Mill Hill is a popular and desirable place to live and the old village centre, known
as Mill Hill Village, is largely residential with only a few shops. The Ridgeway, an
old medieval route into London, is itself is characterised by many large 17th and
18th Century villas set in extensive grounds. These include the Grade II* Listed
Holcombe House, which adjoins Mill Heights and dates from the 1770s. The wider
area comprises a mixture of interwar housing estates interspersed with much open
green space. It is economically affluent with a higher than average proportion of
largely commuting professional residents.
Mill Hill Village’s modern day retail centre is at Mill Hill Broadway, which bustles with good shops, café, the library and other services. A little further away, Mill Hill East also has a local retail centre and a new Waitrose supermarket on the site of an old gasworks. Larger retail centres can be found at Finchley, Barnet and Edgeware, while Brent Cross Shopping Centre is only five miles away. The village offers good local schools at every level, including state secondary schools such as Mill Hill School and Copthall, as well as a number of independent schools. There are also several quality nurseries providing for pre schoolers.
In terms of public transport, Mill Hill Broadway Station is the closest mainline station, being around half a mile away, and provides a frequent service into London St Pancras/Kings Cross. Mill Hill East and Edgware underground stations are each around one and half miles away and provide a service on the Northern Line. Nearby, there are bus stops for services from Edgware Bus Station to Arnos Grove Station and to Golders Green. The national motorway network is readily accessible from the A1 and M1 (Junction 2), which is approximately two miles away. Heathrow Airport is just 14 miles distant, while Stansted is 28 miles.
