GRADUATION SERVICE REQUIREMENT

Successful completion of the graduation service requirement is necessary for graduation from Peoria Christian School. These procedures will be followed:

1. A student’s diploma is withheld until successful completion of the graduation

service requirement has been verified by the high school guidance counselors.

2. No graduation date will be placed on the student’s transcript until successful completion of the graduation service requirement has been verified.

3. No final and official student transcript will be released until successful completion of the graduation service requirement has been verified.

4. Once the graduation service requirement has been successfully completed, the

student’s diploma and final and official transcript may be released. The graduation date will be the same as the actual graduation ceremony for that class.

5. Students who have not successfully completed the graduation service requirement by the graduation ceremony may participate in the ceremony only if the student, the parent(s), project supervisor(s), a guidance counselor, and the high school

principal have all signed a contract detailing the completion of the requirement prior to a date assigned by the high school principal.

6. If the contract for completion is not complete by the assigned date, the points in 1,2,3, and 4 will apply.

2

REASONS FOR THE GRADUATION SERVICE REQUIREMENT

Peoria Christian School desires to reach beyond academic excellence to develop Christlikeness (Mark 10:45; Luke 22:27). We recognize that holiness does not thrive in

isolation. We need the environment of a body of believers bounded by love and servanthood to enhance our ability to follow Christ. We know that in Christ, all our deepest needs are fully satisfied. This is a liberating truth, and the more we embrace it,

the more we escape the natural bondage to selfish pursuits. As a Christ-centered community, we strive to reflect Christ in how we relate to others. Believers who grow in

this understanding become less inclined to exploit and manipulate relationships in order to authenticate their security and significance. We do not need to compare, dominate, and compete with others because of our timeless and unwavering relationship with the

living God.

Our graduation service requirement is a means to bridge the gap between theology as an academic discipline and the essence of Christian responsibility as a guide for everyday living. It provides the opportunity to put theology into action. Students are expected to

participate in service activities and reflection as a continual part of their education at Peoria Christian School, beginning with their freshmen year, and continuing into their

senior year. Hopefully service will become an important part of their adult lives. Those with a servant’s heart and eyes will find themselves compelled by love to serve in ways and times beyond the bounds of our graduation service requirement.

Serving is a spiritual discipline. In the discipline of service, the issue is not always how

well you serve, for even the world serves well when it leads to profit. As Christians, we understand that service is a means to train ourselves away from arrogance, possessiveness, envy, resentment, and covetousness. It allows us the freedom of humility

that carries no burdens of appearance. Those who want to train themselves for Christ-like spirituality will find it one of the surest and most practical means of growth. The

Christian serves with humility because it leads to Christlikeness. Disciplined service to God is work, hard and costly labor sometimes, but it will endure for eternity.

There is no such thing as spiritual employment or spiritual retirement in the Kingdom of God. We learn from Christ’s example (John 13:12-16). As believers, we are expected to

serve, and gifted to serve (Romans 12:7; Psalm 100:2; Hebrews 9:14), and we are motivated by love (Galatians 5:13 II; Corinthians 5:14-15). There is no better fuel for service that burns longer and provides more energy than love. The more we love God the

more we will live for Him and serve Him, and the more we love others the more we will serve them (Hebrews 6:10; Matthew 25:40; Galatians 6:10).

3

GRADUATION SERVICE REQUIREMENTS GUIDELINES

1. Students are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of service prior to graduation. Transfer students, after consultation with one of our guidance

counselors, will have the number of required hours reduced. 2. Students are to complete 10 hours per year. While we encourage students to

engage in as many hours of service as possible, we will only log 10 hours of

service each year towards the total hours needed for graduation. 3. Service projects can be completed during the school year and during the summer.

Up to 4 hours can be accumulated each year during the summer. 4. All service projects must be registered by the student and approved by a guidance

counselor before the project begins. No project will receive credit unless this

guideline has been followed. 5. Senior projects end on May 1. Other grade level projects must end on May 31 of

each academic year. 6. All completed projects must be evaluated by the project supervisor and student on

the appropriate green evaluation form.

7. Students may not receive compensation for service projects. This includes money, gifts, or any other compensation.

8. Students may not schedule off campus service projects during school hours. 9. Arrangements for ongoing service projects can be made with the guidance

counselors. This will allow for more spontaneous service opportunities.

10. Generally, service projects are not completed for family members. We ask students to broaden their sphere of influence to include those outside of friends

and family. 11. Generally, a project supervisor should not be a family member of the student

involved in the project. A project supervisor should be a responsible adult

capable of adequately supervising a minor. 12. Parents should be involved in selecting a suitable project and should monitor the

project to ensure that the student is well supervised. 13. Students should arrange their service projects on their own by contacting the

organization/agency directly. Our guidance staff will maintain accurate records

on each student’s status for meeting the graduation service requirement. They will assist students by promoting and advertising service opportunities, and will

act as a resource person for students and parents requesting information about the graduation service requirements.

14. Even though supervisors are responsible for keeping an accurate record of student

service hours to report to our guidance staff on the verification form, it is suggested that the student also keep a log of hours served.

15. Whenever a student, parent, or supervisor becomes aware of inappropriate behavior at a project site, the guidance staff should be contacted immediately so that appropriate action may be undertaken. Examples would include sexual

harassment, immoral or illegal activity, and a lack of proper supervision.

GRADUATION SERVICE REQUIREMENT CATEGORIES

The graduation service requirement allows for projects in the following areas: SERVICE TO THE CHURCH

Students are encouraged to become involved in projects within their church. Opportunities will vary from church to church depending on size, church needs, and

location. Some general ideas include children’s ministry, nursing home ministries, after-care programs, and food pantry programs.

1. Contact your pastor, pastoral associate, or church staff member for specific opportunities.

2. Students may be involved in projects in other churches, but should first exhaust the opportunities available within their own church.

SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY Students may be involved in a variety of greater Peoria area opportunities. A general

guideline for agencies and organizations are those assisting the elderly, the poor, the handicapped, the illiterate, and the ill. Projects outside the Peoria area are acceptable but students should speak to a guidance counselor about such a project in advance.

SERVICE TO THE SCHOOL

Students may be involved in specific activities at Peoria Christian School. Programmed service opportunities at PCS (Example: Missions trips, Leaf Raking, Servathon, Key Club, Student Outreach, Student Council, National Honor Society), will not be included

in meeting the graduation service requirement.

DESCRIPTION OF GRADUATION SERVICE REQUIREMENT FORMS

All forms described are available from our guidance counselors and also are available at the high school office. All completed forms should be returned to the high school office. Samples of these forms can be found at the end of this handbook.

REGISTRATION FORM (yellow during school year, orange for summer, purple for DSD) Before a project is started, this form is completed and submitted for approval. This form requires the signature of student, parent/guardian, and supervisor. It should be completed thoroughly and completely. This form includes a liability disclaimer. Once a registration form has been submitted, a reply will be received within 3 days that will indicate if the project has been approved. Once approval is given, the project may be started.

VERIFICATION FORM (Green) The supervisor of a project is asked to evaluate student performance and to record the actual number of hours the student served. Once your project is complete, the front of the form is to be complete by the project supervisor. The student should return it to the high school office after the student has completed the back of the form. Please be sure all signatures are on the form. (The project supervisor’s signature on front and student and parent signature on back of form.) Student and supervisor should periodically check to insure that both agree on the hours of service.

6
