Post Harvest Management:

BANANA RIPENING CHAMBER

In Krishna district during 2009-10, two of the farmers viz, Md.Rasheed

and Sk.Moosa have established Banana ripening chamber under Rashtriya

Krishi Vikas Yojana program.

PUF panelling free on refrigeration, ethylene gas injectors are

arranged aptly enable about 40 tons of product ripened at a time. Under this

system, continuous flow of fresh air and ethylene gas will be provided into

ripening chamber in correct proportions to form a fruit ripening gas mixture

that ripens fruit in very short period of time and also improves the quality of

the fruit.

These two farming entrepreneurs have 10-15 Yrs of experience in

marketing of banana and Mango. With the advent of ripening chambers, they

decided to improve their business with a holistic and hygienic approach. They

have arranged for backward and forward linkages with farmers and traders

respectively and projected their report to bank. Their attempt was appreciated

by wholesalers and orders were increased quality and uniformity of fruits.

For a successful and continuous run of the unit, they are also planning

for ripening of mango during the current season. Their credibility with bankers,

farmers and exporters formed way for continues supply of product.

Their success will surely pave way for many more such progressive

farming entrepreneurs to come forward and to focus on creation of Post

Organic Farming

Vermicompost Units:

Name of the Farmer : P.Naidu

Village : Andalapalli

Mandal : Atchuthapuram

The farmer is cultivating coconut, mango, vegetables in 3 hectares.

The farmer used to apply in organic fertilizers and FYM to his crops due to

which his soil condition has degraded and pest incidence was more in the

crops like Papaya, vegetables etc. Department has taken the farmer to NIRD,

Hyderabad through exposure visit to impart new technology adopted in

process of vermicomposting. After seeing the procedure, he has constructed

the vermicompost unit in 600 cu ft along with vermin wash section with the

assistance of RKVY. Now he is producing 3 tonnes of vermin compost in an

interval of 2 months. With the usage of vermicompost to his field a lot of

difference was observed in terms of quality, yield etc. The yield of coconut

increased to 75 nuts/ tree in a span of 6 months and 8 tons in case of Mango

and 90 tons per hectare in Papaya. The population of sucking pests was also

minimized due to the usage of vermi wash in case of papaya and vegetables.

The farmer apart from applying the vermicompost to his crops is also getting

additional income of Rs 4000/- per month by selling extra produce and worms

to other farmers.

Intuitional trainings and 17 exposure visits to the farmers. The farmers

have well utilized and implementing the advance practices in which

they have imparted training and exposed in field visits. The success of

these training will surely pave way for many more such farmers to

come forward and to focus on creation of high production and

productivity while availing the assistance being provided by the

government under RKVY.
