When the transparent outer coating on the front of the eye (the cornea) is scraped, scratched, or torn, it is likely to be a very painful experience.
The cornea contains more nerve endings than just about any other part of the body. In cases of superfi cial abrasions, the cornea is likely to heal completely in one to two days, and permanent vision loss is unlikely to occur. However, it may take weeks for clear vision to return completely. In more severe cases, an eye patch should be worn to promote healing. It is important that any case of corneal abrasion be examined and treated by the ophthalmologist, who can make a diagnosis and provide the most suitable treatment.P.S. If a corneal abrasion is not properly treated and an infection arises that leads to an ulcer, it is quite a serious matter.

Dr. Diego Illanes, a three year fellowship-trained urogynecologist and pelvic reconstructive surgeon, joined Womenʼs Health in July. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (bulges), urinary and fecal incontinence and other bladder problems such as urinary urgency, frequency and diffi culty emptying. Dr. Illanes will be working in our Worcester, Marlborough, and Webster offi ces. Dr. Illanes is a wonderful addition to our WHCMA team.
