Firstly, an update on Open Gender with some recent progress on the Exemption that Bowls SA has applied for from the Equal Opportunity Tribunal. A Preliminary

Hearing date has been set for Wednesday 25 November 2009 before Judge Trenorden in the District Court with a further hearing proposed for early December. Once these hearings have occurred further information will be provided. At the Bowls SA Board meeting on 26 October 2009 the Board ratified the formation of a Boundary Review Committee comprising the following members:• Bob Cooper - Chair (Ascot Park &

Region 11)• Brian Cooper (Mt. Gambier, Lower

South East Bowling Association & Region 1)

• Carol Bammann (Melrose, Flinders Women’s Bowling Association & Region 3)

• Jeff Brown (Glenelg and Region 11)• John Spillane (Goolwa, Great

Southern Bowling Association & Region 7)

• Ken Stokes (Berri, Riverland Men’s Bowls Association & Region 4)

• Mike Brown (Somerton & Region 11)The main objective of this committee is to review the current boundaries of Bowls SA which have been in place since 2004 following the unification of the RSABA and SAWBA in 2003. Other issues that will be considered and addressed by the Committee during the review include:•Applications from Clubs to transfer from their existing Associations and/or Regions and applications from Associations to transfer from their existing Regions and the associated implications•Population and demographic trends•Effects on Associations and/or

Regions resulting from the Bowls SA Open Gender Policy

•Distances required to travel to competitions

•Implications of boundary changes on remote areas

•Aligning the men’s and women’s sections of Clubs within the same Association and/or Region

•The feasibility of unifying men’s and women’s Associations.

As part of the review a consultative process will be undertaken over the next few months to ensure key stakeholders are able to contribute to the review. Information has been distributed to all Clubs, Associations and Regions to provide them with the opportunity to contribute to the process. The procedure will be thorough and be guided by what is in the best interest of the sport of bowls with a report and recommendations to be submitted by the Committee to the Board with any changes to be implemented for Season 2011/12. As I have previously mentioned, Bowls SA is currently undertaking the process to develop an updated Strategic Plan for the organisation. One of the most important facets of this is stakeholder consultation. With this in mind, Bowls SA is looking to engage the members to ascertain their thoughts and provide them with the opportunity to contribute to the future of the sport. This is vital for the success of the planning process and I encourage every member to take the time to contribute. For further information please refer to the article on page 20.

Many clubs have been celebrating special anniversaries and season openings over the last few months and I have had the pleasure of attending the Karoonda 50th, Holdfast

Bay Season Opening, Hills Women’s Association 50th, Port Augusta 100th, Kimba 50th, Justices Season Opening at Novar Gardens and Port Noarlunga 70th. Thank you to the members for making me welcome. General Manager Ben Scales, Vice President Kenn Rogers and I recently attended the Annual General Meeting of the Council of Bowls Australia in Melbourne. Congratulations to Brian Marsland OAM, a member of the Grange Bowling Club, on being re-elected unopposed as President of Bowls Australia and Barbara Klose from the Northern Territory on her re-election as Vice President.A major issue discussed by the Council was the decline in the number of registered members; a concern facing most sports. A graph was shown that demonstrated that each bowling club in Australia would need to attract at least three new members a year to stop this downward slide. However if we look at the overall number participating in our sport, including night owl and casual bowlers, the outcome is very different and shows a very positive future. The National Merchandising Program and the allocation of funds to each State and Territory was discussed and adopted. Did you know that the revenue from this scheme goes back into the State’s development programs?A very interesting morning was spent at the Western Bulldogs Football Club where their CEO Campbell Rose and senior management gave us an insight on how the club had gone from being significantly in debt, to a profitable multi million dollar business and communitiy hub. Some of the outside interests that will be based at this facility include the

Victoria University who are establishing their Sports Science department that will work closely with the football department and a commercial indoor sports stadium. They are also in the process of building a child care centre. The Bowls Australia Board met with the Board of Bowls SA on Monday 26 October as part of a plan to meet regularly with State and Territories on a rotational basis. This provided an excellent oppurtunity for the Board to discuss with Bowls Australia issues facing the sport in South Australia and to hear about the future direction Bowls Australia is looking to take. A joint Bowls Australia / Bowls SA Forum, open to all members, was held at Holdfast Bay Bowling Club on Tuesday 27 October and it was disappointing that more members didn’t take the opportunity to attend.I encourage clubs to visit the Bowls Australia website to access resources such as the Fit 4 Bowls program (see page 35) and the “My Bowls” option for clubs to set up their own website to keep club records and bowling achievements.

Cool conditions didn’t deter the country and metropolitan players from providing a great display of skills in the Schroeter, Kennedy and Under 18 Country v Metro Shield games at Encounter Bay Bowling Club on Sunday 25 October. The day coincided with the National Pink Bowls Day established to raise money for the McGrath Foundation and thanks to members the clubhouse was a vision of pink balloons and stunning pink table decorations. The players and spectators also wore pink clothing and ribbons and $510.30 was raised for this very worthy cause. The morning saw the country men almost pull off a win, however, they ‘fell in a hole’ on the last two ends to go down 64 - 70.After lunch despite feeling like a siesta the country men put up a fight but were no match for the strong metro side; the Schroeter Shield going to the Metro with the final result Metro 158 – Country 120. The Under 18 boys and girls made a strong impression delivering skilful shots which were a credit to them and to their Managers and Coaches Leon Crane and Faye Luke.

Under the rules for the country and metro side selection, and with the shift of two country juniors to metro, it could have been assumed that the metro side would out balance the country but this was not the case. The country girls in particular produced some very interesting results. The format was Pairs and Triples in the morning with Singles and Fours in the afternoon which aligns with national and interstate competitions. The athletes played in many different combinations and their keen rivalry brought out some very pleasing results, providing the coaches and selectors great feedback for team selection for the January tests to be held at Holdfast Bay and Brighton Bowling Clubs in the first two weeks of January 2010.The boys had some varying results, with a very big win by the metro side in the Triples, the country taking out the Fours by two shots in the afternoon, and a very close contest in the Singles saw the metro win 25 – 20.With high quality bowls, great enthusiasm, obvious enjoyment and keen sportsmanship we can be very proud of these very talented players.

Final Scores: Boys: Metro 99 - Country 62 Girls: Country 86 - Metro 81 The Metro sides, as inaugural winners, were presented with the new Under 18 Country v Metro trophy. After the morning’s play the Metro women, with a win on three rinks and one loss by two shots, were in front overall by 19 shots. The Country women came back with vengeance after lunch and with three ends to play scores were level. However, the Metro side showed determination and despite the final result, down on three rinks and drawing on the fourth, the morning win meant they still came through to win by eight shots (134 - 126) and retain the Kennedy Shield. The challenge is now set for the Country sides to come back next year to reverse the trend and win all three events.

Congratulations to the Port Noarlunga Bowling Club on celebrating their 70th Anniversary on Sunday, October 25.To mark the occasion a dinner was held with members and guests including the President of Bowls SA, Ivy Kluske, President of Southern Association, Don Crosby and his wife Margaret, President of the Southern Women’s Association Janny Wagenaar, the Mayor of City of Onkaparinga Lorraine Rosenberg and the Club’s distinguished Patron Joan Matulick attending.

The founding of the club is attributed to the late Albert Young, who was the owner of the Port Noarlunga Garage in the late 1930s, whose enthusiasm and foresight encouraged others to attempt such a project as forming the bowling club. Albert was the club’s inaugural President and Reg Moxon first Secretary, a position he held for 20 years. The location of the bowling green was on the river swampland, on the eastern side of Saltfleet Street and south of the bridge but as the greens suffered due to frequent flooding they were relocated onto council land at Witton Bluff. After much hard work, the new greens opened on 13 November 1948. It took a lot more hard work to build the clubhouse, which was opened on the 24 April 1949 by the Governor of South Australia, Sir Willoughby Norrie. It was here that the club enjoyed many years of success until 1986 when, due to an increase in membership and no parking facilities, the club moved to its present location on River Road. The club is proud of its modern and well-furnished clubrooms, two good grass greens and an excellent synthetic

green. Currently membership stands at approximately 150 and growing. The social committee is continually arranging events that are well attended and on alternate Fridays, a club dinner is held.

High Performance The player will need to be comfortable playing an array of shots from draw to add, draw to save, draw to position, draw to block and weighted shots as directed, and also the ability to drive, change a head to give the Skip a chance to convert the head and conversion shots. The Third needs to have knowledge of the rules, be able to look for dangers at the head, observe for opponents tactics, measuring close shots, not going near the head when the opponent is in control of the mat, advising the Skip if the head has changed, making sure communication is loud and precise, maintaining control at their end of the rink and if unsure of a situation asking the Skip to come and assess the head.As a rule the Third doesn’t offer advice to the Skip unless asked, however this can vary depending on the partnership between the Skip and Third.Another good attribute of a Third is to share confidence amongst the side as this will eliminate negative comments within the side. The Third, as the link between all team members, needs to be compatible with the other players and to maintain performance follow a strong training routine to cover all the different shots he or she may be required to play during a match.SkipperThe Skip, like the Third, must have many talents. They need to be the captain or the director of the side and have the ability to draw the best from his or her team through respect and effective leadership, emotional control, knowledge and confidence. In addition, being able to encourage compatibility, provide direction, encouragement and communication, and successful game planning are crucial. The Skip needs the ability to draw to save or add, play positional bowls, be a good weight player and be able to control players to enable the team to perform cohesively.Through direction, the Skip can call shots on percentages, avoid changing players hands too often, aim to get bowls in the head, give clear directions when calling a shot and while it is inevitable that each Skip will read the head differently, endeavour to call the correct shot each time.A Skip’s communication skills and encouragement of all players will help when a member is struggling and help that person to still feel part of the team.

the mat and rolls the jack to a position on the rink where the Skip indicates or a spot selected to benefit the side. Leads don’t have to get touches, or be on the jack every end, but if the Lead’s bowls are consistently around the scoring zone the chances are the heads will be more favourable for the side, with the opportunity to score and not lose multiple shots.Regular practice by Leads enhancing their ability to draw shot to jacks during training can only help the side and team. Leads can also practice the drill of rolling jacks prior to a training session which will help achieve the required length set by the Skip or the team’s decision on length. To maintain involvement in the game Leads are encouraged to pick up bowls for other team members, and importantly give positive support rather than criticism.Second The Second, often referred to as the position that has no value, does in fact carry extra responsibilities including keeping the scoreboard up to date, ensuring the scorecard is neat and consulting the opposing second on a regular basis to maintain accuracy. If the Lead hasn’t been able to get bowls into the scoring zone then the Second is tasked to get shot or get their bowls into the scoring area. The player also needs to have the ability to play positional bowls to help protect the Lead’s good bowls or favourable heads for the side. The Second will at times be required to play varying weighted shots from one metre and upwards or play weight and then back to a draw shot. The need to be competent at playing a variety of shots means the player should concentrate their training on a number of different drills including draw shots, conversion shots, positional bowls, changing hands after each bowl and a weighted shot then draw shot aftereach bowl. The Second should have the same attributes as a Lead in a side to keep involved in a game by helping to pick up bowls for other team members, giving support and not criticising other team members.ThirdThe Third has a pivotal role requiring experience as a bowler and the ability to build a working relationship with the Skip to form a compatible and strong partnership to enhance the team’s success.

Undoubtedly every bowler has an opinion on how to play the game and the roles and responsibilities within a side. Whatever that opinion might be, the main concern is what works for us as individuals when we play in a certain position within a side. We generally listen to information regarding each position and take on board what works for us and let information that doesn’t pass through. The consensus on which positions in a side are more important varies, so in establishing the role and responsibilities for each position a clearer picture is possible.Understandably, a team of four players working together as a unit will have a better chance of gaining success compared to a team of individuals.LeadA good Lead in most cases sets up a game for the players following. Short bowls by a Lead transfer pressure to the Second, therefore the Lead should attempt to deliver his or her two bowls as close as possible to the jack or at least in a scoring zone whether they have control of the jack or not.The new rule giving the mat away has changed the Lead’s duty but importantly when the side has control of the mat or has been given the mat the Lead places

Showing respect of not only fellow team members but the skills of the opposition and all involved in the sport is another important leadership quality. The overall talent required by a Skip includes not only all these points but also the knack of knowing player strengths, weaknesses, rules, how to build a head, reading the green, playing for the side/team and knowing when to attack the head and when not to.The Skip like the Third, Second and Lead needs to have a practice routine in place to cover all the different shots he or she may encounter during a match.

SA v WA Test SeriesPlayed at Manning Memorial Bowls Club in WA from 9 to 12 October 2009, the competition was played over eight test matches with three on Day 1, three on Day 2 and two on Day 3. Two points were awarded for each winning game and one for a tie, the test series being decided on total points accrued over the three days. The South Australian side of Jackie Gardiner, Jeanette Hill, Lyn Prosso, Denise Caulfield, Wendy Clarke, Jeff Aworth, Adam Forbes, Wayne Ruediger, Simon Dorr and Adrian Green played in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours with the twist being traditional games, sets play and mixed matches with a total of 38 matches played over the three days. The format provided a good insight into where the selected players are situated against quality opposition. This gave me, as State Coach, an opportunity to see players performing in different positions and also an idea of what needs to be done for SA to become competitive at State and National competitions. The SA men’s team performed very well

and out played the WA team; producing consistent bowls and playing the big shots when required. The SA women’s team found tough competition from the WA ladies on Day 1 and during the course of the day a new style of play was introduced to match the opponents. The team started to change their way of thinking and some positive results started to become evident on Day 2. The changes encompassed considering shot selection and playing the percentages during the game and the benefits of the new style started to show on the second and third day of competition. The last day of competition was mixed and this gave the selected players the opportunity to learn from the more experienced members of the side. The team was behind by three game wins coming into the last day and the players had a challenge to win six from the eight remaining games. They did not disappoint winning seven of the eight to give SA the win. Final scores were SA 41 points to WA 35 points. The opportunity to play against quality opponents is always good for the development of players and the opportunity to look at new styles of play. The team must be commended on the way they stuck together and did the State proud at this competition.

Bowls SA and Bowls Australia representatives met with the Holdfast Bay Bowls & Croquet Club recently for an informal meeting to discuss progress in preparation for this event. While planning is going well Bowls SA needs help from volunteers to act as either Liaison Officers or Scoreboard Attendants. If you feel you may be able to help in anyway, please contact me on 8234 7544 or [email protected] and I will send out the relevant forms.

Bowls Australia and Focal Promotions have announced that the National Final of the AERF Mixed Pairs will be held at the Australian Open from February 14-20. By now your club should have received the relevant application form and information brochure. As this is over two months earlier than last year, it is vitally important that Regions complete their Regional Final prior to or by 10 January 2010.The State Final has been scheduled for Friday 22 January 2010, starting at 9.30am with the venue still to be confirmed. The format will be Knockouts with each match played over two sets of nine ends plus a tie break if required.

Programs Coordinator

It has now been two months since I started with Bowls SA and it is interesting how perceptions change. I can recall my first conversation with Ben Scales after I was successful in obtaining the Programs Coordinator role. We had a good laugh as he mentioned that he was looking forward to talking to me in a few months to see, as a bowler, how my opinion of Bowls SA had changed. It’s only been a short time but I’m happy to express my thoughts. The work that gets done behind the scenes is extraordinary and I urge any bowler who has an issue to ‘talk to the converted’. While we would all love to have the skills to be a mind reader, in reality we haven’t and if you have something to say or offer, then let us know. Bowls SA encourages constructive criticism and positive solutions from our members to improve the way we administer the sport.www.bowlssa.com.auBowls SA is continuing to improve the content and design of the website. John Bevin’s weekly Premier 1 Round Up has been well recieved and has been the topic of many conversations. He has also been supplying a Great Southern report, as has Kenn Rogers on the SYP. If other country associations secretaries prepare articles for your local paper, please feel free to copy to Bowls SA and we will endeavour to include them on our site.

The Freemasons SA/NT Night Owls Super Series is gradually taking shape with the support of close to half the Metropolitan Clubs so far. To those clubs that have expressed interest, thank you for your support. Over the coming weeks I will be visiting clubs that have responded negatively to the new format to talk with them and see their Night Owls in action. With thanks to Freemasons the generous prizes on offer, which come at no cost to the club or players, is an excellent reason in itself to ensure your club is involved.

Super SeriesBowls SA is endeavouring to begin the first series with Regional Events to commence in the week starting Monday 7 December and if possible play each Regional Final on a different night of that week. If this is not possible, all Regional Finals will be played on Friday 11 December so that they don’t interfere with club’s Night Owls competitions. The Super Series Final will then be played on Friday 18 December. All evenings will commence at 7.00pm.

The second of the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme courses is now ready to be rolled out to clubs across the State. The Introductory Coaching Course is aimed at coaches who wish to be involved with first time bowlers such as Night Owlers and school students. The course, which outlines the basics of bowls, will be run over one day which includes all assessments. This is a great opportunity for you to become an accredited coach trained to assist at junior and school clinics as well as your Night Owls and Social programs. If you are interested in becoming an Introductory Coach please complete an application form (available from your club or the Bowls SA website www.bowlssa.com.au) and forward to Bowls SA, indicating the course the participant wishes to attend from the course dates below:Somerton Bowling Club (King George Ave, Somerton Park)Tuesday December 8, 10am-3pmMcLaren Vale Bowling Club (147 Main Rd, McLaren Vale)Friday December 11, 10am-3pmClearview Bowling Club (Gordon Ave, Clearview)Friday December 18, 10am-3pmFor Clubs and Members who wish to do the Introductory Course in their Country Region, please contact Bowls SA to arrange a course in your area. Mid North School’s Education Cooperative The MNSEC Cluster began in 1987 to maintain a guarantee of curriculum delivery in the senior years of schooling. The schools at the heart of this Cooperative were Gladstone, Peterborough and Jamestown High Schools, Booleroo Centre District School and Orroroo Area School. The cluster has now expanded to include Quorn Area School as well as partnerships with Burra Community School and Waikerie High School.Over time the focus has broadened to include curriculum hub groups, shared professional development for staff, and shared curriculum and social events for students. The MNSEC SportsFest, an initiative of the Office for Recreation and Sport, was a one day event designed by young people, for young people involved or interested in sport.Held on Thursday 5 November 2009 in Jamestown, the program was developed by a student working group from the Jamestown Community School as part of their school studies with the aim of providing an avenue for young people to experience a range of alternate sports and activities.Bowls SA Development Officer Kelli Wray coached three one hour ‘come and try’ bowls sessions during the day with approximately 15 students in each group. Activities included the Krak A Jak mats, corner to corner draw bowling and other fun games. The students had a great time and for many this was their first experience of bowls. A number of students showed great progress in only one hour and we even had a few resting touches by the end of the sessions.Thank you to the Jamestown Community School students whose hard work ensured the day was agreat success.

Kindy Kids get bowled overFor seven weeks, 38 kindergarten kids from Marryatville OSHS (Out of School Hours Services) have been participating in an Active After-School Communities (AASC) program to learn how to play bowls. Using hoops, beanbags, frisbees and tennis balls the children are learning the skills of hitting and drawing to targets. Using an underarm delivery they play small games at different stations, such as drawing into hoops, hitting cones and drawing to a target mat to score points. Also with astro turf tennis courts available the kids learn to use small junior lawn bowls which have a bias and come in a variety of colours. The AASC program is an initiative of the Australian Sports Commission which aims to increase the level of physical activity of primary school students through a variety of sports. The enthusiasm and enjoyment the kids demonstrate is a clear indication of the success of the program, that bowls can be developed in children as young as four years old and is truly a game for any age.

Blake Walden, Tim Wormald, Don Richards, Ben Johnson and Chris Hennessey of the Southern Jacka Crackas

And We’re off!For over 18 months junior bowlers have been meeting under the guidance of Vic Culbertson and Sunday 8 November saw the culmination of the planning when South Australia’s first Henselite Junior Development Squad was formed at the Morphett Vale Bowling Club.Vic, along with assistant coaches Ross White (Morphett Vale), Mike Greenfield (Aldinga) and Dean Newton (Reynella), set up a number of training drills to start the day followed by a short game.Over a few iceblocks, the initial meeting of five juniors Ben Johnson, Tim Wormald, Don Richards, Blake Walden and Chris Hennessey decided on a name and colours for their squad. Their Henselite playing shirts emblazoned with ‘Southern Jacka Crackas’ in Black, Maroon and White will soon be seen across the Southern Adelaide suburbs. With the first squad up and running Bowls SA is pushing hard to form more squads in areas all around the State. As well as the new squad in the South, we have three other confirmed junior coordinators, Annette Rowntree (Yorke Peninsula), Ron Mitchell (Western suburbs) and Phil Groves (Hills) who have been appointed with a further four to be announced in the near future. As will be the case with the Southern Jacka Crackas, Henselite as Major Sponsor of the Junior Development Squad will provide playing shirts designed by squad members. The squad members will also get to name their squad.Once the coordinators and squads are established there will be opportunities for regular inter–squad games and squad activities which will provide an avenue for juniors from all over the State to develop their skills and have fun with their peers. Application forms for juniors to join their local Henselite Squad will be available at www.bowlssa.com.au in December or for more information contact John Cranwell on 8234 7544 or [email protected] ...keep your eyes peeled, there will soon be a squad near you!

Roll Up! 1909—2009

Port Augusta Bowling Club Inc.

The year is 1909, the town is only 55 years old; its population is nearly 1,600 combining three town corporations – Port Augusta, Davenport and Port Augusta West – Stirling North is in the District Council of Woolundunga. Port Augusta Town Council’s budget is a grand total of £1,574/17/10.Water is supplied from springs at Woolundunga and a reservoir at Nectar Brook. Most of our fine buildings were built in the boom times of the 1860-80s – there are 10 substantial hotels as well as a couple at Stirling North, five churches and several banks. The Institute, Post Office, Police Station, Customs House, Water Works, a large state school and a well-equipped hospital are all here, and the Court House and Town Hall are said to be among the finest outside Adelaide. The Town Hall has electric lighting – the rest of the major buildings have acetylene gas lights.Commercial Road and some other roads are sealed, but not the road to the hospital. The town squares are named Gladstone and Disraeli, after the two English Prime Ministers in 1868. Gladstone Square has a quoits ground, and a stage with an acetylene plant for open air performances (but no rotunda as yet).

Disraeli Square has four asphalt tennis courts.Noted as the nearest seaport to the centre of the continent, Port Augusta is a major shipping point for agricultural, pastoral and mineral products – there is a fine big wharf with railway lines and storage areas. The South Australian Railways have a station in Commercial Road and loco. sheds – railway lines run as far as Marree, Broken Hill and Adelaide.Port Augusta is the starting point of the Overland Telegraph lines, and there is also weekly communication via the Adelaide Steamship Company’s Rupara.W. Thomas & Co’s flourmill probably the only fire-proof mill in Australia boasts the best milled flour in the Commonwealth (it was later destroyed by fire!) The S.A. brewery is now only used for distribution of ales from Adelaide as the water was unfit for brewing, but they produce fine aerated waters and cordials. Go to Chas Geddes & Co for wood; Young & Gordon are general merchants and agents for a wide district; and it’s Carrig’s for your chemist needs. In the sporting area we have a racing club, rifle club, quoits club, a regatta committee, a town band, tennis, cricket, skating, athletics, cycling, and our football team plays inter-town matches (The bridge is still 18 years into the future, and Whyalla barely exists as Hummock Hill.)Our nearest neighbour, Quorn, is a prosperous town with a population of 1,300.It is a time of great optimism – the survey for the Transcontinental Railway to the west has begun. After some lean years, this was the fourth good season,

and the second year of above average rainfall. (Next year will see the highest rainfall on record to date – 17.52 inches.)The annual subscription for the weekly Port Augusta Dispatch is 5/- (50¢) or it costs 1d. per issue. It covers news from the local and surrounding area, as well as items of interest from abroad. There are regular contributions of fiction and poetry. Horse racing and cricket receive close attention, and items about wandering camels are a recurring theme, as are gold discoveries in the north. Halley’s Comet is on the way, and someone has discovered that there is oxygen on Mars, so there is surely life there! There was discussion of introduction of the Penny Post, to eventually replace separate postal services in each state, but the first Commonwealth stamps were not introduced until 1913. The real news is often interspersed with advertisements, with startling headlines about wonderful cures for just about any ailment – from using Bile Beans and Zam-Buk, in particular. At the request of Convenors W.G. Pryor, J. Riddell and J. Holdsworth a public meeting was held in the Town Hall on Monday 9 August 1909 to propose that Port Augusta have a bowling club for “This fine old gentleman’s pastime”.Advice was that a green could be laid down for under £50, requiring a ground 120 feet long and at least 50 feet wide. Maintenance would require a man’s labour three half days a week. A subscription of 21s per annum was suggested. With the blessing of the Council of the day, a subsequent canvass for members resulted in the Club being formed at a meeting held on 31 August, with interest from 45 members. The initial subscription was set at one guinea ($2.10), and this remained the rate for a number of years.Council gave permission to use a portion of Disraeli Square, sharing it with the

a plaque recognising the immense input of members who have worked voluntarily for the Club over the past 100 years. Presentations were made to Club President Kim Hanlin of a plaque, by Mayor Baluch, and a State flag and two copper Parliamentary medallions for use as trophies, by Member for Stuart Hon. Graham Gunn. The whole club was a picture, with evidence of lots of thought and hard work going into the presentation of the gardens, floral decorations, table settings, and photo display. A formal dinner was held that evening, attended by 120 invited guests, including a number of past members. President of Bowls SA, Ivy Kluske, launched a book on the history of the Club entitled “Roll Up! 1909 - 2009” extensively researched and compiled by members Yvonne Nicholson and Cynthia Collins.A number of the Club’s past presidents and life members were involved in the various events of the evening, which included the launch of a commemorative wine and cutting of the birthday cake. President Ivy presented Club President Kim with a Bowls SA Centenary

Tennis Club, and this has been the location of the Club for its whole life. Two rinks were laid down, and the first clubhouse (described as a weatherboard hut) was built in 1911. The clubhouse was rebuilt in 1937, entirely by the members, and then further extended in 1952 and 1969. The present clubrooms were erected at the opposite end of the greens and opened in 1983.Initially the Club had two rinks, which were extended over the years until they were able to play in both directions on a green of seven rinks in 1955. A further portion of land was obtained from the Tennis Club, and by 1964 an additional four rinks had been laid down.

Water supply had been an ongoing problem for the green

keepers over the years, with season openings

and competitions often delayed

by the poor condition of the green. In the early 1930s, after several years of particularly low rainfall, the Club nearly

closed, but perseverance

paid off and they soon prospered

again. In 1944 the River Murray pipeline

arrived, and water was no longer such a major issue.

The first synthetic green was put down in 1992; lights were initially installed in 1925, and the present lights were put in place in 2008, when a new synthetic green was also laid. Membership was extended to women in 1955, and the Port Augusta Women’s Bowling Club was formed with 43 members in October of that year. The ladies are no longer associate members but full members of the single Club which presently has a membership of approximately 110.One hundred years on from the first public meeting the Club celebrated their centenary over the Labour Day long weekend, 3 – 5 October 2009. Visitors were made welcome on Friday evening and formal proceedings began on Saturday afternoon, when Her Worship the Mayor, Mrs Joy Baluch, AM unveiled

Roll Up! 100 Years of Port Augusta

Certificate to commemorate 100 years of bowling at the Port Augusta Bowling Club. The celebrations continued appropriately with two days of bowling culminating an excellent weekend of great hospitality, friendships renewed, memories shared and a fitting acknowledgement of the Club’s proud history.

Furthermore, it is a patented product registered to Drakes Pride.BA is not prohibiting a person developing a bowlers arm for an individual where the current product is not suitable – however, with two versions (thumb and palm release) across three lengths, and a wheelchair suitable version, it is difficult to see how an individual is not adequately catered for.In summary, BA is charged with approving devices to be manufactured for use in the sport of bowls in Australia (DR 3.4.1). Each State/Territory association is responsible for the approval of players using the BA approved devices (DR 3.4.2).

Lawn Bowls ForumSouth Australians were provided with the opportunity to meet with state and national bowls administrators on Tuesday 27 October at the Holdfast Bay Bowls & Croquet Club.Sixty five people attended this unique forum which was organised to provide information to stakeholders and more information about the function and roles delivered by Bowls SA and Bowls Australia.Presentations were delivered by Bowls Australia CEO, Neil Dalrymple, and Bowls SA General Manager, Ben Scales both of whom answered questions from the floor regarding a range of topics including:•Plans for addressing the national

membership decline•Open gender competitions in South

Australia•Night owls program•Alternative competition structures•National Coach Accreditation Scheme.“It’s great to have the opportunity for bowlers and administrators to talk directly to representatives of the state and national bodies. This forum provided a great opportunity to ask questions and provide input into the direction of our sport.” Mr Dalrymple said.Mr Scales added “Bowls SA and Bowls Australia continue to work closely together to address the issues facing the sport and the forum was another demonstration of this collaborative approach.”Bowls Australia will provide similar opportunities across all states and territories in the near future.

Bowlers Arm AdviceAs a result of several recent queries regarding the manufacture and use of a ‘Bowlers Arm’, the Bowls Australia (BA) National Officiating Committee (NOC) wishes to provide the following information. In general, players are not permitted to modify a bowlers arm. Any player who does modify a bowlers arm (or manufacture a new bowlers arm) requires approval for the device to be used for competition in Australia – this approval is given by the BA NOC (note: any product can be submitted for approval to the BA NOC).It is also worth noting that the NOC will only approve a bowlers arm if it provides a clear benefit over products which currently exist in the marketplace. Additionally, the bowler’s arm which is approved by BA (and the only bowlers

Drill 2: Drawing Online - OfflineThe aim of this drill is to draw to a jack on the centre line and then to draw to a jack set off the centre line. Start the drill with the mat on the “T”. Draw two bowls to the first jack (online) and then two to the second jack (offline). To perform the drill play 10 ends on forehand and 10 ends on backhand, varying the length between short and long ends. To make things easier when starting off, set your target area at one and a half or even two mat lengths from the jack. Once your scores improve and you become more consistent, reduce your target down to a mat length. Give yourself a point for every target achieved.Record your score on each end and once completed total forehand and backhand score to give overall score. Compare both hands score for jack

online and jack offline as well as end length. The next training session do the drill again and compare to previous score. The more times you complete the drill a benchmark (average) score can be obtained and this score is the one to beat each time performing the drill. Doing the drill will help with your ability to adjust to a match situation where the jack moves offline. Most importantly set yourself a goal to improve your score at each training session.

Bill Cornehls

Let’s hope Billy’s last tip helped you be a winner on the green! Although there is no guarantee of success, with Billy in your corner you’re on your way to the top. Here’s tip two.Throughout a game there are many situations where the jack is off the centre line. The ability to draw to a jack off line is a critical skill to acquire and master, regardless of what position you play in a team. Continual practice of this skill will provide you with the ability and the confidence to draw to any jack throughout a game situation.

Who Wears The Pants Now?

When considering the

options for their new men’s uniform, the Modbury Bowling Club sought something a little different; a uniform that would make them stand out. Their choice – sublimated blue pants by Sports Centre – initially surprised a few, but has now been heartily endorsed by everyone at the club.Designed by the Modbury Bowling Club to match their playing tops and produced by Sports Centre, these 100% South Australian made pants have been adopted across the club, which means that men of all grades will be wearing them. “We are extremely pleased with our new pants,” said John Morris,

Committee Member of the Modbury Bowling Club. “They’re striking, instantly recognisable as being ‘Modbury’, and most importantly they’re exceptionally high quality. We hope that our players, comfortable in and proud of their new uniforms, might just find that little bit extra on the greens!”“We’d like to thank Sports Centre for their work in our new uniform process – from consultation and design through to product sampling and manufacture, they were superb.”

New lawn bowling facilities in Lifestyle SA retirement villages across Adelaide have been accredited by Bowls SA and could one day host pennant matches.Recent inspections by association staff deemed bowling greens and clubhouses at seven “Lifestyle Villages” were suitable for pennant play, however no match dates have been scheduled at this stage. A major sponsor of Bowls SA, Lifestyle SA is the state’s leading provider of modern retirement villages with nine locations across Adelaide and another three in the planning stages.Significantly, the accreditation of Lifestyle SA’s artificial greens – each comprising four rinks – and associated clubhouse facilities also paves the way for new Lifestyle SA teams to potentially enter pennant competitions in coming seasons.Lifestyle SA Development Director Stephen Norris applauded the endorsement of village greens by the sport’s governing body.“We are delighted that our bowling facilities have been given the tick of approval by Bowls SA and would certainly relish the opportunity to host pennant matches in the future,” he said.

“Every Lifestyle SA village features high quality lawn bowling facilities for residents and we would obviously welcome all other bowlers to drop by and inspect our first-class greens for themselves.”Lifestyle SA’s accredited bowling facilities include The Ferns at Salisbury, The Vines at Evanston Park, The Gardens at Parafield Gardens, The Elms at Walkley Heights, The Parks at Pasadena, Forest Place at Happy Valley and The Sands at Seaford.

Regional Round-Up

Region 1RSL OpeningThe official opening of the Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowling Club 2009-10 season attracted a large contingent of officials, invited guests and members. President Liz Schroder thanked the City Council and RSL Community Club for the generous support they provided towards the installation of the synthetic greens, and appreciation was also directed to former member Noel Jackson who had devoted many hours to the concept and feasibility of the project. The need to upgrade was seen as imperative in attracting new members to the club and the sport and favourable comments on the new surroundings highlights that the changes have been welcomed by the community.City Councillor Merv White paid tribute to the Club’s transition into synthetic greens and guests and members comments show they are anticipating a bright future for the club, and Mayor Steve Perryman spoke of the friendly rivalry that exists between the local clubs with their contrasting surfaces.

Life MembershipOctober 2008 marked 50 years of active membership of the Kingston Bowling Club for Cliff Starling. At Kingston’s Life Members’ Annual Invitation Tournament in February 2009 Cliff was presented with a Bowls SA 50 Years Continuous Club Service Award by Region Councillor Beverlee Scown.Cliff’s extensive service to bowls and

playing record were acknowledged and included RSABA Country Councillor, Lower South East Bowling Association Delegate and Selector and Club President and Selector. His playing achievements include Country Round Robin, Haese Shield, Country Carnival Fours, State Fours, Pairs and Singles and Association and Club Championships - winning some more than once.Cliff is a Life Member of Kingston S.E. Club, a National Umpire and a Super Veteran.

Region 290 Years youngEthel Axford played her first pennant match for Bute in 1961, later transferring to Kadina when she and her husband Jack retired. Ethel is a valued player at Kadina, having been their Women’s Champion twice, Pairs Champion seven times, winner of the Yorke Peninsula Association Fours, Triples and Pairs and still happy to be playing each week. To recognise her 90th birthday she was presented with a Bowls SA Certificate by Region 2 Councillor Val Vawser.

Life Membership Recently Bowls SA Vice President Kenn Rogers presented Curramulka member Frank Thompson with Life Membership. Frank, affectionately known as ‘Whiskers’, has been a quiet achiever over many years and has been instrumental in setting up the garden surrounding the club as well as being Secretary/Treasurer for a number of years. Barbeques on Thursday nights are one of Frank’s specialities and the large attendance is testament to his cooking skills. Frank has also been a hard worker around the green and late last year he decided to assist with preparation taking on the job of rolling the green; a relatively easy job or so Frank thought. He found however that riding a Bucking Bronco

would have been easier and felt slightly humiliated when the women waiting to play pennants witnessed his efforts. Congratulations Frank.

Region 4Kapunda The Kapunda Bowling Club continues to be very active in encouraging new members and players and currently fields both women’s and men’s midweek pennants, along with a Division 1 and 2 and two Division 3 teams each Saturday. Plans are underway for celebrations to mark 100 years of bowling and a special event has been arranged to celebrate the centenary with an Invitation Mixed Fours tournament on Sunday 17 January 2010. The club plans to display memorabilia, photos and have special centenary souvenirs available for purchase. A light luncheon will also be available for players and non players and with a limited number of rinks the day is expected to fill quickly so bookings are essential through the Centenary Committee. As some of the older records are no longer available, the Club is keen to contact and include as many ex Kapunda Bowling Club members or friends as possible, so please contact Christine Reardon C/- Centenary Committee, PO Box 234, Kapunda, SA 5373 or phone 08 8566 2772 if you would like tobe included.

Region 6Hill’s Women 50 The Hills Women’s Bowling Association celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala opening day held at the Mt Barker Bowling Club on Tuesday 29 September. President Kaye Elsworthy, in welcoming guests and current players to celebrate the golden milestone and opening of the 2009/10 season, provided a brief history of the Association which was formed with six clubs in August 1959.About 130 people attended the event with many past players wearing their

older style uniforms dating back to the early days. During the day, amidst much laughter, random measures of the frocks took place to ensure they were the required length. Several ladies have played for the entire 50 years including HWBA Life Members and Patrons Betty Fechner (Lobethal) and Helen Duke (Mt Barker) who cut the special birthday cake.Special guest at the function was Bowls SA President, Ivy Kluske, who opened the season and in her address encouraged the Association to welcome younger players to participate in some form of bowling as the area grows, thus preparing a future for those coming after us.A display of the Association’s history included old minute books and records, dating back to first secretary Min Burnley’s beautifully handwritten records, and player profiles of those who have made outstanding contributions to the Association since 1959.With each club in the Association contributing press clippings and a visual and photographic display of their club’s history the day was a wonderful way to meet up with old friends and reminisce about days gone by.

Region 7Yankalilla 80th BirthdayA game of bowls followed by high tea was the format for the Yankalilla Bowling Club’s 80th Birthday celebrations on 20 September 2009.Short stories on bygone days by Life Members, presentation of Life Membership to Daphne MacLean for her outstanding services to the club and a Super Veteran badge to Peg Slavin were highlights of the day.

Region 8Saddleworth OpeningPresident John De Vries welcomed over 80 past and present members when extensions to the Saddleworth Bowling Club were opened on 20 September. After many years of applying for grants, and setbacks, the club finally realised their dream of adding a kitchen and toilets to their existing clubroom when they obtained grants from the Office for Recreation and Sport and the Clare & Gilbert Valley Council. Members also supported the project with donations and debentures, and a loan was made available by the Clare & Gilbert Valley Council.Stan Rowett, Life Member and the oldest playing member of the club, opened the extensions and reminisced about the many events that had taken place over the years, especially the relocatingof the bowling greens and the facilities that were built. Liz Calvert spoke on behalf of the Clare & Gilbert Council and Brenton Schoenberg presented a detailed report of the building project.Special guests were Region 8 Councillor Maxine Baldock, Region Mid North Men’s Bowling Association Secretary Jill Ackland and Barbara Smith Northern Light Women’s Bowling Association Secretary.A special presentation was made by Councillor Maxine when Connie Haydon, Janet Heinrich and Alison Palmer were presented with Life Membership after nearly 40 years of service to the club.

Region 11Brighton Innovative SinglesNathan Pederson (14 years) and Bradley Klose (18 years) demonstrated their class at the recent Brighton Bowling Club’s Innovative Singles. The competition attracting 34 players from 15 clubs and Nathan and Bradley fought it out to the final two. The boys played brilliantly, each winning a set and then played a thrilling three end tiebreaker. Well done boys!Brighton’s coach, Noel Bromilow, said “It was as good as any game of bowls I have ever seen at Brighton.”

Next GenerationLucien Haines showed that age is no limit when he became the first junior member at Brighton Bowling Club for many years. As the state under 11 champion last year, he is also our first State champion for 30 years.

Lucien played his first pennant game on 17 October and after the game decided that he would make himself available every week. His rink won and he was helped by the other members of his team, one of whom was 79 years older than him! Lucien has known both Nathan and Bradley for some time as they have all been involved in Bowls SA program for juniors. After all Brighton’s club motto says ‘Bowls is truly the game for all ages!

Region 12Pink Day @ HoldfastPink was the colour of the day when a highly successful Breast Cancer Charity Day was held at the Holdfast Bay Bowls & Croquet Club on 18 October 2009. Social and new bowlers, as well as Croquet players were invited to participate and laughter could be heard across the greens. The Club will be holding more Charity Days in the future, with the next one programmed for February in aid of the Guide Dogs Association.

Copenhagen – What does it all mean?By the time this goes to print our government will be making submissions in a conference in Copenhagen about climate change. The conference may have significant effect of our future lives and including that of our children. The media reporting of the issue coincides with a recent experience I had with climate change and emission trading schemes. This was to be my first brush with the future in this area. Not being involved in an industry which produces or burns coals or manufactures many products, I was taken by surprise when an advisory business contacted our law firm to discuss how an emissions trading scheme is going to affect our ability to operate as a law firm in the coming years. It is not a matter to which I had turned my mind. I wondered how a law firm could fit into any Emissions Trading Scheme. I should have realised that given that some law firms are now setting up whole climate change advisory sections, this is an area which is happening now.It is an issue which will have a significant impact upon the way we live and work and will continue to be a dominant article in media events, particularly in light of the recent activity in the Parliamentary debates on the issue and in Copenhagen.Significant debate in Australia has already occurred, and in other parts of the world too regarding the existence of and the best way to alleviate the problem of greenhouse gases driven by climate change. Several options have been put forward, ranging from doing very little at all through to various types of markets in greenhouse gasses and taxes on emissions. The Rudd Government has decided that the best option is:1. To put in place a cap and trade market for carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses. 2. The government hopes this will be described at the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme or CPRS. A bill seeking to enact such a scheme was defeated in the Senate in August.

3. If the bill that was defeated was to be reintroduced without amendment and again rejected, then it could trigger a double dissolution and until after Copenhagen things remain a little uncertain. For the moment, however, the defeated bill probably provides the best illustration of what will eventually become law in Australia. So, what will it look like? The SchemeA cap and trade market, as the name suggests, comes about in two stages. 1. First the Government will set the “cap”. This is, broadly speaking; the total amount of emissions that the Government thinks should be allowed in the current year. This will be determined by taking into account the environmental effects of different amounts of emissions and also the economic effects of restricting emissions. Once this cap has been set the trading bit can begin.2. What exactly is being traded? The way the system will work is that, at the end of each financial year, all big emitters of carbon greenhouse gasses will have to report to the government how much they have emitted for the year. Once they have done this they will have to surrender a permit for every tonne of carbon dioxide emitted (or equivalent of other greenhouse gasses) to the government. It is these permits that will be traded.3. The government will issue the same number of permits as its cap, thus, the economy as a whole is not allowed to emit more than the cap, but no individual company is forced to reduce or prevented from increasing its emissions provided that it is willing and able to purchase sufficient permits from other traders.4. In the first year the scheme will not be a true cap and trade market. The defeated Bill proposed to alleviate business concerns with a price of $10 being imposed on all permits. Thus, a company may purchase as many permits as it needs for $10 per permit. Subsequent to this, however, the government will auction off the capped number of permits throughout a financial year. Say, for example, the cap is to be 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide or equivalent, and then the government will auction 100 million permits. Once the permits are in the market they may be traded freely, just like shares on a stock exchange.

How will it affect most of us?The scheme will affect most of us only indirectly. It may cause the price of goods and services that have been produced in such a way as to cause emissions, to increase. The price of goods and services that are responsible for more emissions will become more expensive relative to goods and services that cause fewer emissions. This is how the scheme encourages manufacturers to adopt low emissions technology. As a consumer the government hopes that you will buy goods and services that have been produced in a non emissions intensive way over those that have not. If the products are otherwise equal, the non emissions intensive products will be cheaper.ConclusionThe Emissions Trading Scheme in greenhouse gasses will become commonplace eventually. Just like the GST has since 2000, the Emissions Trading Scheme will be something that impacts on our life. Law firms are gearing up to be advisors to business as to no doubt how to comply and cope with changes to the law, particularly for those directly involved in the production of greenhouse gases. It will be the hip pocket nerve which reacts and which is being used as the catalyst for change in a way in which the community conducts itself as Governments both here and throughout the world consider carbon pollution reduction schemes. It would pay to be alert to what it may all mean in respect of our daily lives. The days of ensuring that power is not wasted by turning off the lights are passing. Keep an eye on Copenhagen if it interests you. Yet another matter for you to ponder when you are out there on the green bowling to your heart’s content.

Mark Jappe, a solicitor at Johnston Withers, had a significant input into the production of this article.

Community centres proving popular in modern day retirement villages

T.he fantastic new retirement villages being built today are defi nitely a far cry from the staid old homes our mums and dads

may have encountered 20 or 30 years ago.Spacious modern villages are being

specifi cally developed to cater for the next generation of “baby boomer” retirees, with some perhaps better described as hotel resorts given their vast array of facilities and services for residents.

Signifi cantly, these new villages are placing a much greater emphasis on lifestyle. Not only are elaborate leisure and recreation facilities encouraging retirees to stay fi t and healthy, they’re also encouraging greater social interaction between neighbours and friends.

For Lifestyle SA villages across Adelaide, a purpose-built “community centre” in each village serves as the focal point for residents and helps facilitate these active and social lifestyles.

Community centres include indoor swimming pools, hydrotherapy spas, billiards rooms and gymnasiums, not to mention function areas and lounges for

residents to catch up over a cuppa. Not surprisingly, these community

centres are proving a major drawcard for retirees who relish the neighbourly atmosphere they foster and the social activities they offer.

There are now thousands of South Australians living in Lifestyle SA villages throughout the state who are taking advantage of these wonderful community centres and enjoying life to the full.

If you’re interested in joining them, why not give the friendly folk at Lifestyle SA a call or drop into the company’s new head offi ce and display centre at 91 King William Road, Unley.

Past Presidents played their Annual Men v Women’s game recently at Prospect-Broadview for the Atwell Trophy.

The trophy was presented by Peggy Atwell in honour of her late husband

Bill. Prior to the game, Metropolitan member Des Smart, captain of the men’s side and State President Barbara Ledner, captain of the women gave inspiring addresses to their sides which set the stage for an exciting encounter. After the first game the men held a narrow lead of 11 shots but following a great lunch during which the men in particular imbibed some performance enhancing liquid the men raced away in the second half for a convincing win 241 shots to 190. Unfortunately Peggy was unable to attend to present the trophy but Captain Barbara was gracious in handing the trophy to Captain Des who was humble in victory. Best teams for the ladies were the team of Gay Powell, Mary McCouaig and Mary O’Neil and

the team of Irene Allen, Dot Spencer and June Peglar. For the men, Trevor Reed, Max Medwell and Ian Cox played well together with the team of Mike Powell, Bill Dunn and Howard Herde. With 60 bowlers participating it was a great day and thanks must go to President Danny Boon and Margaret Clarke of Prospect-Broadview for their great hospitality.

Future highlights of our programme are the Annual Christmas Lunch and the current Club Presidents Invitation Day. The Christmas lunch will be held at Club Marion (behind the Marion Bowling Club) on Sunday 6 December. It will be a great time with fine food, Christmas Carols and a visit from Father Christmas. Apart from members with friends we would be delighted to welcome non-member Past Presidents with partners and friends.
