Notes on reading in the History of Political Thought (1 items)

While lectures will be a guide to the themes in the set texts, they will not provide asubstitute for reading them.  Students will derive the greatest benefit from the lectures ifthey have begun the prescribed reading.  Your Tutors will specify what sections of thetexts to prepare for tutorial discussions.

As you will see from the following detailed bibliography, there is an immense amount ofmaterial available – both material directed towards our set texts and their particularcontexts and issues, and those which address or are produced by the wider world in whichour theorists are located.  Some of this material will be referred to in lectures; some ismatter for further reading on your part, as time and will allow. Each section includesmaterial that will introduce you to the main thinkers concerned, their ideas, and thehistorical and intellectual context in which they wrote. This material is there to supportyour reading and preparation for the essays and exam.

One thing to bear in mind is that these are historical texts. While we have taken care todirect you to the best modern editions of these books, they were written over a longhistorical period. You may find the language and style difficult to approach at first, butpersevere. The ideas in these texts are generally clear and the lectures will help toorientate you within the texts. It's also worth noting that these texts are the product ofvery different historical periods from our own. You shouldn't expect these thinkers to shareall of our current beliefs about politics and society. Indeed part of the aim of this course isto show you how our current beliefs about politics have been shaped by a long series ofphilosophical debates.

Detailed Bibliography (18 items)You are expected to become familiar with the set texts. Other material is suggested and/or
