Introduction to NFC

What is Near Field Communication (NFC)?

A wireless technology that has a range of only a few inches.

It is based on the magnetic field induction between readers andtags in a radio frequency identification (RFID) system.

Adhering to the ISO 14443 international standard for smartcards, near field communication (NFC) is compatible with thecountless ID card terminals in use around the world.

NFC is complementary to Bluetooth and 802.11 with their longdistance capabilities

NFC also works in dirty environment

NFC does not require line of sight

Provides communication method to non-self powered devices

Is there a far field communication

Is there a far field communication?

Yes there exist, can be considered the twin of NFC.

The far field region of an electromagnetic field startsapproximately two wavelengths from the antenna and extendsoutward

As the distance increases, the strength of the electromagneticfield decreases equal to the square of the distance the field isfrom the antenna

If the signal is picked up by another antenna this has no effecton the original antenna signal

How the Technology Works

Coil in the first smart phone sets up a current that is picked upa second smart phone or reader.

The second smart phone receives the induced current from thefirst, recognizes it as a valid signal and offers a connection.Thefirst cell accepts the connection and begins the transaction.
