The Hartness House History

The Hartness House is one of the most unique country inns in the United States. Its reputation as a historical place is, in fact, world-wide. The Hartness House is listed as a National Register of Historic Places and is a State of Vermont landmark. This is due to the genius of James Hartness – governor of

Vermont, industrialist, inventor, astronomer and writer.

Springfield Vermont lies between the Green Mountains and the Connecticut River in southeastern Vermont. Beautifully hilly with crystal clear streams, rivers and forests and dotted with farms and church steeples and

covered bridges, Springfield epitomizes the essence of the idyllic Vermont countryside. At the turn of the century the various waterfalls of the Black River – situated in the middle of town - were providing energy from over ten power generating plants. The industry that grew in Springfield manufactured machine tools and the area became known as Precision Valley. That Springfield became an industrial center is credited largely to

the genius and daring of James Hartness.

In 1888, Jones and Lamson, a company which had produced everything from wrenches to rifles was moved from Windsor to Springfield. Hartness joined the company shortly thereafter. Two years later, Hartness

invented one of the most important machine tools ever made – the flat turret lathe.

Hartness never stopped producing new ideas. From 1886 to 1933 he patented over 120 different machines. They ranged from the flat turret lathe and optical comparator to a safety razor and a telescope.

Following his success as an inventor and CEO of James and Lamson, in 1903 Hartness begins the

construction of his home now known as Hartness House. The Hartness House is beautifully mahogany wood paneled, with a great fireplace in the Library, and a sweeping three-story staircase. All the rooms in the

mansion are restored and offer all the modern conveniences. The House offers three large rooms that are used to host functions. The House is surrounded by 35 acres of landscaped lawns, babbling brooks, nature walks,

- 5 -

stone bridges, and hillside meadows. The Hartness mansion is recognized with three National Register of Historic Places awards.

Hartness’ avocations were interesting and illuminating. His business career followed the lines of other

successful executives. In 1910, Hartness constructed his personal astronomical observatory and underground study and workplace. In 1914, Hartness purchased a Wright Flyer biplane, became one of the first 100

licensed pilots in the U.S., and built Hartness Airport, one of Vermont’s modern airports.

In 1921, James Hartness was elected governor of Vermont. As governor, he expanded Vermont’s highways and transportation systems, and championed women’s rights. In 1927, he welcomed his good friend Charles

Lindbergh to Vermont following Lindbergh’s historic Trans-Atlantic flight.

In recent times, the Hartness House has been expanded from its original 11 rooms in the mansion to 40 rooms. Particularly noteworthy, the Hartness House has its own museum dedicated to amateur astronomy

and telescope-making. There is an antique astronomical observatory that is connected to the museum. Hotel guests are invited to privately tour the museum during their stay at the Hartness House.

“Into this house there came and went an unbroken stream of friend, and all found here hospitality, simplicity,

singular kindness, and pleasant unforgettable memories.”

From the biography of James Hartness, written by Joseph Wickham Roe

APPENDIX 4 – GETTING MARRIED IN SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT

Getting Married in Springfield, Vermont

These are some simple answers to most marriage and wedding license questions.

Do we need a marriage license? Do we need blood tests?

You will need a license, but you do not need blood tests, and there is no waiting period.

Where do we get a marriage license? Licenses are issued by the Town Clerk. (For Vermont residents, the

license must be purchased in the Town where the bride or groom lives.) What if we are not Vermont Residents? If neither party is a Vermont

resident, you may get the license from any town clerk in the State.

Where is the Springfield Town Clerk's Office Located?

The Springfield Town Clerk's office is located at 96 Main Street, on the second floor. The office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday

through Friday. The telephone number is 802-885-2104.

How much does it cost? The license costs $45.00 and is valid for 60 days from the date it is

issued. The marriage license may be used the day it is issued. During the 60-day time period, an authorized person must perform your wedding

ceremony - otherwise, the license is void.

What information must we provide to get a marriage license?

Besides basic information about yourselves (names, towns of residence, places, and dates of birth), you must also provide your parents' names,

including your mothers' maiden names, and their places of birth. (A certified copy of your birth certificate can supply most of this information.

However, it is not necessary for you to have a copy with you when you apply.) At least one party must sign the license in the presence of the

Town Clerk, certifying that all the information you provided is correct. If it is not a first marriage, and either marriage ended in death or divorce, the Town Clerk will ask to see a certified copy of the death certificate or

divorce decree.

Can a license be issued through the mail?

Can we be married by proxy? No. A marriage license cannot be issued through the mail, and you cannot be married by proxy.

- 40 -

Where can we get married? With a valid Vermont license, you can be married anywhere in Vermont, but only in Vermont.

Who can marry us? Do we need witnesses? A supreme court justice, a superior court

judge, a district judge, a judge of probate, an assistant judge, a justice of the peace or an ordained or licensed member of the clergy residing

in Vermont can perform you wedding ceremony. A clergy person residing in an adjoining state or country can marry you if his or her

church, temple, mosque, or other religious organization lies wholly or partly in Vermont. A clergy member residing in some other state or

in Canada can marry you if he or she first obtains a special authorization from the probate court in the district where the

marriage will take place. Vermont law does not require witnesses; but, if you are planning a religious ceremony, check to see if the

religion's tenets require witnesses.

What do we do with the license? What happens to it after the ceremony? By law, you must deliver the

license to the person who will conduct your wedding ceremony before the marriage can be performed. After the ceremony, the person who

performs the ceremony (officiant) will complete the sections concerning the date, place and officiant information, and sign your license. At that point, the license becomes a marriage certificate. The officiant

must return the certificate to the town clerk's office where it was issued within 10 days after the wedding so that your marriage can be

officially registered. The certificate is not a complete legal document until it has been recorded in the town clerk's office where it was

obtained.

How do we get a copy of our marriage certificate?

When you buy your license, you can arrange with the town clerk to mail you a certified copy of your certificate as soon as your marriage is recorded. The cost is $55.00 ($45.00 for the license and $10.00 for

the certified copy).

Always check with the Vermont Town Clerk for the latest information.

Addendum 1 - Banquet Liquor Policy The Hartness House Inn is a Vermont State Liquor Authority-regulated licensee. As a licensee we are obligated to observe and enforce all the State liquor regulations. It is our paramount interest to ensure the success of your event and we want to make you aware of our license requirements and house rules related to on-site liquor consummation. As all states’ liquor regulations vary, we kindly ask that you adhere to the points below. All alcohol consumed on these premises must be under the supervision and control

of the Hartness House. Private liquor possession and consummation in the dining rooms, reception halls, common areas, surrounding grounds, and parking lot is prohibited. Anyone violating this will be asked to leave the premises.

The Hartness House will request photo identification from anyone appearing to be 30 years or under prior to serving them alcoholic beverages. No alcohol will be served to anyone not able to prove with satisfactory ID that they are over the prevailing legal drinking age.

The Hartness House will not serve more than two drinks to any one patron at one time.

The Hartness House will refuse to serve alcoholic beverages to any patron that in its sole opinion appears to be intoxicated.

The Hartness House will not serve liquor shots during weddings and banquets. Certain high-alcohol content drinks may be portion-size restricted during banquets.

The Hartness House bar will announce “last call” 45 minutes prior to the event’s initial closing time, and stop selling alcoholic beverages 30 minutes to closing time. Feel free to request an extended event closing time – although the bar will not extend the time that is open.

The Hartness House recommends that you arrange with your guests appointing “designated drivers”. Once the designated drivers are identified to us, they will be eligible for free non-alcoholic beverages from the bar for the duration of the event.

Our overall interest is ensuring the success of your event, the safety of all of your guests, and a pleasant environment for all. We kindly request that you indicate your understanding and acceptance of the foregoing Hartness House liquor consummation conditions.
