CONSOLIS has launched several energy-saving initia-tives on its manufacturing sites. The Group's Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) site at Lunel, in the south of France has been equipped with photovoltaic solar panels on the roof since 2012, giving rise to an annual production of 260 MW of energy (equivalent to the yearly consumption of electricity of 104 households) and a reduction of 23 tonnes of CO2.

CONSOLIS is constantly seeking to enhance the strength, ductility and environmental sustainability of its concrete solutions - our R&D programmes are intrinsically linked to our sustainability initiatives.

CONSOLIS dedicates a lot of research into enhancing the thermal mass and acoustic performance of con-crete. CONSOLIS's Building activity teams collaborate on multiple projects involving BREEAM rating or LEED accreditation such as the Pyramid project in Sweden, a modern office complex for which Strangbetong, CONSOLIS' Swedish subsidiary has been commissioned to design, manufacture and assembly the concrete framework. With a reduced impact on the environment during the construction phase and operating as an envi-ronmentally sensitive building during its lifetime with a high environmental profile, the Pyramid offices will hold the second highest BREEAM ranking - Excellent.

Thanks to its experience and technical mastery of concrete and its different properties, CONSOLIS is able to develop materials and products that are adapted to specific structural and architectural constraints. Selecting the right concrete for the right structure leads to greater efficiency in construction, energy use and cost. Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) and Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) are two examples of high-performance materials CONSOLIS

CONSOLIS R&D teams are currently studying various forms of nano technologies to assess their capacity for absorbing mono-nitrogen oxides from the atmosphere. This research is a closer step towards the integration of these specific technologies into concrete products used in infrastructure and building construction, to absorb atmospheric pollution.

Our teams take their research closer to our markets by developing solutions in partnership with customers in the countries where we operate. Our production site labs go far beyond routine quality control: they provide expertise in developing complex engineered concrete products. Moreover, they can complete prototyping case studies based on the appropriate qualification tests on request. Our technical expertise is crucial to the success of technically complex and ambitious projects.

The longitudinal voids in our prestressed hol-lowcore slabs mean that 50% less concrete is needed to manufacture these types of slab, compared to a traditional one. In addition, the low weight of a hollowcore floor enables us to reduce the amount of pre-stressing steel used by 30%. Less concrete means less CO2 emissions and a leaner design.

Using precast concrete already helps to reduce energy and raw material consumption during construction, but the key to making concrete a greener material is reducing the CO2 emissions generated to produce it. CONSOLIS does this by using local and recycled aggre-gates, which lowers both emissions related to the trans-port of materials and the manufacture of the concrete

itself. Where possible, Consolis' subsidiaries use the most environmentally-friendly transportation method including road, rail and waterways. In our production processes a maximum proportion of waste is recovered and re-used, which applies to fresh concrete residue as well as hardened concrete.

High Performance with Less Concrete

makes wide use of. Both materials are lighter and stronger than traditional concrete, offering greater flexibility in construction. Bonna Sabla, a CONSOLIS subsidiary, took advantage of UHPFRC’s unique properties when commissioned to produce products such as voussoirs, cantilever beams and latticework panels for Marseille’s striking and flamboyant MuCEM museum.

SMART CONCRETEFor certain solutions, Consolis' uses smart concrete, where the material itself contains micro¬chips that allow it to communicate a wide range of information once installed. The chips can provide data such as the composition of the material used, date and time of a specifi c manufacturing process and quality checks, installation procedures, reference numbers for wear parts such as joints and seals, and data on pre-installation quality checks. The data is available for the lifecycle of the product whether it be a bridge, tunnel or building, and is useful in the case of renovation, destruction or concrete recycling.

Innovation at CONSOLIS is fi rmly grounded in its long tradition of research, which stretches back a century. Today's multi-level R&D programme is based on a model of open innovation, a concept whereby both internal and external ideas as well as paths to market are explored to ensure the advance of technology and innovation in the industry.

Our R&D team comprises architects, engineers, industrial designers and multidisciplinary researchers from fi ve different countries. Not only do we work to continually develop innovative materials and construction elements, but we also focus our efforts on project management, process improvement and collaborative partnerships with key industry bodies.

researCh anD innovation is in our Dna

As Consolis is convinced that the future of construction will involve digital technology on all levels, from design to materials used and processes, the Group has specifi c R&D programmes on digital technology. Consolis is thus able to: • Address the increasing demand for sophisticated designs• Set world-class standards for manufacturing operations and tighten dimension tolerances• Contribute to improving on-site work with less manual intervention• Develop digital features, connected objects and structural monitoring to better manage product lifecycle.

CONSOLIS

CONSOLIS has been using BIM (Building Information Modelling) and VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) since 2006. These leading technologies help us review and refi ne constructability issues early on in the design process. In addition to providing a clear vision of a building's behaviour for operation and maintenance plans, BIM and VDC are also key for sustainable design,

offering feedback on environmental characteristics such as material properties, energy per formance and site disturbance. Following on from our current use of BIM 4D on many projects, our objective is to use BIM 5D for 50% of our projects by 2018, offering optimized design, planning and construction costs and calculation of the Total Cost of Ownership for our clients.

For certain solutions, Consolis' uses smart concrete, where the material itself contains micro¬chips that allow it to communicate a wide range of information once installed. Gateway to CreativityUltra-High Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete

The breathtaking concrete latticework created for the MuCEM (Marseilles, France) and the Jean Bouin Stadium (Paris, France) demonstrate UHPFRC's adaptability and strength. This exceptionally strong material was used for the construction of several nine-meter high “N” and “Y” shaped supporting columns, as well as a 78-meter footbridge for the MuCEM. The building also has canopies, awnings and other architectural features requiring strong and accurate elements.

Today's construction industry requires innovative materials that are strong, fl exible and cost-effective.CONSOLIS precast solutions, such as hollowcore slabs and ready-made sandwich walls, speed up construction and ensure quality results. Pipe floors, integrated hollowcore slabs and walls allow space for pipes and conduits for increased building fl exibility and adaptability.

CONSOLIS's precast and prestressed concrete is widely used in low-, mid- and high-rise apartment buildings.  Our prefabricated elements, such as hollowcore slabs and ready-made sandwich walls, allow a signifi cant decrease in construction time. Developers and owners know that these two precast elements are a winning combination for fi nishing projects fast while respecting quality, and generating income earlier with a reduction in overall cost. CONSOLIS’ prestressed hollowcore fl oors provide maximum fl exibility because unit depth, capacity and surface fi nish are adapted to each and every project.

The benefits of using TermoDeck® hollowcore slabs in residential construction are low operating and mainte-nance costs, and outstanding thermal comfort. The building consumes very little energy thanks to effi cient insulation, and low infi ltration rates through a heating, ventilation and cooling system integrated into the concrete fl ooring. Air passes through the TermoDeck® system, which allows the room temperature in each apartment to be maintained between 20°C and 23°C. Air can be heated by a geothermal heat pump and additional heating methods can be used as back up during cold periods.

Market-leading Expertise in Railway TracksWith a strong presence in Europe and more than 80 years' experience, CONSOLIS’ expertise in manufacturing concrete sleepers and bearers is unmatched in the European market. We serve all markets segments, with ballasted or ballast-less solutions – high-speed rail, main lines, urban networks and heavy haul – and are able to work with all types of fastenings, gauges, and existing standards.

Lifecycle costs are always on our mind, from the start of the design phase right through to RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) analysis.

EASIER MAINTENANCE • The rail/sleeper interface is the same on slab-track and on ballast sleepers, therefore

rails and fasteners can be replaced easily. • The design of our slab track system enables easy replacement of the sleepers. • Our Harmelen level crossing solution eliminates the maintenance that is required in

traditional level crossing systems.

LONGER PRODUCT LIFECYCLE In minimizing the friction between ballast and sleepers, our under sleeper pad solutions help in reducing maintenance needs from 20 to 30%.

Lowering Costs for Railway Operators

Thanks to our broad experience, we are able to rapidly develop solutions that fit our customers' requirements perfectly. Our expertise enables us to anticipate market needs and offer innovative adapted solutions.
