The Tour de France
The Tour de France is the most well-known cycling race in the world today. It is a 20-stage
road race that lasts for 22 days with two days for riders to rest. The entire race is more than
3,000 kilometers long.
Usually the race follows a circuit around France and sometimes some countries near France,
such as Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland
and the United Kingdom.
Each of the 20 stages is a race. The winner is determined by calculating the total time the
rider has spent to complete each stage of the race. The Tour de France is one of three major
cycling races in Europe. The other two races are the Tour of Italy and the Tour of Spain,
which are less well known outside Europe.
Riders join the race as a team. There are around 20 to 22 competing teams in each race and
each team has nine riders. Each team of the Tour de France is supported by and named after
its sponsorsthe people or companies that provide money to these teams. The team members
support each other to complete the race.
