Pastor Jeff has received word that long-time Trinity member Genevieve Barnes died on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. Because of COVID-19 the family has decided that there won't be a memorial service. Genny will be inurned next to her husband at Tahoma National Cemetery at a later date.
We have also received word that long-time Trinity member Lillian Buchanan died on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. A private service will be held the New Tacoma Cemetery later this week.
Trinity’s Worship
This Sunday, October 4 at 11:00 am, will be our final outdoor worship in the Wheeler Street Courtyard (weather permitting). You may worship either in person if you are so inclined and are willing to comply with COVID19 social distancing guidelines, or online via YouTube. This service will be live-streamed rather than pre-recorded as are most of our services during the pandemic. As this Sunday is also celebrated as the day to honor St. Francis of Assisi, we will incorporate a blessing of the animals into our worship. Plan to attend and to bring your family’s furry/feathered friends!
Maren Johnson has donated a statuette of St. Francis that will be displayed at the service.

Prayers For the World
The Trinity Lutheran/Pacific Lutheran University-sponsored PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD Friday morning devotionals have resumed at its usual time of 10:30 am. Instead of being held at the PLU campus, the gatherings are held via Zoom. To access the Friday prayers for the world, interested people should email Pastor Jonette for the link: [email protected]. This week we will be honoring civil rights leader Mahatma Gandhi in remembrance of his birthday.
Quilting will resume on Monday, October 5, at 9 a.m. in Thompson Hall, ending at 11:30. We will limit participants to 6 as per COVID19 guidelines. To ensure that, Joanne Schwartz will be calling/emailing members for each Monday. Questions? Call Joanne at 253-383-3321.
Safe Return to Worship Task Force Update
It has been 6 ½ months since the U.S. declared the COVID-19 outbreak a national emergency, and Trinity’s “Safe Return to Worship” task force continues to meet, reviewing changes to Governor Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” orders (especially those that pertain to churches) and closely monitoring Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department COVID-19 case numbers and statistics (www.tpchd.org), looking for changes that would indicate we may soon be able to safely gather indoors for worship.
The task force agreed early on to adhere to Governor Inslee’s 4 phased Safe Start Washington Plan (www.doh.wa.gov). In Phase 1 we stopped all but essential ministries (childcare and food panty) and began producing online Sunday worship, thanks especially to Lowell Kiesow. When Pierce County moved to Phase 2 in early June we began offering a once a month out-door worship in our courtyard and a monthly Communion worship via Zoom. We are still in Phase 2, with little evidence that we will be moving into Phase 3 in the near future. However, once Pierce County does move into Phase 3, we will consider a safe return to indoor worship. Attendance will be limited to 50% of seating capacity, requiring six feet of distancing between family groups, requiring all to wear face coverings, and engaging in very limited congregation-al speaking or singing. We will continue to provide worship online.
I know that we all wish this pandemic would end (and it will), but I also know that as of this date, no Trinity member has been diagnosed with COVID-19. We’re running this race well. Thank you for keeping one another safe and well.
Pastor Jeff Gaustad
What about Contributions?
By Cheryl Mays Comen
Even in difficult and chaotic times, we know that God is in the mix, working things for the
good. Mail and gifts come from near and far, from members and non-members. People reach
out from their past connections and sometimes we connect with new people too. Who knows
what will come of those new and old ties? Last weekend there were two small weddings in
Trinity’s sanctuary. One of our brides was the granddaughter of Helen and Clem Bjorke, Trinity
members for decades. The other bride was the daughter of our Childcare Director, Aurora
Wilson-Greene. Beautiful couples and so special to share in their joining.
The Maria Larson graveside service on Monday afternoon was such a lovely, small family
gathering. The guidelines of our governor require those ceremonies to be limited to just 30
participants. Every guest was a loved one, every comment made about Maria told us how
fondly regarded and cherished she was. The hymn and scriptures were perfect in every way
except the not singing. In fact the whole affair was so very quiet that when we received a gift
from Maria’s estate it seemed immediately appropriate to purchase a better, more powerful
PA system for any other events and gatherings that are bound to occur at our cemetery in the
next months of waiting to go back to normal and being able to have services inside. A perfect
memorial gift for a time such as this.
Our Food Pantry is really putting a lot of thought into how to gear up for the change of
seasons. And that did happen rather quickly, didn’t it! A new vinyl-wrapped carport-type
structure will be put into place as additional shelter in the walkway areas outside the east
entrances. Acrylic guards or dividers need to be placed between the “lanes” where clients will
wait to be served and where those who have been served will be walking back out. In the
meantime, next week is calling for nice weather again, so perhaps we can be well prepared in
time.
Continued on next page.
Communion Service via Zoom
Wednesday, October 21st we will hold a communion service via Zoom.
To participate, you can connect either by computer or by phone. Sign-in begins at
6:30 with the service itself beginning at 7:00 pm.
Contact Pastor Jeff at [email protected] or 253-495-9357 or Pastor Jonette at
[email protected] or 253-318-5947 to obtain the Zoom link or telephone
number.
To prepare for the service, we suggest you have wine and bread for each participant
at your site and a candle with a match or lighter. We look forward to sharing this
experience with you!
Speaking of the weather, we will hold the final 2020 outdoor worship service in our
Courtyard on October 4th, complete with blessing of the animals! I well remember last year’s
pet blessings and the happy looks on owners’ and pets’ faces. What a gift to have this final
little bit of summer weather to bring a little joy to us all in this way!
Beginning in October, a second congregation will be renting space from Trinity for their ser-
vices. They are Parkland Foursquare Church, a very young and youthful congregation. They
are growing, and so moving from a tiny building to this bigger space. During this pandemic
they have also been holding some outdoor services at a property owned by one of their
members just up the hill on the east side of Pacific. They are excited to join in partnership
with us here. I hope you will pray for them and think of them coming
gratefully into our community.
God bless us, every one, and keep us in your care.
Return of CONNECT for Youth
Connect gatherings are being held via Zoom. These sessions are led by Kiah Miller, a member of our Trinity community and junior at PLU! We look for her to bring excitement to the youth in this new way of “connecting”. Plan on participating! Interested people should email Pastor Jonette at [email protected] or Kiah MIller at [email protected].
LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF The good news is that there will be a fall ingathering in Seattle in late October. Because of Covid 19 it will look different in that it will be done by appointment over a four day period. It will be handled there by professional movers rather than the usual volunteers. Only one container will be loaded so there may not be room for everything but other shipments may be added before spring.
The most urgent need right now is for Personal Care Kits. To complete the kits our greatest need is bath towels and soap. Donations may be left in Beth’s office or in the Narthex.
School kits and Personal Care Kits will need assembling. There will be no work parties this time but we would welcome help from individuals or socially distanced pairs. Please call Juanita at 253 531-9183 if you can help or if you have questions.
Thank you all for your continued faithfulness to the work of Lutheran World Relief. We look forward to the day when we can be together in person for worship and fellowship.
