Film made in 1961. A plastic surgeon wanted by the

police after an operation goes hideously wrong.

However, believing himself to have brilliant abilities as

a surgeon, he and his assistants evade capture

and escape to the Continent. There he

befriends a circus owner on whose deformed daughter

Nicole he operates. He manipulates his way into running the circus, taking it over when the owner dies in a "freak accident." A decade

later, he is running an internationally successful circus, which he uses as a

front for his surgical exploits. He befriends deformed women and

transforms them for his "Temple of Beauty". However, when they

threaten to leave, they meet with mysterious

accidents.

Directed by Sidney Hayers

An art film (also known as art movie, specialty film, art house film, or in the collective sense as art cinema) is the result of filmmaking which is typically an independent film aimed at a niche market rather

than a mass market audience. An art film is "intended to be a serious artistic work, often experimental and

not designed for mass appeal"; they are "made primarily for aesthetic reasons rather than commercial

profit"  and they contain "unconventional or highly symbolic content."

What Have You Learned From

Audience Feedback?

Page 20: Real a2 media studies evaluation

V O X  P O P  Q U E S T I O N S        What is your favorite horror film and why?

What is your worst fear?        What do you like about horror films?

What do you dislike about horror films?        What would you like/expect to see in a horror?

What’s your favorite horror film character?        What trailer have you seen recently that you thought was

particularly effective? (Any genre)        How do you feel about clowns?

What is the most terrifying film you have ever seen and why was it so terrifying?

What props do you think of when told a film’s genre is ‘horror’?

What kind of story line do you look for/enjoy in a horror film?

•I learned that the audience were very hard to please.

•Some of them didn’t watch or like any horror films.

•The older audience proffered classic old horror films.

•They were very into the classic conventions of horror films.

•Most weren't scared of clowns.

Page 22: Real a2 media studies evaluation

Media Students FeedbackI received a different perspective as the audience

was a younger generation and knew more about media conventions and codes.

FEEDBACK ON ROUGH CUT OF CIRQUE

1.Our peers thought that our establishing shots were too light and un-threatening so they suggested that we grade the images so that they are darker and build on the

idea that the trailer is for a horror.

Page 23: Real a2 media studies evaluation

2.They said they thought the clown (the killer) is introduced to early on in the trailer and they think it would be better if he was introduced near

the end to create shock, but our best visual shots had the clown in and we really like using the spinning tunnel at the beginning as we find it quite

chilling so we discussed it and because of the abstract art house aspects we wanted we decided to keep that shot at the beginning.

Page 24: Real a2 media studies evaluation

3.They said that they liked how the fast shots were edited but they think

that we should use more of a variation between slow and fast. Perhaps a slow cut of the hands round the door in slow

motion and then a quick shot of the clowns head close up, this would

create building tension then shock.

Page 25: Real a2 media studies evaluation

4.They liked the titles that had been used but they thought we

should explain more of the story with them, maybe use

reviews as titles or a newspaper cutting with

something like “mysterious deaths at local circus”
