Grade: Kindergarten

Subject/Topic/Activity: For Valentine’s Day, Writing Class

Standards:CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.5 With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.6 With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

Objective: Students will be able to illustrate his or her favorite activity and explain with a simple sentence their reason why it is his or her favorite activity.

Materials: Different Construction paper cut out hearts, writing notebook, and pencils

Procedure:

Introduction: I will prepare them and say: I am going to ring the bell and then I want all of you to bring your pencils and your writing notebook. (This activity will be done early February.) I will begin by stating that Valentine’s Day is approaching and we need decorations to put up in the classroom. I will explain the assignment. We will illustrate one of his or her favorite activity and write a sentence that explains why he or she loves the activity so much. (I would have one complete-On a heart shape paper I will draw myself in the movie theatre. It will have a sentence underneath it. I love going to the movies because some movies make me laugh.)

Body: (Transition) “In order for us to think about our favorite activity lets brainstorm some ideas. Brainstorming is putting your ideas on paper. Take out your notebooks and draw a heart. (I will draw one on the chalkboard)” I will ask them to draw all the activities they enjoy and love to do. I will give them around 10-15 minutes to draw their activities within the heart.

Closing: I will ring the bell to get their attention. Once I have gotten their attention I will ask them to think and pick one of your favorite activities to draw and write about. “Before you draw on the construction paper, all of you need to write a sentence explaining why you love the activity in your writing activity, in your notebooks and come to me when you are done.” I will tell them what I will be looking for, Capitalization, periods at the end of the sentence, spaces in between words, and if the sentence explains the activity. Once I approve them, they will be given a cut out shaped heart and they will illustrate their favorite activity and write a simple sentence explaining why they love the activity. Once every one has finished the assignment, they will be hung around the classroom.

Assessment: They will be given a cut out heart. On the heart they will be asked to illustrate his or her activity and provide a simple sentence explaining why they love the activity they chose. This assignment is a fun activity that will allow them to practice his or her writing. The assignment will also give them an opportunity to explain themselves in a creative way. This activity will help me address the problems students may encounter and things to look for and work on before they move on to writing paragraphs. Problems such as capitalization, will explain to the student that capitalization always happens when you start a sentence and when you write the names of people, places or things. A possible activity would be to have a list of nouns and pronouns and together as a class go down the list and circle the ones that need to be capitalized and give the reason. If a student has a problem with spacing, I will explain to them that words have a beginning and an end and for a reader to be able to read the sentence, the space tells the words a part. To get them used to putting spaces, I will teach them a technique and that is to put their finger in between the words, use their finger as a space and use it until they have mastered that skill.

Management Issues, Transitions, and Differentiation:I will use the bell to gain the students attention. If at any time the students get to loud, I will quietly stand back and simply say, “I will wait until the class is quiet to continue.”Transitions: I would use the bell to get students to gather on the rug and tell them what is expected.Within one activity to another, students will be shown the final product and in order for them to get to that final product they must brainstorm and that is transitioning from one activity to the next. Differentiation: There is not much differentiation going on. Some students may have trouble starting sentences so they will be given a worksheet saying, “I love to put favorite activity here because….” They are to glue this worksheet in their writing notebooks.

Self Reflection and Evaluation of Lesson:
