New Christians
We are so proud of Nolan Couch and his recent decision to put on Christ in bap-
tism. We are happy for Nolan and his family and we are so happy Nolan has been
raised to understand truth and have a desire to obey it. If you haven’t already done it,
give this young man a pat on the back for the decision he’s made to serve the Lord!
We also want to congratulate Richard Sinard and Leslie Woodrow on their decision
to be baptized this past Thursday morning. They are excited about being Christians
like the Bible says. Please welcome them to our church family.
Real Life
This weekend we are learning some great principles for dealing with life in the 21st
century. We live during confusing times and it’s not always easy to know what to do.
The encouraging thing for us is that we know that no matter how fast the world
changes God doesn’t change and his will for us doesn’t change. We appreciate Bret
Carter and his desire to communicate God’s will to our generation.
Fellowship and Afternoon Worship!
Everyone is welcome to enjoy a great meal today after the morning worship. We
know we’ll have plenty of wonderful food. Afterwards, we’ll gather for an afternoon
service at 1:00 to complete our weekend of special lessons. We hope everyone will
stay and participate and enjoy!
Retreats
Both the women and men of Roebuck Parkway have upcoming retreats. The con-
cept of a “retreat” has always fascinated me. To retreat sounds like you are giving up
or turning back, but the idea conveys the need for us to leave some things behind for a
day or two and refocus on what is truly important. So, to retreat really means we re-
turn to our right way of thinking in a world that shifts our attention away form the
spiritual on to the worldly.

The Secret of Contentment “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content” (Phil. 4:11). These words were spoken by Paul while he was in prison and fac-ing death. Such words seem strange for one in the confines of a Roman prison. It is easy for one who is wealthy and free to tell the downtrodden how to be content when it seems they have everything one could ever want. But here we have a man in poverty, pain and prison stating that he has learned to be content regardless of his situation in life. The word “content” is from the Greek word autarkies means “self-sufficient, adequate, needing no assistance” (Vine, p. 234). Paul had learned to be content not by relying upon himself but by relying upon God. Just two verses later he said, “I can do all things through Christ who strength-ens me” (Phil. 4:13). Paul was a man who had many friends as the letter to the Philippians shows for Paul was writing to acknowl-edge their kindness to him in sending to meet his needs time and time again. As someone has said, “Friendships multiply joys and divide griefs.” If one truly wants to be con-tented then let him make and keep many friends. The wise man Solomon said, “A man who has friends must him-self be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). A friend is one who is willing to sacrifice his life for you. Paul had such friends. For example we read in Romans 16:3, 4 – “Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4 who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.” How-ever, the greatest friend that Paul had and the greatest friend that any of us could have is the One who did lay down His life for us – Jesus Christ (cf. John 15:13; John 10:17, 18). Contentment for Paul came also because he enter-tained many noble thoughts. The old adage about com-puters, “Trash in, trash out”, is also true of our physical, mental and spiritual lives. Feed your body trash and your body will deteriorate. Feed your mind on impure thoughts and you will deteriorate mentally and spiritually. David found contentment in times of affliction by remembering God’s word. In Psalms 119:49, 50 he wrote, “Remember the word to Your servant, Upon which You have caused me to hope. 50 This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life.” Again, in verse 92 of that same chapter, David reiterated that truth saying, “Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished in my affliction.” This great apostle likewise found content-ment in what he fed his mind. “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things” (Phil. 4:8).
