I greet you in Jesus’ Name!

I welcome you all to this 20th B Graduation Ceremony. Today the University is holding its first

second graduation ceremony in the academic year on top of the routine October graduation

ceremony. I am pleased to note that the University has chosen to privilege its graduands who

studied under the rolling semester and therefore completed their studies in December; I am also

informed that some students who may have not made it during the October function for one

reason or the other are graduating today.

Ladies and gentlemen I take this opportunity to welcome our Chief Guest, Dr. Silver Mugisha, the

Managing Director of National Water and Sewerage Corporation.

Chief Guest, I thank you for honoring our invitation; you are warmly welcome to Ndejje University.

Ndejje University was founded in 1992, chartered in 2009 and celebrated its 25 years of existence

in 2017. The University has excelled both academically (through teaching, research, community

engagement, innovation and training) and in other extracurricular activities especially sports.

Ndejje University is a sports powerhouse in Africa and specifically East Africa.

Chief Guest, before you we have a Board of Trustees, a vibrant Council, Management and staff

of Ndejje University; guardians, stakeholders and today’s graduands. The University has been

very active in training and equipping students with skills that enable them to be creative and

self-motivated in the work world. Ndejje University has very many of their alumni not only in the

public sector but predominantly in the private sector.

Today’s graduation’s theme is “Consolidating Collaborations, Innovations and

Internationalization of Higher Education”.

There is great need to consolidate what has been started on in the areas of collaborations,

innovations and internationalization.

I have learnt that Ndejje University has put a lot of efforts in collaboration, innovations and

internationalization. It is evidenced by the several memoranda signed by the University and

other institutions, Non-government organisations, public sector international institutions and

bodies. All this has given the University a mileage and visibility. The staff have won research

grants and published in renowned Journals.

I have also been informed that currently the University is hosting several international staff and

students from Europe conducting research especially in water and renewable energy.

Higher Education has evolved over the years and in the current times very few Universities will

survive and stand on their own without collaborations and internationalization of their education

programmes and academic activities. Quality higher education requires a lot of resources that

can only be sustained through collaborations with both academic and pertinent non-academic

institutions.

Internationalization of Higher Education is the way to go for all universities that seek to respond

to the demands of globalization. Uganda is standing at a time when economic development is

pegged to the quality of its human resource and therefore the University’s core role is not

misplaced in nation building.

Honorable Chief Guest, Ndejje University has progressed and tremendously diversified its

mandate from the traditional teaching, research and community engagement and ventured

into various innovations. Over the years the University has had innovations in robotics, renewable

energy and water resources. I also happily learnt that your organisation gave the University a

contribution towards the 1st Ndejje University International Scientific Conference on Bio-Waste

Recycling that was held in September 2016. Thank you so much for the contribution and the

interest you have in Ndejje University.

In line with today’s theme, the University wants to consolidate its innovations as she ventures into

areas which will address community and national concerns in order to be relevant. I want to

note that all these efforts would not yield results without the team work of the University

Management and staff.

I am aware that the University rolled out a ten year Strategic Plan; 2017/18 -2026/27 with eight

pillars; I trust that with good guidance from the new Council and its boards, the University

Management and staff will be able to realise all the strategic objectives by 2027.

I commend the University for starting the PhD programme in Business Management; this was

accredited by National Council for Higher Education in December 2016. I have also been

informed that a Certificate course in Clinical Medicine will soon start at this very Campus.

Finally to the Graduands, congratulations! Ndejje University is your alma mater and the world is

looking out to see you reflecting this. You have acquired both academic and soft skills which the

world out there needs to tap. Try your level best through your behaviour and work ethics to justify

the need for higher education; make a positive difference in the communities you are going.

Always remain God fearing responsible citizens, endeavor to be innovative and exploit all

opportunities available both in Uganda and abroad. May the good Lord bless you.

We have once again come to yet another milestone, the twentieth (20th B) Graduation

Ceremony in the life of Ndejje University. Today we are graduating our second cohort of

students who in this academic year; these are mainly from our January Intake, affiliated

instituitons and those that missed the October graduation ceremony. I salute all the graduands,

their parents, guardians, sponsors and staff on this auspicious landmark of their lives. Let the

Praise, Honour and Glory be returned to our Lord God who has made it possible for all what we

are witnessing today.

The Graduation occasion is both a moment of reflecting back to one’s academic journey with

gratitude and a starting moment when the graduates get launched into the orbit of service. To

the graduates, allow me to challenge you that from today onwards, you are going to begin

demonstrating to the world that your study at Ndejje University was not in vain. You have

received holistic education preparing you for versatility and confidence in whatever you do.

Your certificate, diploma or degree will make sense only when it is put to the service of mankind

and society at large.

The Graduation Theme of 2018 is: “Consolidating, Collaboration, Innovation and Internalization

of Higher Education”. This theme arose out of the realization that for the past decade, Ndejje

University, a non-profit institution, has strived to excel in the domain of higher education through

partnerships and collaboration in different parts of the globe. To preserve continuity, this theme

has been enshrined as a pillar in its ten year Strategic Plan 2017-2018. This theme also draws its

inspiration from the overall vision for Africa based on advocacy for global synergies in higher

education development.

STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2027

Ndejje University Strategic Plan is anchored on eight pillars with corresponding objectives:

PILLAR ACTIVITIES

Pillar 1: Academic Programmes

Strategic Objective 1: Develop and deliver relevant academic programmes.

This is achieved through the work and technical guidance carried out at faculty level.

We have seven faculties namely,

i. Faculty of Education

ii. Faculty of Business Administration and Management

iii. Faculty of Social Sciences

iv. Faculty of Basic Sciences and ICT

v. Faculty of Engineering

vi. Faculty of Environment and Agricultural Sciences

vii. Faculty of Arts

The Graduate School accommodates Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and PhD programmes.

Our Extra Mural Programmes are mounted for those who intend to go for short courses and those

who require short term skills based on modular delivery.

Establishment of Faculty of Health Sciences at Ndejje University is in progress

The University is in preparation to set up a Faculty of Health Sciences starting August 2019. The

agreed Philosophy of the faculty is “To Be a Centre for Rural Health Excellency in Africa”.

Phased introduction different courses is to be implemented starting with Diploma in Clinical and

Community Health in August 2019. Subsequently, we intend to introduce Bachelor of Medicine

and Bachelor of Surgery, Nursing courses, Public Health, Health Management and Medical

Laboratory courses.

Progress on Diploma in Clinical and Community Health:

i. The course is to be introduced in August 2019

ii. Curriculum for the course as submitted to National Council for Higher Education and the

Allied Health Professionals Council

iii. Inspection by the Allied Health Professionals Council took place last month.

About 90% of the University courses have been accredited by NCHE (National Council for Higher

Education) and the remaining ones are awaiting approval by NCHE.

Pillar 2: Research and Innovations

Strategic objective 2: Promote knowledge generation, innovations and outreach services.

Research and Innovations have been fostered through strategic partnerships of the University

with individuals, Government and Non-Government organizations.

The following initiatives have been accomplished towards the development of entrepreneurial

innovations at Ndejje University.

a. Energy Research and Development Center

b. Water Research and Development Center

e. ICT and Robotics Unit

Pillar 3: Students Services

Strategic Objective 3: Provide supportive student services.

Management places students’ services at the centre of its activities.

Pillar 4: Governance and Management Systems

Strategic Objective 4: Strengthen governance and management systems.

Ndejje University is owned by Ndejje University Consortium. The Consortium has a Board of

Trustees comprising of sitting Bishops of the Six Dioceses in Central Uganda.

The governance of Ndejje University is vested in the:

a) Chancellor

b) University Council

c) Central Executive Committee and Top Management Committee.

All statutory meetings and Boards of Council always take place as scheduled and this has

enabled all the stakeholders to have a clear reflection of what is being done in the institution.

Pillar 5: Human Resource Capacity

Strategic Objective 5: Strengthen human resource capacity

Our staff Development Programme focuses on two fronts. One is to encourage all our Graduate

Students with Bachelor degrees complete the Masters degrees. The other is to increase on our

PhD components by recruiting experienced professors and also encouraging our Masters holders

to embark on doctoral studies.

Pillar 6: Financial Sustainability

Strategic Objective 6: Promote financial sustainability.

Ndejje University is a non-profit institution with zero share capital. Its income is mainly derived

from tuition fees which is also not in consonance with the services offered. It has continued to

experience challenges brought about by ‘austerity measures’ and economic downturn.

The University asset base has reached a market fair value of 75billion shillings representing a

growth potential of the University.

Pillar 7: Infrastructure and ICT capacity

Strategic Objective 7: Expand and maintain infrastructure and ICT capacity

We have introduced online application processes to ease access for students that are far from

our geographical locations to join the University.

We have expanded our wireless networks on the Main and Lady Irene Campuses to 80%

coverage so that our students get even more access to internet and other network based

services like the online library materials, as well as their electronic students’ portals for some self

service facilities.

Pillar 8: Partnership and Collaboration

Strategic Objective 8: Develop strategic partnerships and collaborations.

Public-Private Partnership (PPP)

During the celebrations of the Silver Jubilee last year, one of the major activities was the launch

of the Academia-Public Private Partnerships. This has widened the visibility of the University and is

continuously bringing the public and private sector closer to the Institution thereby leading to

enhanced support.

I am happy to mention that both Government and the private sector have continued to support

our sports and training activities. Further, our science and Engineering programmes are being

supported through infrastructural development and provision of qualified students through the

Higher Education Loan Scheme and State House Scholarship scheme.

This has improved our local and international visibility. The collaborations have resulted into the

setting up of six research centres, namely; Energy, Water, Agriculture, Business incubation Centre

and Civic Management and Participation. The core business of the centres is to develop

scalable models and structures for social and scientific innovations.

CONCLUSION

Let take this opportunity to congulatulate you upon your achievements; the guardians thanks

you for all the support to the graduands; our visitors we are excited by your presence on this

auspicious occasion.

A WORD FROM THE ACADEMIC REGISTRAR

I convey my heartfelt congratulations to all the stakeholders of

Ndejje University on this 20TH B graduation ceremony. Today for the

first time the University is holding its second graduation ceremony

in the academic year on top of the routine October graduation

ceremony. This is has risen out of the need to meet the desires of

our clientele especially the students who enroll on the January

Intake. This also comes as an opportunity for the students who

missed the October graduation ceremony.

The education system has evolved over the years. In the 20th Century universities competed

against themselves in terms of quality of products. In the current generation universities are

drawing their strength from unity, collaborations and partnerships. Universities are not partnering

with themselves only but with non- academic organisations and institutions. The synergy of the

universities and institutions or organisation creates a healthy coexistence where either of them is

supported by the other to realise continuous survival.

The benefits from the synergy take the form of provision of technical advice, provision of human

resources and other tangible resources. Universities have to work closely with the communities

where they exist since they draw their customers from these communities and in turn send their

products to be employed and offer skills and services to these communities. Universities have to

closely consult the end users of their products during the process of curricular design and review.

Today’s theme is “Consolidating, collaborations, innovations and internationalization of Higher

Education.” In today’s context the term consolidate means to strengthen, Ndejje has over the

last five years put efforts to solicit for partners in research and innovations, exchange academic

programmes and community engagements. There are a number of innovations in the faculties

of Engineering; Faculty of Basic Sciences and Information Technology and Faculty of

Environment and Agricultural Sciences which have benefited the communities.

Internationalization of education has taken the form of admitting International students

especially from the East African region. The University boosts of a population of over 200

international students and this number is bound to grow in the coming years.

Today’s graduands, you are graduating from the prestigious Ndejje University; you have tasted

the academic menu and it’s no doubt that you have been well equipped for the work ahead of

you.

1. COLLECTION OF CERTIFICATES AND TRANSCRIPTS

A. Before collecting your certificate and transcript, please ensure that you have

complied with the following requirements;

i. A clearance form duly completed and signed by all the respective officers. The

forms are received from the Accounts offices.

ii. Fully cleared and signed results by the Faculty Dean or Examination Coordinator

at the Faculty.

B. For those who do not pick their documents on the graduation day, visit the

Academic Registrar’s Office-Main Campus beginning Tuesday 12th, March 2019.

i. Tuesday 12:00 – 4:00pm

ii. Wednesday 12:00 – 4:00pm

iii. Thursday 12:00 – 4:00pm

2. NAME(S) ON THE CERTIFICATE AND TRANSCRIPT

The University prints on the certificate and transcript, name (s) as stated on your ‘O’ and

‘A’ level results slips at the time of registration, and Bachelors for the Graduate Students.

Any discrepancies in spelling have to be notified at the Faculty a month before

graduation. Please be informed that the Original certificate is printed ONCE for each

graduand and no original replacement will be availed in the event of loss/damage after

issuance of such document to the graduand.

3. CERTIFICATE AND TRANSCRIPT CERTIFICATION

Certification of the mentioned documents is done at a fee of Ugx. 5,000/- per copy

payable at the University Cash Office in the Admissions’ Office. Originals MUST always be

presented at the time of request for certification.
