Though beaten into fourth place overall, ^iike Gossett retained the club's cross country championship run at Blue Mountain Reservation, Feekskill, last nonth. Lori Jorgensen won the ladies open title while Roger Gocking and Judy Pickert captured their respective masters' titles. The club title races were run in conjunction with our age group cross country series sponsored by The Feekskill Running Foundation. Doug Miller, Brev/ster, was the overall winner beating Jim Medeiros, Feekskill, in 17:21. Medeiros was timed in 17:29 v/ith Yorktov/n High School senior, Jim Kennedy, third in 17:38. Gossett, winner of the first two races in the series, triumphed over Terry Horton. For Horton, recuperating from a year full of injuries, the race was a giant step on the road back vrtiich is, indeed, pleasing to note. Track champ Anthony Galfano continued to show his versatility by capturing third. Taconic Running Life DECEMBER 1983 GOSSETT, JORGENSEN CAPTURE CROSS COUNTRY TITLES Jorgensen v/as literally uncontested in t h e w o m e n ' s r a c e . M o o t h e r c l u b r i i e m b e r i n the 19—39 category was on hand to offer any challenge. Ladies? Lori, however, didn't slouch finishing fourteenth overall with a brisk 19:38 performance. Pickert, a first time master, ran away from V/endy Shile and Helena Stave to claim her laurel v^reath in 20:02, Cocking's vic tory gave him a perfect four-for—four in the series, beating out defending titlist, Dan Caffrey, in the process. While club participation was lox^r and somewhat disappointing, the real v/inners were the kids - especially Thomas Jeffer son Elementary School (Yorktown) teacher, Stu Bogdanoff, and his students. They really make the series worthv/hile. Our thanks to them and, of course, to the Peek- skill Running Foundation. For followers of George Orwell 1984 represents the culmination of thetotalitarianistic state. Fortunately Big Brotiier is not around to botherus. However, for those who are easily bothered - or at least distracted -the Olympics will be the sporting feature of 1984. Undoubtedly, all elsew i l l b e g i v e n a l o w e r p r i o r i t y.

Since knowledge is education, it is imperative to stand head andshoulders above those baseball and football buffs whose trivia seem todominate sports quizzes as though there were no other sports. Granted, when one is five-eight or less this may present a problem. Regardless -onv/ard. In the year of 1984 will you be able to meet the task or is somehomework in order? Test yourself on past Olympics.

Our immediate areas of attention-are the nev;s let ter and membership, though not necessar i ly in that order.

Our goal is to issue Taconic Running Life on a. bimonthly basis, but at leastQuarterly. Most people seem to feel that the newsletter is the most well receive-:item of membership. Melanie Mulvihill, Bob Bergin, Ov;en I-fc Crudden have agreed "cochip in v;ith an article. Along v/ith the President's corner and race reports thereseems to be enough substance to go around. We would expect and encourage lettersfrom the membership, positive or negative. The newsletter v/ill be there in '84!

Jerry Taub is nov; heading up our newly formed membership committee. It issorely needed. Too many nev; members v;ere waiting too long to receive their mem-berhsip cards and be added to the mailing list. That has been corrected by extending those slighted an extended mebership starting last month. On the other sideof the coin some forty memberships have alreadi'" passed and are still being carriedon the mailing list. (Please check your address label, all renewals appreciated.)Lapsed memberships renev/ed this month will be carried until December of next year.

Disturbingly there are too many nonrenev/als, most of \ /hich occur through proc r a s t i n a t i o n a n d f a i l u r e o n o u r p a r t t o r e m i n d p e o p l e i n a n a p p r o p r i a t e m a n n e r .Jerry and his crev; v/ill also pursue this problem avenue. THE I-IARINE CORPS MARATHON - A Nev/ York Alternative by Melanie Mulvihill

Washington D.C. 's I lar ine Corps marathon presents an excel lent al ternative to Nev; York for those looking for a change of race, v/hether bychoice or rejection. The course is similarly flat though aestheticallymore scenic than New York. However, it lacks the energy and spirit thatsole ly belongs to the Big Apple.

In the interest of accurate reporting I ran the first sixteen miles.(Since it followed New York by tv;o weeks it was also in the interest ofselfpreservation: I wasn't quite ready for another 26.2). From an hist o r i c v i e v ; p o i n t i t i s m a g n i fi c e n t .

The start circles the, "Crystal City," area and winds around thePentagon, past Arlington Cemetry, over Francis Scott Key Bridge, intohistoric Georgetown. The JFIC Center and Watergate Motel provoke memories.(Remember?) After a half-circle around the Lincoln Memorial the runnerstravel up Constitution Avenue past the Washington Monument.

Through Hains Point, along the Potomac, around the Tidal Basin, and beyond Jefferson's Memorial, the ever constant reminder of our heritage is v/ith us. A two mile straightawaj'" brings one into the finishwhich, incidentally, has a HILL at the 25 and 3/4 mile mark! Leave itt o t h e m a r i n e s .

There is something very uplifting during that finishing phase. Asyou catch a gl impse of Old Glory over the treetops there is a sense ofnationalist ic pride, further upli f ted in the final two tenths as the IwoJima Monument comes into full viev;. Trite as it may sound, it is an extremely moving sight, intensified by the normal emotion one feels v/henfinishing a long, long run. (I know, last year I did i t .)

While the spectators are smaller and more scattered than Nev; York,t h e y a r e , n e v e r t h e l e s s , e v e r y b i t a s e n t h u s i a s t i c . T h e r e a r e n i n e a i dstations and sufficient water. The crew cut, serious, young men manningthe v;ater stations give the race a very, military, controlled atmosphere,but, somehov;, their presence is comforting and reassuring.

Ironically, for the first time in the race's history the event v;asv;on by a marine, a naturalized citizen, born in, of all places, Grenada. Our ovm Jerry Taub gave pursuit to the tune of a 3:14 PR. Sherman Tai-shoff clocked 3:29 while Gregg Smith (3:35) and Barry Zawel(3:45) notonly ran for the second successive year, but competed in the Big Apple,t o o . *

FELLOW RUNNERS:

This is to advise you of a new and exciting prospect which may opento the TACONIC ROAD RUNNING CLUB. Please read on, and give this matter yours e r i o u s c o n s i d e r a t i o n .

It has recently come to our attention that the premises previously knownas the Hideaway, Mahopac, NY, is for sale at what may be an extremely reasonableprice. The former "watering hole" is located on Baldwin Place Road, approximately200 yards south of Mahopac High School.

Initial inspections have suggested great potential for use as a TRRC clubhouse and running center.

Such an undertaking, obviously, is one which cannot be taken lightly.Without unanimous support from membership, it would be fool hearty to even entertain such an ambitious venture. Time and money (lots of it) will be required.Actual participation by members not previously called upon will be essential.

An informal Steering Committee has been formed to explore the opportunity. On Sunday morning, January 22., a program has been scheduled in which they willdetail their findings to date. The order of business will be as follows:

8:30 A.M. - lOK run to explore the neighborhood(starting at the "clubhouse").

10:00 A.M. - Inspection of the premises. (Dresswarm - heat will not be on).

11:00 A.M. - General meeting at Lantern Pub.(Coffee and Doughnuts).

UNLESS WIDESPREAD SUPPORT IS SHOWN ON THE 22ND, THE COMMITTEEWILL RECOMMEND AGAINST PROCEEDING FURTHER PLEASE ATTEND!
