The Birth of a New 4Life® Product

Every 4Life product goes through thousands of hours of research and hundreds of tests to ensure you get the very best. Here’s an inside look at how 4Life products are researched, developed, tested, and delivered to market.

STEP 2 Members of the executive team, including David, Bianca, and Steve, determine which new product ideas will be pursued. Then a timeline is created.

STEP 3 4Life conducts months or sometimes years of research before a product formula is created. The Research and Development (R&D) team investigates ingredients based on uniqueness and efficacy benefits.

The International Product Registration (IPR) team conducts research to determine which proposed ingredients are accepted in specific countries. Then, IPR members begin the extensive international product registration process. The Product Marketing team researches packaging, pricing, market demand, and launch strategy.

STEP 1 To begin, key 4Life® employees attend a bi-weekly product concepts meeting to discuss new product ideas and products in various developmental phases. Many ideas are suggested by Founders David and Bianca Lisonbee, while others come from distributor requests, popular trends, or emerging needs.


STEP 5 The product’s delivery method must be determined once a formula is created. Will it be a capsule, chewable, or powder? Will it be contained in a box, bottle, canister, or bag? The R&D team also develops options for potential flavors.

STEP 4 The R&D team extensively tests and reviews each raw ingredient before creating a tentative formula. 4Life has a strict vetting process for each ingredient supplier. Ingredients must be available long term, and the supplier must ensure sustained quality.

Quality testing is conducted throughout every step of the process to ensure consistency in identity, purity, strength, and composition.

If a certain ingredient is not accepted in a key market, 4Life® might create a revised product formula. 4Life performs as many tests on market-specific products as it does for products created for worldwide distribution.

Beyond the required testing, 4Life® takes pride in conducting extensive pharmaceutical-level testing on every product.

STEP 7 Additional product testing can be done through numerous university studies. In these studies, cutting-edge research is performed on 4Life products

How are new products named?It sometimes resembles the process of naming a new baby. You might not know the perfect name until the “baby” has arrived! In all seriousness, naming 4Life® products is a collaborative process. We like to have a name that reflects a key ingredient or benefit of the product itself. Often, we solicit the help of different departments to ensure we come up with the best name possible—and hopefully one that will be easily understood in other languages.

For example, I love the story behind 4Life Transfer Factor® RioVida® Tri-Factor® Formula. RioVida was born out of my research in Brazil and the amazing properties of the açaí berry. The name “RioVida” means “river of life” in Portuguese and reflects the bounteous benefits of the berries in the formula.

How do you come up with new product ideas?Ideas are most often borne out of prevailing health needs in the marketplace. I also often get ideas from my ongoing research about transfer factors and other promising nutrients.

What is your favorite aspect of the new product creation process?I love watching the entire research and development process unfold. It’s satisfying to see a product progress from mere research and data into something that we can put into people’s hands to help change their lives.

What is the most challenging aspect of the product development process?It can be very challenging to navigate the regulations for different countries. Thankfully, we have a great team led by Chief Operating Officer Danny Lee and Vice President of International Product Registration Catherine Larsen. They work tirelessly to ensure that we can get products approved in as many countries as possible.

President and CEO Steve Tew has been an integral figure throughout the history of 4Life®. Steve is dedicated to supporting distributors with the very best products and business opportunity to achieve success. Read on to learn more about him!

WHAT’S YOUR TYPICAL WORKDAY LIKE? I wake up at 5:30 am and catch the news of the day while getting ready. By 6:15 am, I’m out the door to the office in my running clothes. When I get to work, I respond to pressing emails and business news. I leave the office by 7:30 am to run along a nearby river trail. I run five or six miles, six days a week. Occasionally, I ride my road bike for 20 or 25 miles. After showering at the office, I eat yogurt, a protein bar, and a few nuts. For lunch, I often visit one of the restaurants close by. This is a great opportunity to visit with other 4Life executives about company news all over the world.

During the day, I speak with employees about international markets and regulatory challenges. We talk about new products being developed and how best to market them. We talk about every aspect of 4Life! I also respond to emails and review information relating to company growth and operations. With offices in 24 countries around the world, there is always a lot going on!

I normally leave the office around 7:30 pm, except on Friday evenings, when my wife Sherma and I enjoy our regular dinner date night. After work, I relax in my home office, watch TV, catch up on world news, and sometimes sneak in a bit of work.

WHICH 4LIFE OFFICES HAVE YOU VISITED THIS YEAR? During the past year, I have visited the markets of Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Indonesia, and the Dominican Republic. Plus, I attended 4Life meetings in Florida and California in September.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF ATTENDING 4LIFE MEETINGS?I love hearing stories from distributors who have changed their lives through 4Life—people who have experienced great health support, families who have achieved a more secure financial future, and distributors who have rendered service around the world.

WHAT SETS 4LIFE APART? Our people make the difference! You truly care about one another. You lift others to achieve more than they might do otherwise. And you recognize that teamwork creates the best opportunity for success.

LAST BOOK YOU READ?Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. My son flies airplanes in the U.S. Air Force. It was amazing to read about the dedication and perseverance of Louis Zamperini, who served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Louis endured incredible hardships as a prisoner of war and became a better individual through his experiences.

FAVORITE MOVIE?“What About Bob?” There is no difficult plot to understand and no complex personalities to figure out—just ridiculous humor that lets me escape from the stress of the day.

FAVORITE TYPE OF FOOD? Seafood, if I’m looking for something healthy. If I want to indulge, nothing beats a burger!

FAVORITE HOBBY?Golf. I love to relax in the fresh mountain air, while playing a round of golf. Plus, it’s a great way to build patience, since things don’t always go as well as you would like!

4Life executives appointed David Vollmer, PhD as the company’s Chief Scientific Officer. Dr. Vollmer has more than 15 years of experience in quality control and analytical laboratory management.

The following promotions were announced in the Information Technology department: Andrew Weeks as Chief Information Officer, Rick Eastman as Senior Director of IT Support/Systems, and Dustin Rose as Senior Director of Software Development.

Other promotions include Kelly Bellerose to Vice President of Product Marketing; Brent Vaughan, PhD, RD as Senior Director of Health Information Services; Shane Lefler, MS as Senior Director of Product Development; and Adam Briggs as Analytical Lab Manager.

4. TEAM 4LIFE MEMBER BREAKS AMERICAN RECORD

Team 4Life member Brady Stewart recently won the 2015 USA Powerlifting (USAPL) Bench Press Nationals for the second time with a record-breaking bench press of 734 lbs. Stewart supplements with 4Life products, including PRO-TF®.

5. 4LIFE KOREA OPENS SUWON OFFICE

4Life Korea recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new office in Suwon to support the efforts of distributors throughout the country. The office includes space for business training and opportunity meetings.

6. COLOMBIA EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY

More than 5,000 distributors attended an eighth anniversary celebration and business symposium in Bogotá. The event celebrated market growth and launched new products.

7. MAKING A DIFFERENCE

I’ve heard before that we should leave people better than we found them. Sometimes all it takes is a smile, a sincere compliment, or even your undivided attention to communicate that you value other people and care about them.

David and I supervise about 200 young people in Brazil who serve others and try to make a difference in the world. It is so interesting to watch them change from timid and often homesick individuals into confident, young people who are filled with the joy of helping others. When you lose yourself in the service of others, you discover your best self in the process.

Service has always been an important aspect of the 4Life® mission of Together, Building People®. I am inspired by 4Life family members who leave individuals, families, and communities better than they found them. After struggling through impoverished childhoods and working to put themselves through college, Gold International Diamonds José Luis and Maria Martínez from the Dominican Republic give others the opportunity to achieve more with their lives. They provide leadership and scholarship programs for children in their native country. José has said, “Service gives meaning to our lives. Thanks to 4Life, we can make a difference for young people who want to succeed.”
