°' Whatever else we can say about the likes of Jesse Helms, ~ Phyliss Shefley, Gary Bauer; their anti-homosexual bias is a ~ matter of public record and we can know these enemies for what ~ they are. Such is not the case with what is othenvise probably ~ the best newspaper in the United States, The New York limes. ~ Until a couple of years ago, The limes was run by Abe ~ Rosenthal, a champion of the First Amendment and a u. homophobe. It was Rosenthal who enforced The limes' style, to ~ wit, "gay" could only be used in a direct quote or in a headline if ;5 "homosexual" wouldn't fit. ~ It is The limes which, much like Mayor Koch and Ronald ~ Reagan, took years to recognize an AIDS crisis. And even today, u when nearly everyone recognizes AIDS as the major health ~ issue, The limes does not have a full-time reporter devoted to ~ this issue, an otherwise common practice at The limes. a? Now to our point: As many of you doubtless know, a New York

~ :::::::~r;i;~:~sci~u~::/ ::::k~i':~~:~~~~v::';,~~':! "' has the same rights to a rent-controlled apartment as the

suroivor of a traditional marriage. This week The limes got around to an editorial on this

decision but not once mentioned the homosexual issue which was crucial to the decision. In fact, The limes avoided any reference to "same sex'' or any other inference implying that this case had anything to do with anyone other than an unmarried heterosexual couple. To call the editorial obtuse would be a mild understatement.

The limes basically attacked the decision as "impractical," concluding that in each case "the courts will have to decide whether tenants and their guests regard themselves as spouses, whether their friends regard them as such, whether they share responsibility for the household budget." We would gladly accept such a burden of proof if that were all it took for gay lovers to establish even this limited right. And we are sure any gay couple in New York City in a rent-controlled apartment would also, quite willingly, shoulder such a burden of proof. If this is the portion The limes sees as "impractical" then we must conclude that The limes is generally blinded by the least of obstacles.

But The limes is consistent in its editorializing against the gay community, obtusely speaking that is. In an editorial last week The limes took the General Accounting Office to task for suggesting there has been a massive underestimating of AIDS cases. The limes, in/act, suggested the GAO is "playing politics with the numbers."

Unfortunately, The limes then goes on to suggest that "the epidemic will peak, and maybe sooner than many forecasters expect." While we would like The limes to be right in this case their facts to support this conclusion are at odds with their own news articles.

The limes ran this editorial right after the gay Pride Parade in New York (which prominently demanded more action from Koch and the city) and while The limes was lauding New York City Health Commissioner Stephen Joseph's halving estimates of infected New Yorkers (yes, Joseph is the same man who, at the recent Toronto AIDS conference called for mandatory HW testing).

Fortunately, what makes The limes a great newspaper is that the editorial boord does not run the rest of the newspaper. Thus, The limes, in last Sunday's magazine, ran an article by David Leavitt, one of the brighter lights in gay literature, that touched on many basic fallacies of straight reporting on gays and AIDS.

The bottom line, however, is that we know many major newspapers, overtly or othenvise, distort or ignore gay issues and The limes, an acknowledged liberal voice, illustrates our inability to be fairly heard and seen.

One answer would be a strong and vigorous national gay press covering the news and newspapers (and television). But that's our problem, we're always wanting so much.
