INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY Acts 6:1-7 * 1 Peter 2:4-9 * John 14:1-12

We are living stones aligned with Christ, the cornerstone. Let the Church rejoice as we, the living body of Christ, have recently welcomed many sisters and brothers, new members of the household of faith. Let us encourage those newly joined to us in the sacraments of baptism and confirmation to fully live their new identity as part of a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. In the first reading, the Twelve choose seven reputable men to be their assistants and serve at table. In his Letter, Peter writes that all who have faith are to be living stones, imitating Christ. In John’s Gospel, Jesus declares himself the way and the truth and the life, calling those who believe in him to do the works he does.

In the second reading today, Saint Peter provides one of the most beautiful, inspiring, and challenging definitions of what it means to be a Christian and part of the Church: You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. As the Easter season continues, Christians everywhere rejoice that the risen Christ has called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. We exercise our royal priesthood as a community of believers when we share our faith with others, inviting them to become part of God’s chosen race. This faith we share, this chosen race that unites us, is one that follows Jesus, who is the way and the truth and the life. It assures us that neither his story nor ours will end in death. The cross, once a symbol of torture, with Jesus’ holy hands nailed to it, becomes a trophy. It is a key with which Jesus unlocks for us the gates of heaven and gains access for us to the Father’s house, where there are many dwelling places.

FEED A FAMILY – Red Deer Catholic School District

During this time of school building closures, we have been working to provide lunches for families in need. To date, the division has supported 52 families with basic lunch items, such as milk, bread, juice boxes, fruit, etc. These food items are delivered to the doorsteps of these families by our staff while maintaining social distancing. ● We are happy to provide continued support for our families through the Alberta Education school nutrition grant. We order food online from local grocery stores and it is then distributed to the families. ● Research shows students learn better and are able to achieve the goals of education when they have eaten a healthy meal. For the next 12 weeks, we hope to use the school nutrition grant to continue providing basic lunch items for these families.

Would you like to help? We are accepting donations to help feed our families. If you would like to donate, please send an etransfer to [email protected] with the password Montfort and a message with your full name - nutrition fund. Any donations will be given a tax receipt - please send [email protected] an email with your full name, mailing address and phone number. Thank you and stay safe!

Letter of His Holiness Pope Francis to the Faithful for the Month of May 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The month of May is approaching, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view. For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow. I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone. Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.

Rome, Saint John Lateran, 25 April 2020 Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist

FIRST PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS TO BE RECITED AFTER THE ROSARY

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith. “Protectress of the Roman people”, you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

SECOND PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS TO BE RECITED AFTER THE ROSARY

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”. In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection. Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment. Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust. Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health. Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone. Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus. Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity. Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer. Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course. To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

A PRAYER IN GRATITUDE FOR OUR MOTHERS

Good and Gentle God,

we pray in gratitude for our mothers and for all the women of theory who have joined with you in the wonder of bringing forth new life. You who became human through a woman, grant to all mothers the courage they need to face the uncertain future that life with children always brings. ● Give them the strength to live and to be loved in return, not perfectly, but humanly. ● Give them the faithful support of husband, family and friends as they care for the physical and spiritual growth of their children. ● Give them joy and delight in their children to sustain them through the trials of motherhood. Most of all, give them the wisdom to turn to you for help when they need it most.

The past few weeks since the coronavirus was first detected in many parts of the world have been unusually cataclysmic. These are days of abnormal fear, panic, anxiety and hopelessness with towering ramifications on human health, financial security, social life and future goals. Fear, loneliness and stress have become companions in many of our homes, even Christian households. When social and

spiritual interactions are thwarted, not by choice but by circumstances beyond our control, we are forced to adjust. Consequently, functioning as a church in these times of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed for all churches. As a pastor of St. Matthew Church in Rocky Mountain House and missions in Evergreen and Caroline, my first role is to uplift the parishioners. I remind all our parishioners that God is still in the business of protecting his own and to stay strong until the Lord’s delivering power is fully exerted over the coronavirus outbreak.
