F irst, I need to apologize for my hasty mention of the Christmas Coloring Contest in the October issue. I stated the coloring page was to be in the

November issue with results featured in December. That was incorrect. It will be in the December issue, the winner will be announced on December 20th and the top picks shown in the January issue. Sorry for the miscommunication. First place will receive a $25 gift card to Toys R Us. How was your Halloween? Did you attend the party on Osprey Pointe PL? Please send any pictures, from that event, if you have them for the next issue. I would have loved to have been there, but had Trick or Treat duty. If you have any pictures from Halloween night or your lovely Thanksgiving decorations, we would love to display them.

Be Thankful Thanksgiving PoemBe thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?Be thankful when you don't know something,

for it gives you the opportunity to learn.Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.Be thankful for your limitations,

because they give you opportunities for improvement.Be thankful for each new challenge,

because it will build your strength and character.Be thankful for your mistakes.

They will teach you valuable lessons.Be thankful when you're tired and weary, because it means you've made a difference. It's easy to be thankful for the good things.A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who

are also thankful for the setbacks.Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,

and they can become your blessings. Cindi Matter/Publisher

on or near the baseline. They will usually have one big weapon they use to dictate play and only come to the net behind an attacking shot for the easy volley to finish a point. Here are four tactics that you can use to combat that style of play:High, Deep & Heavy Keep the ball deep with plenty of penetrating topspin. This will keep the ball out of their strike zone and force them to create their own power.Don’t give up The more balls you retrieve, the more you will frustrate this style of player. Show them that they will have to hit it harder and harder to get it past you and, hopefully, this will force them to make many unforced errors.Stay within your game Stay within your game. Avoid matching their power and hitting shots that are beyond you. Accept the winners and use your mental game to force them to hit more and more from difficult situations. Use your time between points to regain control of your intensity of play.

Serve at Them Take away their ability to attack from the first ball by serving at the body. These are easy things that you can do to be a successful player. Remember, Andre Agassi always said that the most important point is the next one. To be a true champion on the court, you must think of and play every point as if it is the first of the match – that will ensure you don’t obsess about a lost point or get too confident on a single great play. Having really poor short-term memory is also a plus in the game of tennis.

GOLF Golf Head Pro – Ben Chambers

Tip of the MonthToo often we keep too much weight on the target side of our body then fall back on the opposite side as we swing through. Imagine a right handed baseball pitcher, pitching out of the stretch trying to throw off the wrong foot, the results would be less than satisfactory!!. To correct this problem I like to have my students begin with more weight at address on their back foot and simply try to turn their front shoulder and arm back to start the swing. At the top of your back swing this should put the buttons on your shirt directly over your right knee if you are right handed. From this position it is simply a matter of turning back to the ball and allowing your arms to swing freely back to the ball. After impact you should be balanced over your front foot. A good drill to work on balance is to hit balls with your feet tight together. Swing and try not to fall off balance.

Books for Troops: GFWC New Tampa Junior

Woman’s Club (NTJWC) and Juniorettes partner with

local businesses Books for Troops, a new project of GFWC New Tampa Juniors and Juniorettes started in October. Several businesses have partnered with them to

collect the books in the blue boxes. “Arleen Andrews at Bangs and Blondes in Wesley Chapel, Anita Long at Business Ink Printing in Temple Terrace were our first partners,” said Patricia Murphy the project chairman. "Then Dr. Levin in Wesley Chapel and New Tampa Well Spa joined the blue box campaign.“Our partners have been accepting donations of paperback books at their locations” We also collected many books from the Hunter's Green Garage Sale on Saturday, October 1st." “Initially this project was about collecting a few books from our members as a form of recycling and sending them to our troops. However, in the past few weeks it has blossomed into a huge event with the help of our GFWC sisters in District 8.” Want to start a book collection at your office and support Books for Troops? “Just collect paperbacks from your friends or neighbors and then drop them off at one of our business partners or call or email me for pick up of 100 books or more” said Murphy.

Ms. Murphy said, “In the next phase of this project I’d like to see donations of hardback large print books for the library at Baldomero Lopez Memorial Veterans Nursing Home. When I was little my grandmother was always reading rather than watching television. The joy of reading is something she passed down to me and something I’d like to share with local veterans too.” "We are collecting all kinds of books. Even comic books. Basically any books that the Troops can read during their down time,”said Murphy, “We CAN NOT accept books about religion, the apocalypse or pornographic materials.” If you would like to volunteer or make a donation for postage please contact Patricia Murphy for more information [email protected] or [email protected]

The North Tampa Art League is proud to announce John Henne as their Artist for the Month of November John’s creative drive evolved while growing up among artistic family members in Venice, Florida. John has sketched and painted throughout his life and after a successful career in the corporate world, he departed in 1996 to focus on his art. He has attended selected art classes at the University of South Florida and Hillsborough Community College, as well as many seminars. Part of the educational process was a six-week tour of Europe visiting most of the major museums. John is active in the art community and is founder, past president and a board member of the North Tampa Arts League, John has been a board member of the Arts Council of Hillsborough County and is a past member (past chairman) of the Artist Advisory Committee. John currently works out of his North Tampa studio daily. John would like to involve his clients in

the art making process, thus Personalized Fine Art. The client can contribute as much as they would like to the painting process, from theme, to composition, to color. John will work closely with the client to achieve this end and most of his commissions are realized by word of mouth. For the first seven years of his art career, John studied famous artist who painted realism in the bravado style. During this period, John honed his drawing, and painting skills. For the next four years, John focused entirely on artistic fundamentals in the creation of abstracts. Currently and for the past number of years, John’s work has combined his experience of painting realism and the free flow of what was learned in creating abstracts. John’s work will be on display at the

New Tampa Library at 10001 Cross Creek Blvd., November 1st through November 31st. John will be displaying two large (36“ x 42“) pieces of work that will be for sale. John’s work can also be viewed at PersonalizedFineArt.net or http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/john-henne.html. John can be reached at 813-971-3016 or by email at [email protected].

Youth Gardening Think back to your earliest memories of enjoying gardening. How old were you? Who showed you how to garden? Chances are you were a child and the person who introduced you to gardening was a family member. Children love to work in the dirt, to plant a seed. YOU can teach them to care about their environment and their world. We as gardeners can positively effect their future and ours. Won’t you share your gardening skills with youngsters, kindergarten through 5th grade? YOU can form a new group of 4 to 6 children or work in a school classroom with 20 students. How about an after school group or a partnership with 4-H or scouts?

Since opening the first Farina Orthodontics in New Tampa in early 1995, Dr. Mark Farina has had a lot to smile about. Dr. Farina opened his second location in South Tampa later that same year due to an increased demand for his unique brand of orthodontic care. Today, seventeen years into a flourishing private practice, Dr. Farina has treated more than 9,000 smiles, from age seven to 82. The secret to Dr. Farina’s outstanding success is no secret. As a young boy, Mark always had a tool in his hand, while following his father, the mechanic, around the shop. Mark turned that fascination for fixing things into a professional passion. “Now, I change people’s lives every day,” Dr. Farina says, “I absolutely love what I do.” Maybe that is why Dr. Farina’s patients are not the only ones smiling. Anyone

who knows Dr. Farina know he is always cheerful. Longtime patients and staff agree, “Dr. Farina really is that happy all the time.” Dr. Farina holds advanced training in orthodontics and TMJ. He is an esteemed Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and was voted by his peers as one of the area’s top ten orthodontists. A leading pioneer in bringing the latest advancements in orthodontics to the Tampa Bay area, Dr. Farina was among the first to introduce 3-D imaging, SureSmile® technology and other innovations, which are dramatically improving orthodontic care. Thanks to the new technologies, his patients experience greater comfort, come for fewer office visits and spend 34% less time in braces. For Dr. Farina, all his success stands on a strong foundation of family and

community. His wife of twenty-one years, who works in the business, and his two teenage sons live in New Tampa. You can expect Dr. Farina to bring the newest innovations in orthodontic care to the Bay area as they become available. The little boy with the tool in his hand is still fascinated with any technology that can help his patients enjoy a better way to a beautiful smile. Dr. Farina looks forward to creating happy, healthy smiles in the Bay area for many years to come.

FROM THE EXPERT

esearch shows clearly that children are more likely to succeed when

their families actively support them. Families who involve their children in activities that allow the children to talk, explore, experiment, and wonder show that learning is both enjoyable and important. They motivate their children to take pleasure in learning and to want to learn more. They prepare them to be successful in school and in life. What happens at home affects what happens at school. Although you can’t be with your child in the classroom, there is plenty you can do to ensure that he behaves properly in a classroom environment: Start the day off right. Your child’s school day begins at home, so start off on a positive note. After breakfast, give him a big hug and tell him how proud you are of him. Pack a healthy lunch. Don’t fill your

child’s lunchbox with empty calories or junk food. Offer nutritious, energy-rich foods. They will help him concentrate and keep him primed to learn. Adopt an after school ritual. Set aside 10-20 minutes when you do nothing but listen as your child talks about his day. Don’t sort mail, don’t start dinner. Just be there for him. Let your child do his own homework. Give him a quiet space to work, and then let him get busy. You’ll be showing him that, just like at school, it’s important to work independently at home. Be a partner in your child’s education. Both you and the teacher have your child’s best interest at heart. Encourage respect for his teachers, read your child’s planner so that you know what he is studying, attend all conferences and school events. By doing so, you show your child that you have a dedicated interest in their learning. Teach respect by daily example. You want your child to show respect for you, his teachers and people in general – not to mention respect for rules and belongings. Teaching respect is a big

job. But thankfully, research shows a specific method to use. Children learn respect when they are treated with respect. So make these simple rules a daily habit: Communicate with respect. Listen attentively to your child. Don’t interrupt. Make sure you understand what he is saying. Focus on the positive. Practice solving problems calmly. Use “I” statements (“I feel ignored when you don’t answer me”) instead of hurtful accusations (“You always ignore me”). Take responsibility. When you make an agreement with your child, stick to it – and expect him to do the same. Be encouraging. Support your child’s interest and strengths. Talk about values. What does your child value? How can he show this? Strong character should be a source of pride.
