Climb High; Climb Far... Your aim the stars...

Commencement: noun [kuh-mens-muhnt]

an act, instance or time of starting and beginning.

So let’s go back to where all great stories start…the beginning…

Who can forget when you first walked through the gates of kinder-garten for the first time - anxious young students nervously clutch-ing your proud parents’ hands? How can we not remember the firsttime you read, wrote or memorized your multiplication table? Cananyone forget the first test and the panic attacks that came with it,Sports Day, award, performance, presentation, failure, and triumph?

What commencements those were…ones that marked the start of won-derful things to come. We watched you grow from uncertain kinder-garteners to rebellious and adventurous teenagers only to becomefine young men and women each with an assertive presence. It wasthe start of an intense journey of change, self-discovery and devel-opment, one where you remained steadfast, motivated and deter-mined. With each day you faced some incredible and memorablemoments - stepping stones that you used to pursue common goals.

The outcome of this long journey is the Graduating Class of 2012.

We are so proud of the success that you have made with the oppor-tunities you had. Our humble gifts to you are our wishes that yourfuture ahead continues to be characterized by compassion, objectiv-ity, independence, and audacity…that you continue to lead by exam-ple and work conscientiously…that your successes be many and yourtribulations be few.

Our biggest gift, however, is our belief in you… you who will alwaysbe our accomplishments, our rewards and our pride.

With today’s ceremony, we celebrate another milestone, another com-mencement… the rest of your lives.

Climb high; climb far; your goal the sky; your aim the stars.

Al Mawakeb School... a special home for 14 years...

14 years ago, we entered the gates of Al Mawakeb School for the firsttime. Our innocent eyes filled with tears and our little hands nervouslyclutched our parents’. Today after 14 years, those same eyes are still filledwith tears, but this time they are tears of bitter sweet happiness…bitterbecause we know that this is where we part ways…sweet because we canfinally taste the fruit of our labor. And those little hands, well they now-proudly carry our graduation certificates. It has been a long journey thatpassed so quickly. We will graduate but we will be carrying all the mem-ories created within the warm walls of our second home, Al MawakebSchool.

Al Mawakeb School... a special home for 14 years...

14 years ago, our parents escorted us into the school where we allattempted to hold back our tears and anxiety from going into a new place. As agitated as we were, in no time at all, an overwhelming exhilarationtook over…feelings of security, belonging and growth that spanned 14wonderful years. We experienced an intense journey of change, self-discovery and develop-ment. Together, we grew from inquisitive children to independent andlearned teenagers with a strong voice and presence. We remember our firstdays and the anxiety that overwhelmed us. As the years flew by, however, the worry subsided only to be replaced with an unprecedented excitementthat inspires us to follow the path that our school paved for us. People often define school as an institute for learning and growth, but tous who have spent 14 years here, such a definition is too bland andunworthy. When most students go about their lives moving from oneschool to another, Al Mawakeb sheltered and embraced us. It hasbecome an integral part of our lives and has hosted memories that makeus who we are today.

As we walk down the hallways bubbling with student life, we realize how much we will miss the placethat we have come to call home. We are now a family that started 14 years ago when we all walkedthrough the school doorstogether for the very firsttime. Our family grew big-ger and stronger everytime we welcomed andembraced a new studentor teacher to our home.Today, our family is com-plete and although each ofus is ready to part ways,we will never be trulyapart, for the memoriesthat live within us will for-ever keep us bonded.

I couldn’t believe it when I was recently told that I had made the final cut. So thenthere were nine. Just a few weeks ago, I was standing in a classroom with severalanxious seniors waiting for their turn to audition. Gradually, candidates were beingeliminated. I had thought that I would be among the first ones to go but I receivedmy call back. The school believed in me when I didn’t. So here I am today at thefinal hurdle. This is the ultimate step to my dream: to speak on behalf of the Classof 2012. What an honor it would be. I can already imagine the magnificentmoment. The excitement gushing through my veins. My smile stretching from earto ear. It would be the happiest day of my life. I know that I’m not there yet, butto make it this far, I feel that I’ve already won.

Abdallah Shirawi, 12E, Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha Campus

so many skilled orators...

I believe that behind every speech there is power. A speech is a way to unleash theenergy within you that wants to be heard. It is an art to be able to deliver a speechand it can only be meaningful when said from the depth of one’s heart.Throughout this year, we have faced numerous challenges which all required focusand diligence. Only a few weeks back, we got to audition for graduation speaker, which to me was not only a challenge but also a dream and a reward. To have thechance to represent my classmates and speak on their behalf is what drove me tothis stage in the competition. I remember perfectly last year’s graduation. It wasback then that I realized that I wanted to be up there speaking, and I honestlycould not wait any longer for this moment to realize my dream. I am happy toknow that we, the finalists, have the potential to conquer such a challenge, and I’mgrateful that this competition allowed us all to recognize our capabilities. Thisexperience will remain forever memorable and inspiring.

Amira Youssfi, 12B, The International School of Arts & Sciences - ISAS

A shaking microphone, an awkward stance, and a hesitant voice… My first audi-tion for speaker of the class of 2012 couldn’t have gone any worse. I stormed out of the audition room on the verge of a nervous breakdown, for Irealized that a dream I held for countless years had finally come to an end or soI thought! I gave up all hope for a call-back, so you obviously can’t begin toimagine the state of mind I was in when I was told that I had made it to the nextround. I was drowned with mixed feelings of elation and disbelief, but I was jolt-ed by anxiety when I realized I would have to relive the torment of auditioningall over again. Despite that, I understood that I’d been granted one final oppor-tunity to make my dream come true, so I vowed to do my very best to try tomake that dream a reality. Expecting the worst, but hoping for the best, I went

back to the audition knowing that it was now or never. I began reciting as if my life depended on it. Five huge smiles from five excited judges were the outcome of myspeech, and the praise I received made me believe that I truly made the best of my second chance. And truth betold, two days later I’m amongst the final nine. At this point, whether I am chosen or not doesn’t really matter, for it only shadows what truly is important, and that is the experience of auditioning itself. To simply put it, I hadthe experience of a life-time, and I can honestly look back at it and say: “I tried, I fought, and I still made itwhether I’m speaker or not”.

Ahmad Bin Thaneya, 12E, Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha Campus

so many skilled orators...

"Girls, you made it!" Those were Ms. Susan’swords to us, the Class of 2012. We were repre-senting the class that was at Al Mawakeb, AlBarsha from day 1 till today, the day we ventureonto another journey. Today, the honor wasbestowed upon me to be one of the top 9 final-ists. Standing there on the stage in front of ouresteemed directors, reading words that trulycome from my heart made me realize how thisdream that I once had has finally become a real-

ity. As I walked down the hall towards the stage, I felt assured that that is myplace. I was chosen amongst tens of other competitive speakers to represent theclass that welcomed me as a classmate, a friend, and most importantly a sister, always there in times of need.

Fatma Galadari , 12C, Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha Campus

When I was chosen as one of the 10 finalists Ifelt accomplished and things were suddenlyserious. The thought of speaking in front ofthree thousand parents and guests on behalf ofall the graduates was overwhelming. Images ofmy brother delivering his speech at last year’sgraduation started to flash back and now I canrelate more to what he felt. To my misfortuneI had to be away from Dubai during the finaltryouts and missed my chance to make it. Atfirst I felt disappointed and sad but then I real-ized that I was lucky and blessed to have gotten this far considering how greatthe competition was among my fellow mates from both Al Mawakeb and ISAS,that in itself was a huge accomplishment for me.

Cynthia Choueiry ,12A, The International School of Arts & Sciences - ISAS

Making it to the final stage of graduationspeech auditions is more than just anacknowledgment… it is an achievement. It genuinely feels exceptional to be one of thenine finalists. Nevertheless, it is human natureto feel the challenge. It was a challenge, not acompetition, for I was really consoled byeveryone’s modesty. We all shared the same goal yet we stood byand encouraged one another.

so many skilled orators...

Writing inspirational expressions, conveying deep feelings, practicing elocutionand pronunciation … it was all worth it. The experience itself of standing in thepresence of AMSI’s elite panel of judges was splendid. Let’s ignore the partwhere I almost fainted and my heart was practically hammering out of my chest.Other than that, getting chosen to audition for the graduation speech was aprivilege on its own. I seriously couldn’t have done it without the support of somany loved ones… my friends, Al Mawakeb, and most importantly, my FAMILY!

Heba Hijazi, 12A, Al Mawakeb School - Al Garhoud Campus

Senior year was certainly filled with its exceptional and memorable moments, but I never quite thought I’d consider the graduation speech audition as one ofthose moments, let alone that it would have such a positive impact on me. Theexperience had its surprising elements, starting with being chosen to auditionfor a second, then a third time. My lost and meandering self-esteem wasdefinitely boosted as a result. I now have a greater belief in my potential and amless dubious about my abilities. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity.

Nadine Nasser, 12A, Al Mawakeb School - Al Garhoud Campus

The whole experience of being able to audition for the speech has been wonder-ful. There were many eloquent and talented speakers who , like me, embarked onthis challenge to make their dream a reality. However, the greatest news was beingchosen among the finalists. It was an honor to know that I had been selectedamong such wonderful contestants. It’s one of the most thrilling experiences astudent can undertake, and being chosen to be part of such an elite group is anachievement that makes me feel nothing but very proud.

Nadine Ahmad Zaki, 12A, Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha Campus

I had always fantasized about reading the speech at my graduation, but this time,it was different. For the first time I felt this was it. Either I make it or I don’t. Inthe first try-out I walked in with all the courage I could muster, said the lines thatwere assigned for me to read, and walked out hoping for the best. But when Ireceived the news that I was qualified to the second round, my hope and deter-mination grew. I came back with even more self-confidence, not to mention Ms.Alissar’s encouraging words which pumped us up before going on stage. On thelast try-outs though, I encountered an obstacle that in a way motivated me. Onthe same day and at the same time as the try-outs, I had Dabké rehearsals for theRahbani play. Determined to get up on stage and give the jury what they expect-ed, I left my rehearsal and set out to the hall where I got up on stage and did what

had to be done. What this experience has done is not only boost my courage, self-confidence, and oratory skills, but it has gone beyond that by teaching me that when you want something, you set it as a target, and you investall your efforts in making it happen.
