Reading 3 Tuesday, 10 November, 1942- Sunday 13 June, 1942 1 Slide 2 Tuesday, November 10, 1942 Anne discusses how Mr. Dussel, a Jewish dentist, will be joining them in hiding. Real name: Fritz Pfeffer Fritz was originally from Germany, but moved to Amsterdam to escape the Nuremburg laws, which prohibited him from marrying his girlfriend, Charlotta Kaletta, who was Catholic. Fritz was Miep's dentist and when it became clear that it was no longer safe in Nazi-occupied Holland, he asked her if she knew of a safe hiding place Charlotta never knew where Fritz was hiding, but they were able to exchange letters through Miep. Slide 3 Tuesday, 17 November, 1942 Mr. Dussel arrives at the Annexe. Explain how Mr. Dussel is tricked into coming to the Annexe? (50) Dussel cannot believe the Franks are there; he believed the rumor about them escaping to Belgium. The inhabitants have written a Guide to the Secret Annexe that humorously tells Dussel what to expect while in hiding. Slide 4 Thursday, 19 November, 1942 Dussel and Anne will share a bedroom. Anne feels that Dussel is very slow on the uptake (53) Dussel tells the group about how conditions in the outside word (53-54) Describes how the SS are going door to door to locate Jews and send them to camps The SS men sometimes are able to be bribed Anne is able to sometimes see the groups walking by She feels extremely guilty for being in hiding while so many others, including her friends, are in Nazi camps. Slide 5 Friday, 20 November, 1942 The annexe has begun to feel gloomy from Dussels stories about what is happening to friends and family not in hiding. Miep wouldnt tell them anything because she doesnt want to hurt them. Anne begins to feel miserable and lonely (55) Slide 6 28 November, 1942 The annexe has used too much power and is in danger of having their electricity cut off for two weeks. Gas & Electricity had been rationed since 1941. If a home used too much of either, they would lose their service. Annes new hobby is to use binoculars to peer into the windows of other houses, so she can be reminded of what normal people do. Anne does not enjoy living with Dussel she feels he is too strict He tattles on her behavior to Mrs. Frank or Mrs. Van Daan. Slide 8 Thursday, 10 December, 1942 The group buys a case of meat to preserve as sausages, with the help of Mr. Van Daan Dussel begins to attend to the groups teeth. Mrs. Van Daans teeth are very bad As Dussel is examining her, the scraper gets stuck in her tooth. Slide 9 Tuesday, 22 December, 1942 The government is giving everyone an extra lb of butter for the Christmas holiday. Since the group has purchased 4 illegal ration books, each of the 8 people will get lb. Anne and Dussel continue to have a strained relationship. Dussel shushes her constantly, even during the night. He wakes Anne up early so he can exercise and get dressed. Slide 10 Wednesday, 13 January, 1943 The roundups of Jews continue on. Children return home from school to find their parents gone. Women return from shopping to find their families have been taken. The young Dutch Gentile (non-Jewish) men are being taken to fight in the Nazi army. Anne feels guilty for having a safe hiding place. She describes how children do not have warm clothes, food, and heat. They beg for food on the street. I could go on for hours about all the suffering the war has brought, but then I would only make myself more dejected. There is nothing we can do but wait as calmly as we can til the misery comes to an end. Jews and Christians wait, the whole earth waits; and there are many who wait for death (64). Slide 11 Anne describes hearing the Allied bombers fly over the Netherlands on their way from England to targets in Germany Allies bombed docks, factories, and transportation centers in the Netherlands Germans defended vulnerable targets with A.A. (antiaircraft) guns Slide 12 27 February 1943 Henk brings the group a letter from the Dutch bishops. On Sunday, February 21, 1943, Dutch bishops issued a letter to their followers, which was read in all Catholic churches in the Netherlands (and some Protestant churches as well) Protested the rounding up of young people & the persecution of the Jews. The building has been bought by a new owner, who wanted to look at the building. Mr. Koophuis tells the owner he forgot the key. Slide 13 Wednesday, 10 March, 1943 The AA guns scare Anne, so she sleeps in her parents bed with them. Mrs. Frank sticks up for Anne, and lights a candle so it is not as dark and frightening. Mrs. Van Daan is convinced there are burglars in the attic. Turns out to be a swarm of large rats Peter is bit by one as he climbs down the ladder Peters cat, Mouschi, is put into the attic to take care of the rats. Slide 14 Friday, 12 March, 1943 Food becomes a problem. Anne is sick of beans No bread Cigarette shortage Anne is reading The Knock at the Door by Ina Boudier-Bakker The story of the family is exceptionally well-written. Apart from that, it is about war, writers, the emancipation of women; and quite honestly Im not awfully interested (70). Anne is growing so fast her shoes do not fit her. Slide 15 Friday, 19 March, 1943 Anne describes the propaganda on the radio called Fhrer aller German which talks to wounded soldiers: The wounded seemed to be proud of their wounds the more the better. One of them felt so moved at being able to shake hands with the Fhrer (that is, if he still had a hand!) that he could hardly get the words out of his mouth (72). Slide 16 Thursday, 25 March, 1943 Peter alerts the group that there may be burglars in the warehouse. Otto, Peter, & Mr. Van Daan go to investigate. The wireless was tuned to the British channel and there were chairs around the radio to listen. Would clue the police into the others in the Annexe. There is no one in the warehouse. Slide 17 Saturday, March 27, 1943 Anne has become interested in studying Greek & Roman mythology Hanns Rauter: head of the German SS (Nazi militia) and police in the Netherlands. All Jews must be out of the German-occupied countries before July 1. Between April 1 and May 1 the province of Utrecht must be cleaned out [as if Jews were cockroaches]. Between May 1 and June 1 the provinces of North and South Holland (75) Euphemism: the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt What euphemism does Rauter use? Slide 18 Thursday, 1 April, 1943 Most of the Annexe helpers are sick Mr. Koophuis has stomach issues, and needs to stay in bed for three weeks Elli has the flu Mr. Vossen has a stomach ulcer and needs to be hospitalized. Otto is worried about an important business meeting that Mr. Koophuis was supposed to lead for him. - Mr. Kraler is going to be in the meeting instead, but doesnt have full knowledge of the issues. Otto, Margot, and Anne press their ears to the floor to try to hear the meeting in the office below Johannes Kleiman akaMr. Koophuis Slide 19 Friday, 2 April, 1943 Otto cannot come to say Annes goodnight prayers with her so Edith offers to help. When Anne refuses, Edith begins to tear up and says I dont want to be cross, love cannot be forced (77). What do you think this means? How do you think Edith is feeling at this moment? Anne blames her mother for her cold feelings Slide 20 Tuesday, 27 April, 1943 The housemates are quarrelling Mr. Vossen is still in the hospital. Mr. Koophuis is not longer on bed rest. Anne discussed how the air raids are getting heavier on German towns and the AA guns keep her awake. The food is meager and miserable Slide 21 Willem Sandberg: a Dutch artist and designer Sandberg, along with the help of a printer, Frans Duwaer, produced fake papers to help people avoid arrest. Sandberg was such a talented designer that even experts could not identify the fakes. They could only be verified through the Civil Registry Office Along with four others, he attempted to burn down the Central Civil Registry Office in Amsterdam on March 27, 1943. Sandberg escaped arrested; the other four arsonists were shot by the Gestapo. Slide 22 Saturday, 1 May, 1943 Anne remarks on the lack of manners they now have in the annexe. They have used the same tablecloth. The Van Daans have slept on the same sheet all winter Ottos tie and trousers are frayed Ediths corsets have split; Margots bras are too small for her. Annes clothes are too small for her too because she is growing. Anne is so afraid of the air raids that she has packed a suitcase to leave Where will you escape to? - Edith Slide 23 Tuesday, 18 May, 1943 Anne witnesses an air battle between German and British planes They must burn their garbage instead of throwing it away so that no one is alerted to their presence. The Nazis have made students sign a loyalty oath that they are in favor of the New Order. Required if they want to graduate or continue their studies. 80% have refused to sign. They are being sent to a labor camp in Germany. Slide 24 Sunday, 13 June, 1943 Annes birthday arrives. Otto writes her a poem about how Anne needs to take the advice of adults in order to keep the peace. She is also given sweets and a book on mythology.
