Frequently asked questions about the future of Sage

BusinessWorks Accounting and Sage BusinessVision

Accounting

At Sage Summit 2012, Sage announced in the keynote speech that some of our more mature

products are slated for reduced investment. These products include Sage BusinessWorks

Accounting and Sage BusinessVision Accounting. This document answers some of the

questions that we have heard from our customers and partners over the past few months.

What does “reduced investment” mean?

We will continue to invest in and support Sage BusinessWorks and Sage BusinessVision for

the near future. Both products had a full release in calendar year 2013, which will be followed

by product and tax updates throughout the year.

However, as we realign our internal resources, future investment and development in Sage 50

Accounting, Sage 100 ERP, Sage 300 ERP, and Sage ERP X3 may outpace the investments

that will be made into Sage BusinessWorks and Sage BusinessVision.

Why are Sage BusinessWorks and Sage BusinessVision slated for

reduced investment?

Our customers are increasingly asking for new technologies to help them accelerate their

business growth. In response, Sage is making investments in products such as mobile and

the data cloud. The technology in Sage 50 Accounting, Sage 100 ERP, Sage 300 ERP, and

Sage ERP X3 is better suited to support these services than the technology in some of our

other products.

What is the difference between “sunset” and “end-of-life”?

For end-of-life (EOL) products, such as Sage Pro ERP and Sage PFW ERP, a retirement

date has been announced, and support and updates will end at a certain (known) date. New

license sales have ceased; renewals are only available up to the retirement date.

For sunset products, the retirement decision has not been made, and the products remain

active in support and development. In most cases, we still sell new licenses for the product,

and we maintain an active maintenance and support program. It is “business as usual,” but

with reduced future investment in the support and development of these products.

Page 4: Reasons to Migrate from Sage BusinessVision to a New Sage ...22pages).pdf · Top Ten Reasons to Migrate from Sage BusinessVision to a New Sage ERP solution 1. Apply proven best practices

2

What Sage Business Care deliverables can I expect?

Sage will continue to provide product and tax updates for Sage BusinessWorks and Sage

BusinessVision, but we will move from annual release cycles to a more agile approach where

we release product updates and enhancements throughout the year. The advantage for our

customers is that they no longer have to wait for annual releases to receive all product and tax

updates; these updates will be delivered as soon as they are ready.

How long are you going to offer support for Sage BusinessWorks and

Sage BusinessVision?

At this time, we are not ending the product life of Sage BusinessWorks or Sage BusinessVision.

Therefore any discussions about end of support are premature. However, our customers and

partners can be assured that Sage will give ample notice if retirement for any products is to be

announced, to facilitate a smooth transition to one of the more modern Sage accounting or ERP

solutions.

Should I stay active on my Sage Business Care plan?

Sage BusinessWorks and Sage BusinessVision are viable products that will serve our

customers for many years to come. Staying active on your Sage Business plan provides a

variety of benefits:

Insurance against

critical failures

Staying on plan will ensure the stability of your Sage BusinessWorks

and Sage BusinessVision system, as you always have the latest

updates and fixes.

Tax updates On-plan customers using payroll will continue to receive tax updates.

Cost savings through

the SIPP trade-in

program

On-plan customers are eligible for the migration offers provided through

the SIPP, which can save them thousands of dollars on Sage solutions

and third party products.

Credit toward Sage

Business Care plans on

destination product

For on-plan customers trading in their licenses, the monetary value of

the remaining Sage BusinessWorks or Sage BusinessVision business

care contract will be credited towards the cost of the destination

product’s Sage Business Care contract.

Dual support while

implementing the new

Sage ERP

On-plan customers trading in their licenses will receive continued

support on Sage BusinessWorks or Sage BusinessVision for another

six months at no additional cost. This means the customer has dual

support for six months, making the transition even smoother.

Page 5: Reasons to Migrate from Sage BusinessVision to a New Sage ...22pages).pdf · Top Ten Reasons to Migrate from Sage BusinessVision to a New Sage ERP solution 1. Apply proven best practices

3

What happens when Sage BusinessWorks or Sage BusinessVision no

longer meets the needs of my business?

For customers and partners not familiar with Sage accounting and ERP solutions, we

recommend attending one of our bi-weekly “Meet the family of Sage ERP solutions” webinars,

which provide an overview of our ERP and accounting solutions. Register here

Also, please reach out to your account manager, who is able to assist you in finding a solution

that will better meet your needs.

What do I need to do right now?

Sage is fully committed to support Sage BusinessWorks and Sage BusinessVision for the near

future, and we will continue to provide our on-plan customers with product and tax updates.

There is no need for customers to take any immediate action. However, the reduced investment

in the sunset products will increasingly lead to significant functional advantages of our core

products: Sage One, Sage 50 Accounting, Sage 100 ERP, Sage 300 ERP, and Sage ERP X3.

Asset Management is a powerful and complete asset management solution with Sage 300 ERP. The core module, Asset Accounting, can be used to process the entire asset accounting transactions, including acquisition, depreciation, adjustment, disposal, merge and split. The higher functionality module, Asset Maintenance and Asset Leasing can be used to facilitate the asset maintenance and lease management.

Info Explorer – with right-back for budgeting and forecasting

Info-Explorer from Orchid Systems is a powerful, intuitive analysis tool that allows you to explore your Sage 300 ERP data and other data, providing insight to help you increase the performance of your business. With data input too, you can budget and forecast in the same tool.

Report Manager

Report Manager provides a central point from which you can manage and run custom Crystal Reports from any Sage 300 ERP program. Do away with ugly and often difficult to use “parameters” and introduce professional looking user interfaces that can be customized to suit.

Sage ERP – Named vs Concurrent

Named users (Sage 300 Online) vs Concurrent (Sage 300 ERP on-premise or hosted), what's the difference? Think of a named user license as "owned" by and used exclusively by the named

user assigned to it. Even if that user is not logged in at the time, their assigned

named license is not available to be used by others users. The up-side to this type

of license is that the named user will always be able to log into the software

regardless of how many other users may be logged in since their license is held in

reserve just for them.

A concurrent license or group of concurrent licenses is a “pool” of licenses that can

be used by an unlimited number of users who are assigned to use the pool. When

a user assigned to the concurrent license pool tries to log in, Sage ERP checks to

see if there is a concurrent license available and if so, they successfully log in. If

all of the concurrent licenses in the pool are in use by other logged in users, the

user attempting to log in gets an error message stating that there are no concurrent

licenses in the pool available at this time and to try again later.

The up-side to concurrent licenses is that they are shared and therefore less costly

to buy licenses for users who work on shifts or are just casual users who don’t

need to stay logged in for long periods of time or their need to log in is not time

sensitive or urgent. The down-side is that a user who needs to log in may not be

able to in the case where the number of concurrent licenses in the pool is equal to

the number of users currently logged in.

Another way to think of a named user license is like having a reserved parking

space in the parking lot. The named user always has his designated space

available whether their car is currently on the lot or not. The rest of the parking

spots are like a concurrent user license where first come first served and if a

shared spot is open when you arrive, you can park there and if no spaces are

open, you get to drive around until someone leaves the lot.

Version 2014, Sage 300 ERP users are able to see who is logged in, if they

need to approach a user to exit
