Christmas for Mentees

“You Have a Friend in Me,” the Program of Works, mentor project between Beta Pi and Premont ISD, continues to flourish as the Fall semester comes to an end. Mentors Adela Navarro, Yolanda Barrera, Gracie Gonzalez and Mellie Smithwick, visited with their mentees before the Christmas break. Each mentee was given a “survival basket” gift of items helpful to a teacher. The mentoring project will continue through the Spring semester.

“The Light at the End of the Rainbow”

It is heartbreaking to hear of abused and neglected children. Brenda Gonzalez, Early Intervention Specialist at ECI - Early Childhood Intervention - Project Nino, Alice, presented a program about the “Rainbow Room,” at the November meeting. Brenda explained the Rainbow Room is “an emergency resource center for CPS children and youth in removal situations.” The Rainbow Room is always in need of new personal items, clothing, school supplies and at that time, Christmas gifts. Beta Pi members donated much needed items and gifts to the Rainbow Room located at the Department of Human Service building, Alice. The Community Coalition for Children & Families (CCCF), a non-profit operated by volunteers whose mission is to form a partnership between Child Protective Services and the community, sponsors the Rainbow Room.

Pictured is Brenda Gonzalez ECI Specialist accepting a $50 donation from President Elva Garcia, on behalf of Beta Pi at the November meeting.

Add carrots and simmer for 2 minutes. And last add the chicken flavor or chicken broth and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. It can be served with a bit of milk or evaporated milk if you prefer cream of carrot soup. Add croutons or serve with crackers. ...Grace Estringel
