The Hobbit by J. R. R. TolkienThe story of The Hobbit started with a simple sentence “In a hole in the

ground, there lived a hobbit” while Tolkien was making school

certificate papers. The story about a short creature living in a world

called Middle-earth became an instant and enduring classic. Although

the book was first written as a children’s book, it is commonly

understood as a link between earlier and later events described in The

Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings. With the success of the book, The Hobbit, J. R. R.

Tolkien got the opportunity to start a multivolume epic, The Lord of the Rings.
