Tip:Use your cell phoneto record your elevator speech. You can listen to yourselfback to see if there is anythingyou need to fine tune!

Rule #1: Prepare your elevator speech

• 60-90 seconds

• Should include:

Rule #2: Craft answers to behavioral interview questions

What is Behavioral Event Interviewing (BEI)?

• Based on the idea that “Past performance on the job is the best predictor of future performance.”

• “Tell me about a time…”

How can I predict which behavioral questions might be asked?

• You can’t!

• You CAN prepare for BEI questions by developing ‘universal’ stories from your background.

• 4-6 stories from your professional experience; recent & relevant

• CAR Framework

− C=Challenge

− A=Action

− R=Result

CAR FrameworkAnswering behavioral interview questions

C = CHALLENGE

What was the challenge or problem that you faced?Be specific and describe the project, team, event and your role.

1A = ACTION

What did you or your team do to answer the challenge or solve the problem?Don’t just speak in “we.” Specify your actions.

R = RESULT

Discuss the result achieved/outcome.Use metrics!

Common behavioral interview questions

Tell me about a time when you had to solve a problem with very little guidanceor direction.

Describe a time when you had to work with a difficult client/unhappy customer/difficult co-worker.

Give me an exampleof a time when you

motivated others and how that led to a positive outcome.

Tell me about a time when you had to persuade

leadership to make an unpopular decision.

Describe a time when you showed initiative and took the lead.

Example of a strong CAR answer

Challenge:My role as project manager is to ensure that projects are completed on time and under budget. Last year, I was asked by leadership to combine three office spaces into one. With a tight deadline of 90 days and dealing with multiple contractors from different companies, I knew it was going to be a struggle to complete the job in time. I set the goal of having everything completed within 80 days to give us 10 days at the end to make final corrections.

Action: By dividing all the different contractors into three main teams and having three project managers controlling the three teams, I was able to create a more efficient and effective work timetable and ensure that downtime was kept to a minimum.

Result: As a result of this more efficient working time we completed the job on time and reduced costs by 15%. This new way of dividing contractors into smaller teams has now been implemented into standard work procedure and seen a reduction in overall costs.

• Read recent press releases

• Get the “inside scoop” onthe interview process

• Review interviewer social media profiles

• Identify key needs and pain points

• “Why do you want to work here?”

Rule #4: Demonstrate enthusiasm

• “I was excited to hear about this role because….”

• “I am passionate about your company’s mission.”

• “I have some great ideas to help with your business problem.”

• “I have been following your company in the news and was excited to hear about your recent (merger/acquisition/practice growth).”

• “I look forward to the next steps of the interview process.”

Frequently asked interview questions and answers

• Honesty is often the best policy. Be short and sweet. Focus on the future, not the past.

• “I had a great experience at ABC – learned a lot and developed a network that will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, the project that I was assigned to ended and there was limited work available in my area of expertise. As a result, I was part of a team-wide reduction. I am excited for a new challenge.”

• “My last salary at ABC was x. I’m open to discussion depending on the salary range for this role. Can you share that?”

• Don’t withhold or inflate your salary. It will likely be checked during a background investigation!

Why are youleaving your current

employer?

What are yoursalary expectations?
