower Oil and Chicken Fat. These are ultra high-quality sources of

fat... chosen for their skin & coat properties and are rich in Linoleic

acid and omega 3 fatty acids!

Chicken Meal and Herring. Innova contains only low ash, ground

chicken meat & whitefish that provide high quality, highly digestible

protein.

Probiotics Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Casei, Streptococcus

Faecium, Lactobacillus Plantarum are that are under stress from

shipping, showing, surgery, and kennel stays.

Antioxidants Vitamins E, C & A (Beta-Carotene), Selenium, Zinc,

Manganese play a vital role in protecting body cells from the damage

caused by chemicals and environmental pollutants such as cigarette

smoke, exhaust fumes and smog.

Evo

EVO is Natura’s Grain-Free, Meat-Based Pet Food.

While all Natura Pet Products use high-quality meat as the main pet

food ingredient, EVO dog food is completely grain-free. In fact, EVO

39

has the highest protein content of any meat-based dry pet food on the

market and uses whole, fresh meat sources such as turkey, chicken

and herring meal!

EVO dog food provides all the key nutrition received from a raw food

diet with the benefits of modern research. EVO formula is based on

ground chicken and turkey meat, bones, fat, cartilage and connective

tissue. It includes whole, raw fruits and vegetables which contain

health promoting phytochemicals and micronutrients.

EVO is a convenient, complete and balanced supplement to a raw

feeding program.

Ingredients:

Turkey, Chicken, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Herring Meal,

Chicken Fat, Natural Flavors, Egg, Garlic, Apples, Carrots, Tomatoes,

Cottage Cheese, Alfalfa Sprouts, Dried Chicory Root, Taurine, Lecithin,

Rosemary Extract, Vitamins/Minerals, Viable Naturally Occurring

Microorganisms

Innova EVO features a "synbiotic" approach to gastrointestinal health.

A "synbiotic" approach is the use of both a probiotic and a prebiotic

combined in a single product. It is defined as "a mixture of a probiotic

and a prebiotic that beneficially affects the host by improving the

survival and implantation of live microbial dietary supplements in the

gastrointestinal tract, by selectively stimulating the growth and/or by

40

activating the metabolism of one or a limited number of health-

promoting bacteria." Innova EVO is considered to be a true synbiotic

since it provides both live beneficial bacteria (probiotics) and products

of fermentation (prebiotics) that may affect the intestinal microflora in

a positive way.

Natural Vitamins, Minerals, & Micronutrients

Many of the essential nutrients in Innova EVO are derived from the raw

ingredients used in the formula, and not just from vitamin and mineral

supplements. For exacmple, finely ground turkey and chicken bones

and cartilage supply important calcium and collagen which are

important for bone formation and joint health. A variety of shole

vegetables and fruits supply important micronutrients and health-

promoting phytochemicals.

About EVO

An EVOlutionary Approach to Pet Food

When our pets’ ancestors roamed the wild, it wasn’t wheat and corn

they craved to satisfy their energy requirements – their carnivorous

instincts led them to stalk and hunt fresh meat.

Like their ancestors, pets need protein to satisfy their energy

requirements. If that protein comes from grain, the protein value is

reduced since it is less digestible and lacks more of the essential

amino acids needed to build and maintain tissue.

41

By eliminating carbohydrates from grain, which dilutes nutrient

content, EVO can shift dietary proportions to higher levels of protein

instead. In fact, EVO provides high-quality protein at a level that is

among the highest available anywhere. In addition, EVO also contains

a source of viable, naturally occurring microorganisms and has both

Linoleic Acid (Omega-6 Fatty Acid) and Omega-3 Fatty Acids. EVO is

preserved with Vitamin E.

California Natural

California Natural is a hypoallergenic limited ingredients food and is

good to use when your dog is having digestive problems or a food

intolerance that you can’t identify. It uses simple and limited foods

with just one protein, one fat, and one carbohydrate source.

100% lamb meal is used as the only animal protein source while white

and brown rice and sunflower oil provide efficient sources of energy.

Although Taurine, an amino acid, is already present in lamb meal, it

has been supplemented to benefit certain breeds.

42

California Natural also makes

Natura’s Pet Nutrition Philosophy

Natura Pet Products was founded in 1989 by John and Ann

Rademakers and Peter Atkins in Santa Clara, California. Dissatisfied

with the unhealthy ingredients in the pet foods on the market, they

consulted with veterinary nutrition experts to determine the best

sources for pet food ingredients. Working with caring pet professionals

- veterinarians, breeders and nutritionists - Natura asked one key

question: "How do you make the healthiest pet food in the world?"

What they learned won’t surprise you. Dogs and cats are healthiest

45

when they eat the whole, natural foods we would eat ourselves: USDA-

inspected chicken, turkey and lamb, whole grain rice and barley, fresh

fruits and vegetables, and Grade A dairy products. Based on

information from this research, Natura’s Nutritional Philosophy was

developed:

I. Use Only Dog Food Ingredients Which I Would Feel Comfortable

Eating Myself

The bottom line: If I wouldn’t eat it, why would I want to feed it to my

pet? It is important to understand that the pet food industry is the

primary outlet for human by-products. There are ingredients which are

allowed to be used in pet foods that are, at best, scary.

II. Use Whole Pet Food Ingredients That Are Nutrient Rich and

Unaltered. Mother Nature made the grain in its whole state. As such,

it includes nutritious protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and

minerals. Other pet food companies use fractionated grains, which do

not include this balance of natural nutrition.

III. Use Highly Controlled Cooking Methods to Preserve Natural Levels

of Nutrients. Quality control and process management are critical in

making a nutritious pet food. All Natura foods undergo over 121

different quality control checks before being shipped.

IV. Use No Artificial Preservatives, Colors or Additives

Natura will not add anything to the food unless it is nutritious and

healthy for your cat or dog.

46

V. Formulate Using Pet Food Ingredients That Provide the Optimum

Nutritional Profile for Skin and Coat

Getting a good skin and coat is no big secret. It’s just very expensive

to do. You have to use more meat, higher quality sources of fats and

oils, and high levels of vitamins and other nutrients. Natura has a large

investment in quality - we’ve made the commitment. Other dog food

and cat food companies try to take shortcuts by using vegetable

protein fillers and cheaper sources of fats.

VI. Continue Extensive Testing and Monitoring to Assure Optimal

Health and Longevity of Your Pet

Natura Pet Products will stay on the leading edge of pet health care. As

new information is developed, Natura will adjust formulas to ensure

that our diets stay the healthiest in the world!

Solid Gold

Founded in 1974, Solid Gold is one of the oldest pet food companies,

and one of the first to pioneer all natural, holistic dog foods. Solid

Gold sources all of its ingredients weekly and they all come from the

USA except lamb meal from New Zealand (an impeccable source) and

potato protein from Europe.

They always use USDA Choice meats, USDA grade I and II grains, and

healthful monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils. Their

manufacturing plant is in the US as well.

Solid Gold specializes in the development of "low allergen" products,

which work together to enhance total health, boost up the immune

system, and protect against disease.

Solid Gold was also an industry leader in the use of revolutionary foil

"barrier" packaging for all their dry food products, which means they

don't have to use chemical preservatives or flavor enhancers.

Their website is www.solidgoldhealth.com

53

They sell dry kibble as well as canned foods in several brands, all of

which I would recommend, based on your dog’s particular needs.

Flint River Ranch

Flint River is a small company founded in 1993 by Jim Flint. He only

uses human grade, high quality ingredients in his formulas. The kibble

is baked rather than extruded, so it is not subjected to the high heat

that can rob extruded kibbles of their vitamins and natural enzymes.

This twice baked formula makes the food easier to digest.

They source all their ingredients except lamb (from New Zealand) from

the US and their manufacturing plant is in California.

The only problem with them is they are not easily found. You can only

order their products from their independent distributors. The idea

behind this is that the foods do not sit in the warehouse or on the

retail shelves as long so they are fresher. Their site is www.frrco.com

Flint river foods have high digestibility and more usable energy so you

don’t have to feed as much as other foods. The oven baking makes

for great tasting food.

58

They don't make a canned food. Instead they carry the DryWater dog

food which contains freeze-dried vegetables and other special

ingredients and is mixed with warm water before serving to make a

softer, moist meal, similar to the consistency of canned food.

Flint River Ranch has several dry oven baked foods to choose from:

• Original – for puppies and adults

• Dry water – freeze dried

• Fish N Chips – for dogs with allergies

• Lamb, millet and rice – for dogs with allergies

• Nugget

• Senior

• Senior lite

Original Oven-Baked Puppy and Adult Dog Food Formula

This chicken, lamb, and rice formula is twice oven baked under

carefully controlled conditions and temperatures - resulting in better

59

nutrition, palatability and digestibility for your pet. It is suitable for

adults and puppies.

Oven-baking changes hard to digest starches into easy to digest

dextrins, which are readily absorbed into your dog's system. The

secret to Flint River Ranch's great nutrition is how many nutrients are

present in the dog's food and how efficiently they are utilized when

digested. The good value is baked-in, not sprayed on.

Feeding Guide for Flint River Ranch

Because the Kibble is high density, you feed 20%-25% less than other

foods. Each serving delivers maximum nutrition without fillers, so

you'll also notice a lower stool volume and less clean-up.

As with any new food, it's best to introduce Super Premium foods by

mixing with your dog's usual food and increasing the amount of Flint

River Ranch over several days. It will take time for your dog to adjust

to the rich, easy to digest, Super Premium quality. A sudden change in

any food source may be a shock to your dog's digestive system. You

may notice loose stool. If so, reduce the amount being fed until your

dog adjusts.

Feed your dog twice a day. Food requirements vary depending on

climate, breed of dog and exercise activity. Feed an amount that will

maintain your dog's weight.

Trout “Fish & Chips”

For dogs with allergies to meats and grains - no grains.

Flint River Ranch Trout and Sweet Potato - also know as Fish & Chips! -

is a tasty option for food-sensitive dogs: Fish & Chips dog food does

not contain corn, wheat, chicken, or rice. Twice oven baked.

62

The fish is farm-fresh Rainbow Trout, raised with special feeding

requirements without any hormones or feed additives. Natural flavors

are like a soup stock, made in the family’s kitchen at home. Whole fish

is boiled and reduced to gravy. Remaining solids are strained out and

the resulting rich, liquid gravy is part of the ingredient mix.

Often pets can benefit from an additional probiotic supplement that

provides a higher concentration and wider variety of beneficial

microorganisms.

This food is baked in the shape of nuggets that are the same size and

shape as our Nugget dog food: each piece is nearly cube-shaped,

about 1/2" square on one side and a little smaller on the other side.

The fish is frozen fresh and without additives, and it remains frozen

until the time of production. Mixed tocopherols are then introduced as

a natural preservative.

foods contain the highest quality organic ingredients with no chemical

additives, preservatives, coloring agents, dyes or by products. These

been clinically linked to food allergies in dogs.

Orijen

New on the pet food scene, this Canadian company owned by

Champion Foods shows great promise. They are advocates of the new

theory of grain-free formulas that they believe replicate the same rich

balance of meats, fruits, vegetables and grasses that dogs would

encounter in a wilderness setting. They call themselves biologically

appropriate real food kibble.

They make three formulas for the three life stages: puppy, adult, and

senior. All have no grains. They are 70% meat, fish, and chicken

mixed with 30% fruits and vegetables.

BARF Raw Diet

The first advocate of the raw diet for dogs, Dr. Billinghurst now sells a

line of frozen raw patties. You can also go to the official site Barfworld

to learn more about BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) and

purchase his book on how to prepare your own raw diets.

www.barfworld.com

The idea behind the BARF diet is that dogs in the wild would have

eaten primarily prey they had killed and would not have eaten the

grains that we see in most dog foods.

Cooked food, they claim, robs the food of enzymes. Grains in their

opinion cause degenerative diseases. The diet includes raw meat,

ground bones, vegetables and some fruits. You can purchase frozen

raw diets on their website.

Ingredients to Avoid

There are many other good brands available. Check with your local

specialized dog food store. Be careful if you hear any hype. And be

sure to avoid the following:

NO Poultry by-products - Ground, rendered, cleaned slaughtered

poultry carcass parts such as necks, feet, lymph nodes, undeveloped

eggs and intestines (and a small amount of feathers). The quality is

very inconsistent between batches. Note: By product meals are often

derived from 4-D meat sources - defined as food animals that have

been rejected for human consumption because they were presented to

the meat packing plant as "Dead, Dying, Disabled or Diseased".

NO Chemical fertilizers - Chemical fertilizers have been incriminated in

serious health problems in animals and are not allowed in organic-

certified products.

NO Antibiotics or steroids - Long-term daily administration may result

in a compromised immune system, muscle wasting, and destruction of

the friendly bacteria living in the intestines that aid the digestion of

food and assimilation of nutrients.

NO Chemical additives or artificial preservatives - Chemical

antioxidants, such as ethoxyquin, BHT or BHA, that were designed to

69

extend the shelf life and reduce fat spoilage (rancidity) of pet foods

may cause allergic reactions and affect liver and kidney functions.

NO Wheat or corn - Wheat and corn may cause allergies in some dogs

and cats.

NO Artificial flavors - Flavor enhancers are produced by the enzymatic

liquefaction or hydrolysis of animal tissue. Those made with phosphoric

acid are particularly appealing to cats because they produce a

"tingling" sensation on the tongue.

NO Artificial Colors and Dyes - Coloring agents provide an artificial

"rich and meaty" look to modify the appearance of highly processed

foods and make them more appealing to pet owners.

Final Words

I have made every attempt to provide you with the most up to date information on dog diets and how to keep your dog healthy with proper nutrition.

There is some controversy these days about whether or not to feed raw or grain free. And I’m sure there will be more opinions offered in the future.

I believe the most important thing is to keep in mind that all dogs are individuals. Some may thrive on a diet that includes grains, others may not. Some dogs have allergies to chicken, probably because of the over vaccination problem. Some can’t tolerate fish.

It’s a individual matter and you know your dog best, so pay attention to changes in him or her when you switch diets.

Once again I’d like to remind you of that old adage: “Variety is the spice of life”. Rotate foods and recipes to ensure a healthy balanced diet for your dog.

And remember the very important and necessary ingredient for the well being of your dog. LOVE. It’s what we all thrive on.

Best of luck with your dog and if you have any questions or comments I’d love to hear from you. Just email me at [email protected]
