As we reflect on our mothers and nurses, it’s impossible to miss the many common characteristics that they share. Good mothers and nurses are compassionate. In their compassion they show sympathy and a strong desire to alleviate suffering. All good mothers and nurses will be challenged at times even when they know that the care or medicine they are recommending is in our best interest. With compassion they “nudge” us in the right direction and make sure we receive the care we need. Good mothers and nurses are selfless. Whether it’s staying up in the middle of the night to soothe or reassure or working tirelessly until we are safely resting, they put our needs ahead of their own. Important to Keep inMind DuringSummer Time

Summer time is a season of theyear where you can have lots offun doing outdoor activities. Sunexposure is important for humanbeings. Vitamin D is produced inthe skin when it is exposed toultraviolet B radiation andvitamin D places a key role in theabsorption of calcium.

Even though sun is good in ourlives, it is important to followsome precautions to protect ourskin and eyes.

Sun protection is the mostimportant so you don’t get asunburn. People with fairer skin, lighter hair, and lighter eyes oftenneed stronger sun block than theirdarker counterparts. Everyoneshould wear a sunscreen with SPFof 15 or higher with abroad-spectrum agent (protectsagainst UVA and UVB). Somemoisturizers have an SPF, but notall. Check the label.

People tend to under-applysunscreen. Put on enough to coveryour entire body, no matter howmuch time it takes and don’tforget your scars. You can’tskimp!!! Sunscreen takes 15 to 20minutes to kick into high gear, soapply it before you leave thehouse. Re-apply frequently, especially after swimming.

Sun exposure has been linked

to cataract formation and maypossibly cause maculardegeneration.

To protect the eyes fromharmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, youneed to make sure your regularglasses and sunglasses have 100%UV protection. This is completelyseparate from any tint. The fact isyou can have clear lenses with UVcoating that will protect you fromthe harmful rays of the sun.UV protective glasses do morethan protect against cataracts andother eye diseases. UV rays canalso cause growths on the eye’ssurface that are called apterygial. This sun damage, which canappear as yellow bumps on theeye’s surface, can decrease visionand require surgery.

UV 400 reduces the exposure ofthe eye, the surface of the eye, thelens, and the retina from UV light. If you buy over-the-countersunglasses, look for the words“UV absorbing.”

Also, don’t forget to drinkenough water. Hydration is veryimportant to keep our bodieshealthy. There is a fine linebetween how heat affects mostadults and how it can affect theelderly in a more profound way. Itis extremely important for seniorcitizens to practice a gradualacclimatization to heat that putsemphasis on hydration.

Always check with your doctorfor more specific indications tosurvive through this summer!!!!
