A Pentecost People

Now that was a birthday bash!

I write to you directly on the heels of our Pentecost Sunday celebration.

It all began 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus. The apostles (from the Greek word apostolos meaning “one sent forth”) were gathered and God blessed them with the Holy Spirit, allowing all who had come from far and wide to hear them — each in their own language. And the church was born.

Fast forward about 2000 years. From bells to bluegrass, organ to Upstream, Children’s to Chancel Choir, God’s mighty deeds of power were proclaimed through the language of music at the corner of Holt and Aurelius. The Holy Spirit used our excessively talented and dedicated musicians to fill our sanctuary with energy, passion, mystery and soul and then proceeded to blow us out the doors (geraniums in hand!), sending us out to deliver God’s love to the world.

We are the apostles.

We celebrate Dave and Karen Viele being sent to minister with the orphans and people of Muko, Uganda (p. 3). We celebrate our 18 youth and advisors being sent to the Yucatan Peninsula to build and worship, learn and pray with the village of Othon P Blanco (p. 4). We celebrate our team of tutors who were sent to touch the beautiful, but at-risk, lives of our A-team students from Sycamore Elementary (p.4). We celebrate our ten confirmands who are being sent this summer to learn, grow, explore and witness as they claim for themselves the faith with which they have been blessed (p. 7) We celebrate being sent to feed the hungry here in our own community through the Holt Community Food Bank (p. 2) and in the heart of the city through our service at Advent House (p. 10). And we celebrate our knitters and crochet-ers who are sending out their prayers of healing and hope through our new prayer shawl ministry that was officially born on Pentecost (p. 6).

Now with our Pentecost celebration behind us and the turn towards summer close at hand — with all the adventures and travels that come along with it — let us not forget that we are the apostles. Whether God is sending you across the world, up north to the cabin or just across the street to the grocery store, we are sent to carry the Good News of Jesus Christ and God’s mighty deeds of power wherever we go.

With gratitude, humility and purpose, we are a Pentecost people!

Welcome Steve Ogdie!

While Bekah is on maternity leave, we are blessed to have the

leadership of Steve Ogdie, our seminary intern through August

18. Steve is a second year student at Louisville Presbyterian

Theological Seminary, where he was also serving as Student

Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Jeffersonville, IN

(across the Ohio river from Louisville).

Steve has a wife named Amanda and a beagle terrier named

Luna — both of whom are holding down the fort in Louisville

while Steve is interning with us. So what will Steve be doing?

• Worship leadership

• Preaching during Kirk’s absences

• Pastoral care

• Assisting with Vacation Bible School

• Gaining as much pastoral experience as he can

• Working with a team of FPC-Holt members to critically reflect upon, and process, that

experience

In addition to gratefully receiving the gifts Steve will be sharing with us, the Session is

considering this a remarkable opportunity to serve the larger church, as we can all do our

part to help prepare a pastor for his ordained ministry. Welcome Steve!

Want to Make a

Difference? The Holt Community Food Bank needs 50 volunteers to help pack commodity boxes on Saturday, June 1 from 9:30am until 2pm at the USDA Commodities Warehouse at 4615 Tranter Street. These are boxes of food and personal items which get distributed to local families and seniors each month. The goal will be to pack 3,500 boxes for distribution. And with 50 volunteers working in assembly lines, it’s totally do-able! Need more info? Call Bonnie at 699-2252.

Exploratory Gatherings

If you’ve been waiting for a chance to

explore membership at FPC-Holt, you’re wait

is almost over. Following the Upstream service on July 21 and 28 (around 12:30pm), we’ll

start with lunch and then launch into topics like what it means to be a Presbyterian and,

specifically, what does it mean to be a

member of FPC-Holt. Each gathering will be important to your decision about joining the

church and will last until 3pm.

On July 28, the last ½ hour of our get-together

will be meeting with the Session so that you

can get to know them and they can get to

know you. Then, on August 18, you can

officially join the church at our outdoor ceremony (see next page).

Outdoor Worship on August 18!

More details will come later in the summer but, for now, we wanted to let you know that we’ll be holding an outdoor worship service at Der Happy Hollow at 10:30am. After worship, we’ll have a church family potluck picnic — bring your own meat (grills will be provided) and a dish to pass.

August 18 will be a special, “gotta be there” service for a few other reasons as well. That’s when we’ll welcome our new members into the family and welcome Bekah back from maternity leave. (And, though we’ll miss him, we’ll be wishing Steve well as he returns to Louisville after the 18th.)

And the final “must see” reason for being there is actually a “must hear” reason: our very own Bluegrass Crew will provide the music that day. On Pentecost Sunday, the Crew was such a hit that you asked for an encore — and “hear” it is!

The Vieles Are Back!

Join us in the Fellowship Hall on Saturday, June 8 at 7pm to hear all about the Viele’s mission trip to Uganda. Both Karen and Dave have some great stories and pictures to share and we can all take part in rejoicing that God has allowed our congregation to be a part of it!

The green will be Kentucky blue!

celebration On May 22, the A-Team tutors and students held their last session together before the summer break. It was great to see all of the smiles that the kids just couldn’t turn off — and those of the tutors who have been blessed to be a part of these at-risk kids lives over the past 9 months. Based on the feedback from parents, teachers, tutors and students, the Deacons will be sponsoring a bigger-and-better A-Team experience in 2013-2014. Thank you Deacons and Tutors!

Mission to Othon

By now you’ve heard the news that

FPC-Holt is sending 12 youth and 6

adults on a mission trip to Mexico. In

partnership with El Divino Redentor (the

Presbyterian church in Othon P. Blanco), our group will be working

to create a new recreation and worship space for the church,

and also leading a Vacation Bible School for as many as 100

children.

We’ll be leaving Lansing at 2:30am on June 13 and should be

back in Lansing at 11pm on June 21. During those 9 days, we’ll need your prayers for our safety, wisdom for responding to new

people and new situations with God’s grace and, overall, that the

Holy Spirit would work in us and through us to change hearts

(including our own) with the living water that only Christ can offer.

Please clip out these names and put them on your refrigerator or in your Bible. You’re very much a part of our team and we’re

grateful for all your support.

If you would like to support us “officially” before we leave, you still

have until June 9 to purchase “common good shares” ($10 each)

or “prayer shares” (the commitment to pray for us). Find a youth on Sunday and help us fill up the wall with certificates.

Get ready to immerse yourself into life in ancient Athens! It’s scheduled for Sunday, July 28th through Thursday, August 1st. It will be open for students entering Kindergarten through 5th grade, with youth and adult leaders of all ages. We’ll start with a meal for the workers and families at 5:15 pm. The opening celebration begins at 6:00 pm. Now, use your imagination! Think what it was like for Paul to arrive in the ancient city of Athens. While past its glory days, Athens was still considered the center of culture and intellectual thought. Imagine how Paul felt, walking through those famous streets and seeing one statue after another dedicated to pagan gods. Alone in this godless city, it would have been so easy for Paul to keep a low profile. To keep to himself and remain silent, at least until his friends arrived. But he couldn’t do it! His life goal – his passion – was to tell as many people as possible about Jesus, no matter what dangers he faced in the process. During Athens VBS, kids and adults will be challenged to share their faith in Jesus – just as Paul did – with shopkeepers, Dionysius (a member of the Athens council), and other residents. It allows participants a chance to practice sharing their faith in a safe environment. Talk about real life application! As an adult you could be one of the Athenians (like a shopkeeper or a resident), a Hebrew family leader, or even in our local band. Help is always needed with registration, meals to start the evening, and clean-up. We will need several easy-up awnings for our shops and colorful blankets to set the mood. Everyone is encouraged to wear costumes, so how about participating in a sewing bee? Our prayer is that Athens VBS will allow God’s Word to come to life like never before... touching lives, changing hearts, and drawing kids and adults closer to Christ. Talk to Eileen Krawczynski to find out how you can be a part of it.

Check the Christian Education OfficeCheck the Christian Education OfficeCheck the Christian Education OfficeCheck the Christian Education Office

We have music, dates for trainings and workshops, registration forms (both for students and youth), sign up lists (for youth and adults), and of course, the traditional donations list.

WARNING! The excitement is growing

and may be contagious! (At least that is my

prayer.) Eileen Krawczynski

Covenant Gathering 2013

Seasons of Faith June 30 to July 5

Join Christian friends from Synod of the Covenant and Synod of Lincoln Trails at Michindoh

Conference in Hillsdale. This year’s them is “Celebrate all the Seasons

of Faith” — seasons of the church year, seasons of life, and more. You can study scripture, focusing on Exodus and how our church may relate

to a "journey in the wilderness." You can study the history of hymns,

learn new ways to worship, discover or develop an enjoyment of art,

practice "out-loud" prayer, focus on grace, learn about social justice or

doing mission with youth!

Children and youth will be Celebrating the Seasons in creative ways, as well, in age-

appropriate classes with experienced, seasoned teachers. Everyone can enjoy the trails,

lake, water slide and water sports at Michindoh! Go to www.covenantgathering.com for

details on classes, costs and registration forms.

On May 19, six women with a

desire to make a difference

came together to discuss

starting a prayer shawl ministry

(even one woman who neither knitted or crocheted but was

willing to learn!) If you were unable to join them,

they’re having another organizational meeting in

between services on June 23.

“I will send

down the

showers in their

season; they

shall be showers

of blessing.”

Ezekiel 34:26

From July 16 through the 20th, over 5,000 Presbyterian

youth will invade the campus of Purdue for some time of

worship, study, recreation and mission. Known as the

Youth Triennium, it strives to connect youth and adults

with activities that inspire them to seek ways to connect

their lives with their growing faith.

Please pray for the Triennium and, in particular, keep

our congregation’s “Triennialists” in your prayers:

 Becca Howe

 Alexander Knapman

Before we get to a picnic

on August 18 (see page 3),

we’ve got a Very Important

picnic June 4 at noon. That’s when Kirk and Steve will host the

VIPS at the church for the 3rd

annual Pastor Picnic and our last

chance to gather before next fall. RSVP to the office by June 3.

Each year, it is a privilege to introduce a

group of confirmands to the basic

foundations of our faith and to help each

other grow into that faith even more. This

year’s program begins with an “Adventure

Camp” in Louisville from July 7-20 . While in

Louisville we’ll check out the Seminary, tour

the offices of PC(USA), and explore our faith

in the context of the New River Gorge rock

climbing, rafting and kayaking). This year’s

class of confirmands include:

 Logan Carr

 Elizabeth Hill

 Laura Schnepf

 Annika Hultin

 Nick Fish

 Pearson Miller

 Maddie Evans

 Zander Knapman

 Sarah Zietlow

 Melissa Harvey

In addition to praying for these young

people throughout the confirmation process

(starting in July), the congregation plays an

even greater role in their lives. We are

looking for mentors for each confirmand

who will walk with them through the journey

of confirmation (this would include praying

for them and checking in with them at least on a monthly basis). Let us know in the

office if you’d like to be one of these special

people in a confirmand’s life.

Shaft Scholarship Available If you’re a recent graduate from high school and entering a college program, you

are eligible for a Shaft scholarship. These

monies, made possible by the family of Leo

Shaft, are divided among the applicants

from our congregation who apply. And applying could not be easier: simply email

or call the church office!

Men on a Mission: Retreat 2013 While not a mission in the sense of traveling

to foreign countries, we will be

traveling to the woods of

Camp Wakanda for a week-

end get away to enjoy

some fishing or golfing,

and regain some spiritual

perspective. We leave

in the afternoon of

August 23 and return

on August 25. Cost is

$60 which covers

food and lodging

(bunk beds!). If golf is your

thing, the Michaywe golf course is right around the

corner from Camp Wakanda and it costs

$61 for 18 holes. Sign up in the Narthex

Notebook or talk to Kirk if you’re interested.

The Holt Relay for Life takes place

from 1pm on June 21 to 1pm on June 22 at the Holt High School track — and we want to include you!

Postage & PDFs Thanks to all of you who submitted your email address to the church and thanks for your willingness to “go digital”. Because of you, we are now able to send emails and the

Bagpipe to over half of our mailing list! Even using stamps for the remainder of the mailing list, we are at or below the cost of a bulk mailing (plus you get to see pictures in color ☺). And remember, you can always request a paper copy and we’ll be happy to send it along.

The

Course

Calls —

for a cause You don’t want to miss the First Annual FPC-Holt Golf Outing on Sunday, June 9 at 1:30pm at Chisolm Hills Golf Course. We’ll host a 2-person scramble (we’ll pair you up with someone if you don’t have a partner), with prizes available for the longest drive, closest to the pin, etc. As an added bonus, we’ll all come back to the Cloister afterward to have a BBQ. The registration fee (payable to FPC-Holt) is $30 which buys you a cart and the privilege of supporting the youth leaving for the mission trip to Mexico on June 13.

“…God gave the growth.” 1 Cor 3:6 Garden news abounds at FPC-Holt:

Thank you to all the geranium givers and planters. The red is a cheery beacon to those around us. Special thanks to Bonnie for putting the master plan together!

Thanks to Malissia Stone for her hard work in the hot sun to make the Cloister such a colorful haven for meditation. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a moment to step out and enjoy the beauty.

Thanks to our Witness Committee (especially Sherri Washabaugh) who plans for our community garden. (The food will go to the Food Bank for distribution).

An advance thanks to all of you who might be willing to share your bounty with us in the sanctuary each week. If you’ve got a flower garden that you’d be willing to share, we’re always looking for flower arrangements in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings.

And thanks be to God from whom all blessings flow!

Serving Christ through serving others

ne of the ministries we support in a hands-on way throughout the year is the Advent House. Every other month,

our Witness Committee coordinates the shopping, cooking and delivery of a meal to Advent House guests. Different groups within our congregation volunteer for this labor of love (e.g., the youth, young adults), and provide a week-end meal for over 150 people. In case you’re not familiar with Advent House, it is essentially located on the ground floor of the North Westminster (by the St. Lawrence campus). The Weekend Day Shelter program that we support annually serves 34,000 meals to more than 700 homeless and 1,500 non-homeless people. Their Shelter Home program locates shelter for homeless families, as well as homeless single adults who are working to overcome substance abuse. Finally, Advent House offers a Literacy Program that provides classes in reading, writing and math to adults and children. For those adults who desire it, they are also provided prep classes for taking their GED. Interested in volunteering or donating? Sherri Washabaugh is looking for 6-8 people to help her prepare and serve the meal on July 21 We also have an “appeal” sent by the Advent House and donation information on the bulletin board across from the office.

nother ministry that has sent us an appeal for help recently is the Loves and Fishes Ministry. Loaves and Fishes provides

emergency overnight shelter as well as transitional housing and services (Zacchaeus House for women with children and Luke’s House for single men). They are a Christian-based shelter and they depend on local churches to provide volunteers and monetary support. This is the shelter that we most often refer people to when they come to FPC-Holt for assistance.

The overnight shelter provides guests with a room and meals for up to 14 days. Loaves and Fishes does their laundry every day and they meet with a Guest Advocate who helps them create a plan to resolve their situation and then reviews their progress each day. The Guest Advocate connects them with community resources (CATA bus tokens, AA meetings, etc.) They also help with prescription co-pays and occasionally pay a portion of a rent deposit. The transitional housing programs allow up to two years for the guest to become stable.

Currently, Loaves and Fishes is looking for volunteers for the evening program from 6-10pm, and an overnight volunteer to serve the “sleep shift” from 10pm to 7:30am. In addition to helping new guests settle in, you would join them for dinner or breakfast and enjoy a lively conversation with the guests. If neither of these appeals to you, they need volunteers to help them maintain their properties: grass to mow, flowers to plan and minor repairs which need to be done. More info is on the bulletin board.
