    The radio is heard during what seems to be the climax duringan episode of Rin Tin Tin

    ACTOR #1 (O.S.)

    Its Rinnie! Its Rin Tin Tin!

    ACTOR #2There just no way it could be him.

    ACTOR #1Here Rinnie! Here boy!

    FADE IN:

    INT. SUBURBAN HOME - NIGHT, 1932

    As the radio show continues, a montage of photographs aroundthe home during birthdays, a vacation, Christmases amongother activities, of a family of four. A husband, a wife, ayoung girl and a young boy around the ages of 7 and 9.

    After the montage ends we see the two children from thephotographs, RUTH and JACK are playing a game of Sorry withthe radio resting right beside them. The show continues toplay as the children see steam begin to rise from thekitchen. A recognizable scent fills the air. A smile lightsup their face

    ALICE, their mother is in the kitchen busily preparingdinner. Her dress and hairstyle almost emulate Clara Bow toperfection. She is in her early 30s and visibly exhaustedfrom preparing dinner. She begins taking out plates andsilverware and sets them around the kitchen table. She goesto take out a fourth plate but reluctantly changes her mind.She carefully serves each plate a piece of food withvegetables. She hurries into the living room

    ALICERuth, Jack, dinners ready! Go get

    washed up.JACK

    Cant we have ten more minutes?

    ALICETen more minutes? Do you have anyidea what time it is? Its ten toeight!

    And besides, an hour ago you twosounded so hungry you could haveeaten the food raw.

    RUTHWe want to wait for dad!

    ALICEHoney, weve talked about this, youknow how late your father works.Heaven knows what time hell gethome tonight. Now if you two donteat now, then itll it just bestraight off to bed with both ofyou. Now please go get washed up.

    The children reluctantly get up and begin to walk towards thekitchen. Jack shuts off the radio.

    Alice begins to clean up the board game left on the floorwhen she turns and notices a record resting next to the tablestand. She smiles and picks it up, keeping the title awayfrom the camera.

    ALICE (CONTD)Did I ever tell you your father waslate to our own wedding?

    The children turn around. Alice takes the record out of itssleeve and places it on top of the record player. She gentlyplaces the needle down and flips the switch. Whispering byPaul Whiteman begins to play.

    ALICE (CONTD)It got so late, We almost had tohave Grandpa Max fill in.

    The children walk back to Alice, laughing.

    ALICE (CONTD)We had our first dance together asa married couple to this song. Itfelt like we were on the top of theworld and no matter what happened,

    nothing could change it.RUTH

    I didnt know you and dad danced!

    ALICEWe had moves that could have madeFred Astaire quiver!

    She takes Jack by the hand and shows him how to dance. Sheshows Ruth a similar dance as the music begins to pick up.The children are now in hysterics laughing. The song ends andall three drop to the floor.

    The family hears the front door close. The children

    immediately jump up and run towards the door.

    Their father GEORGE walks into the living room. Hes roughlythe same age as his wife. Hes wearing a typical every daywork suit with a hat and coat. The children immediately leapat him. He walks towards Alice with both kids still attachedat the arms.

    GEORGEOkay, okay! Hold on a moment. SorryIm late dear.

    The children let go of his arms. He and Alice kiss. George

    takes off his hat and coat.

    JACKIts okay dad! Mom told us you wereso late once you almost missed yourwedding!

    Alice quickly silences Jack

    GEORGEOh she did? Turning my own childrenagainst me again I see?

    Alice laughs.

    GEORGE (CONTD)Alright, what smells so good rightnow?

    RUTHMom just finished cooking dinner!

    GEORGEShe did? Well why are we wastingtime here? Giddyap!

    George bends down to the childrens level. They jump backonto his arms laughing hysterically

    George drops the kids down onto their chairs. George sitsdown in his chair and notices his missing plate

    GEORGE (CONTD)Werent expecting a rare guest likeme tonight I see?

    GEORGEWhat? Didnt show up? What do youmean she didnt show up? Whathappened?

    RUTH

    Well after the bell rang, we waitedand waited. Finally the teacherdown the hall Mrs. Gresham found usand taught us with her class.

    ALICENo one knows what happened. Thepolice have been looking for herall day.

    GEORGE(softly)

    Alice, isnt she the one who

    married...

    Alice quickly silences George

    ALICEYes it is.

    GEORGEWell, lets hope shes alright.

    JACKAfter school, mom let me go over toScotts house down the street.

    GEORGEOh thats nice

    JACKSince his father lost his job hewont be able to afford to livehere anymore.

    The sentence in particular strikes a nerve with George.

    GEORGE

    Oh....Im sorry to hear thatRUTH

    How was your day daddy?

    GEORGEThanks for asking sweetie. Justanother busy boring day at theoffice.

    JACKScotts dad said you got him fired

    GEORGEDont you believe a word of whathis dad says!

    JACKYes sir. But why would his dad saythat?

    GEORGEYou know how hard times are nowson. Me and Scotts father workedin the same office writing for thepaper for years. Our boss couldonly afford to keep one of us. Mycolumn was just a little morepopular than his. The nerve of him

    trying to brain wash my own goddamn son.

    Alice quickly interrupts George

    ALICEThis is a perfect example of why wehave you two count your blessingseach night. Luckily for you, yourfather still has his job, but whoknows what will happen next?

    RUTH

    But what happens if he loses hisjob? Teacher told us...

    GEORGERuth we have no way of knowing whathappens but all I can promise youis this. No matter what happens, nomatter where we go, no matter howwe get there, we will always havethe most important necessity. Eachother. Dont ever let any friend orteacher tell you differently. Do

    you understand?RUTH

    Yes sir.

    JACKYes sir.

    GEORGEGood. Now, you two go get washed upfor bed. Me and your mother will bein to say good night soon.

    The children get up and leave the kitchen. Ruth walks back in

    and hugs George and Alice before leaving again.

    Alice begins to clean up the table.

    ALICEWell look at you Mr. Father of theyear! How long have you beenrehearsing that speech?

    GEORGEFar longer than you can everimagine.

    They both laugh. Silence quickly falls over the two.

    ALICEGeorge, I hate to bring this up,but you know how I feel about whenyou lose you temper in front of thechildren.

    GEORGELose my temper? How can youpossibly blame me for losing mytemper Alice? You heard all thelies Earl tried to spread to our

    son! If anything, Im not angryenough!

    ALICEBut that doesnt mean in the fewshort hours you see them every dayyou have to try to make our son asupset as you are.

    GEORGEI guess you have a point. Ill havea talk with him.

    ALICEThats all I ever wanted.

    RUTH (O.S.)Mom!

    ALICEIll go take care of it.

    Alice hurries out of the kitchen. George follows after her.He walks upstairs into Jacks room.

    GEORGEGot a minute son?

    JACKSure dad!

    George sits down on the bed

    GEORGEI want you to promise me to forgetall of the things I said earlierabout Scotts father.

    JACKWhat do you mean forget it?

    GEORGEI cant begin to imagine how itmust feel to be in his shoes rightnow. Nor do I ever want to. Peoplesay stupid things in the heat ofthe moment. We just have to forgiveand forget. You understand what Imean?

    JACKYes sir.

    GEORGE

    Atta boy. Good night son.

    JACKNight dad.

    George leaves the room. He heads downstairs where Alice issitting on the living room couch listening to the radio andfolding clothing.

    ALICEI finally put Ruth to bed. How dideverything go upstairs with Jack?

    GEORGE(sarcastic)

    Everything went fine. No need toworry when you have Mr. Father ofthe year over here.

    ALICEHar har very funny mister.

    ALICEYoure trying to mock me but itwont work this time!

    GEORGEIt wont? I guess Ill just have totry harder then

    Alice smiles. A show on the radio begins. The Intro musicstarts to play

    ANNOUNCER (V.O.)The Craft Music Hall starring BingCrosby! Tonights special guests

    include Ethel Merman and RuthEtting! Now heres your host, Bing!

    Bing Crosby begins to sing

    ALICEOh I just love this show honey!

    GEORGEHow can I ever forget?

    They kiss

    ALICEI cant even imagine what I woulddo if I ever met him or EthelMerman in real life. I would killjust be her for a day.

    GEORGEI know what Id do if you wereEthel Merman.

    ALICEHey! Watch it buster

    GEORGEWatch what?

    ALICEWatch your mouth or youll besleeping on the floor tonight.

    The song All Of Me by Ruth Etting begins to play. Georgesmiles. He jumps off the couch and takes Alice to the centerof the room. They dance to the music. A distraught looksuddenly appears on Alices face. She stops dancing and turnsoff the radio.

    GEORGEI thought you wanted to listen tothat.

    ALICEI need to talk to you about Ruthsteacher

    GEORGEWhy? Have the police said anything?

    ALICESweetie, I didnt tell the children

    because I didnt want to frightenthem but the police found her bodynear Springfield pond this morning.

    GEORGEWhat!? What do you mean they foundher body?

    ALICEI found out after I walked thechildren to school. It may havebeen a retaliation for herhusbands work.

    GEORGEYou should have told me.

    ALICEI didnt even know what to tell thechildren! They already saw thepolicemen talking to other teachersat school so I couldnt justpretend nothing was wrong. Ipanicked.

    GEORGEIts better if she hears it fromyou and I instead of from herprincipal.

    ALICEI know. Ill have to tell she andJack tomorrow when they wake up.

    GEORGEAlright.

    ALICEI think we should head up to bednow.

    Alice raises from the couch but George gently pulls her backdown onto his lap.

    GEORGEPlease stay with me Alice.

    George turns on the radio

    ALICEGeorge....

    GEORGE

    Please,

    She and George gaze at the fire-pit as the music plays.

    ANNOUNCERYou may remember our next guestfrom her big hit in....

    A loud knock is heard at the door. George quickly jumps outof his chair.

    GEORGEWho on earth could be here at this

    hour?

    George opens the door but sees no one. He notices a smallenvelope resting under the doormat. George looks aroundbefore he picks up the letter and closes the door.

    ALICEWho was it dear?

    GEORGE

    I havent the slightest clue, itjust seems to be a letter.

    ALICEWell, are you going to open it?

    George goes into the kitchen and returns with a letteropener. He cuts the letter open.

    GEORGEYou dont know who this is, butbelieve me I know you. I also knowyou are in danger.

    Georges tone becomes serious as the color from his facebegins to fade. Alice raises from her seat.

    ALICEDanger? What do you mean danger!?

    GEORGEThey know where you live they knowwhere you work, they know where youpray, they know where your childrenlearn, where you eat, where yousleep and will not stop. Pleasebelieve me when I say this but

    leave now, for they are coming.

    ALICEGeorge, who sent this!?

    GEORGEIt isnt marked.

    Alice sits down onto the couch in panic

    GEORGE (CONTD)Ill phone the police. Dont worryeverythings alright.

    George hurries towards the kitchen as a mysterious car pullsup in front of the house. Alice hears the breaks of the carand turns around. Bullets begin ripping through the windowslike paper. Pictures are destroyed, Furniture is torn up asAlice quickly dives on the floor. At the top of her lungsAlice begins to scream

    ALICEGEORGE!

    From her point of view George is no where to be seen. Bullets

    continue to rip through the house at a seemingly never-endingrate. Pictures and decorations continue to shatter by thesecond.

    We see George huddled near the couch, unable to see Alice buthears her screams for help

    GEORGEALICE!

    George walks through the office as more people stop towelcome him back. He arrives in his office and sits down. Hetakes out his briefcase and begins to start his day.

    A knock at his door. Before George is able to respond, hisboss Roy enters his office.

    ROYWell will you look at this. Mr.George Staller finally comes backto work!

    GEORGEWell it feels good to be back sir.Thank you again for letting me takethe time to focus on my family.

    ROYWell Im sure it cant be easy on

    them. How are the little onesholding up.

    GEORGEWell Its been tough of course. Thefirst few nights especially. Butbesides being a little shaken up. Ithink theyll be alright

    ROYWhat about Alice? How is she?

    GEORGE

    Shes probably taking it thehardest out of all of us. Shedidnt even want me coming heretoday. But I think us staying withPhil Davis and his family hasreally put her at ease a littlebit.

    ROYPhil Davis? As In Lieutenant PhilDavis?

    GEORGEOh yes, me and him go way back toour youth. He came over the minutehe found out what happened. AndBetween his kids and our kids itfeels like some sort of party tothem.

    GEORGEThats all that really matters to

    me right now

    ROYYoure a good man George. Dont letany stupid letter or anything elsetell you otherwise. This is just abump in the road.

    GEORGEThank you sir. I really appreciatethat.

    ROY

    Ill let you get back to work.Dont hesitate to ask if you needanything.

    GEORGEI will sir.

    Roy leaves the office. George takes out a fresh piece ofpaper and writes.

    CUT TO:

    GEORGES OFFICE - EVENING

    George hasnt seemed to move an inch since his boss left. Heis clearly exhausted and stressed based on his body language.Hes one of the only people now left in his office. Acoworker knocks on his door and enters.

    FRANKJesus Georgy, are you still here?

    GEORGEHeh, yeah Frank, Im still here.

    FRANKYou know, youre the only guy Iknow that could be hard at workafter going through something likewhat you wen.....

    George looks up and gives him a glare

    GEORGEAlright. Thanks Frank. I owe youone.

    FRANKDont think anything of it. Now getout of here Im sure Alice isworried sick.

    George puts on his hat and coat

    GEORGEIm sure she is. See ya tomorrow.

    EXT. OFFICE BUILDING - MOMENTS LATER

    George takes out his pocket watch and begins to run towardsthe bus stop.

    I/E. DAVIS FAMILY HOME - LATER

    No lights are on. Its clear everyone in the home is asleep.George enters the house. He kisses Alice on her head andwalks upstairs into the childrens bedroom. George begins to

    tear up as he watches his children sleep. He walks backdownstairs.

    ALICE(Softly)

    George? Is that you?

    GEORGEHi sweetheart.

    ALICEDo you have any idea what time it

    is? What kept you?GEORGE

    I had to finish some business atthe office. Im sorry.

    ALICEHoney, you dont need to be thereright now. Where you need to be ishere with your children.

    They need you more than any of us.Do you know how much Ruth cries atnight without you? You seemed moreconcerned to getting back to workmore than anything!

    GEORGEYou dont think Im concerned? Ourhouse looks like it was put througha god damn cheese grater Alice! Doyou know how many sleepless nightsI have had all week? Thinking aboutwhat could happen if I couldntever protect you three? Do you knowwhy im working so hard right now?Im working to help fix the house!So I think I may deserve just alittle bit of gratitude!

    ALICE(distraught)

    Oh George

    Alice walks into the kitchen crying. George, visiblyflustered storms out of the house and onto the porch. He sitsand thinks. Phil Davis comes outside soon after

    PHILEverything alright Georgy?

    GEORGEOh... Yeah everythings fine. Im

    sorry if we scared you or Nancy.

    PHILNancys still asleep dont worryabout her. Listen, why dont youtell me everything over a round ofbooze at the Red Oyster

    GEORGEDo you know what time it is?

    PHIL

    Of course I do. Come on lets gobefore the wives find out weregone.

    George looks into the living room through the window and seesAlice fast asleep again.

    PHILTheres the old George!

    INT. RED OYSTER - LATER

    George and Phil arrive at the Red Oyster, an old jazz clubfilled with people drowning their sorrows over loss jobs andfamilies. a band is performing various songs on stage. Theyenter the club and sit down at the bar.

    BARTENDERWhatll it be Phil?

    PHILJust a round of anything you got ontap.

    BARTENDER

    Comin right up lieutenant.

    GEORGEDamn Phil, they just about worshipyou here.

    PHILJust one of the perks of my job. Sois everything alright between youan Alice?

    GEORGEOh you know, typical things.

    Worried im not spending enoughtime with the family mostly, I kindof went off on her a bit more thanI should have I suppose.

    PHILNobodys perfect George, sometimesyou gotta yell to get your pointacross. Look at me and the Mrs. Icant tell you how often we yell.We turned out just fine.

    GEORGEMaybe.

    The bartender brings over two mugs.

    PHILSo what else is bothering you?

    GEORGEBesides the fact we still haventcaught the guys yet? Sorry i didntmean to sound sarcastic. Its justeating at me day by day. The imageof my children hiding for their

    lives under their beds, the imageof Alice on the floor. Im goingcrazy Phil.

    George starts to tear up

    PHILGeorge, I promise you, well findthem. Listen, why dont you takethe day off tomorrow? Youve beenback to work one day and yourealready a mess.

    GEORGENo, I cant Phil, I got to get...

    PHILGeorge, youre not going. I cantlet you go in your frame of mindright now. Thats final.

    GEORGEAlright Phil, I will take it easy

    George take another slug of his beer. Suddenly a crash isheard. George and Phil quickly turn around to see Earl. The

    father of Jacks friend and Georges former co-worker. He isclearly drunk and has been for a good few hours. His clothesare dirty and torn.

    EARLI knew that was you! Ol Georgyboy!

    GEORGEListen here Earl. I have nothing tosay to you right now. I have morethings to worry about than a

    drunken buffoon.EARL

    A drunken buff... Buffoon? Is thatany way to talk to the guy who gotyou where you a... Are?

    GEORGEWhat the hell is the supposed tomean?

    Phil stands up to intervene

    GEORGE (CONTD)No Phil let him talk.

    EARLWho was the one that actually gotyou into the busin.. Business? Andwhat do I get in return? Everythingtaken from me no thanks to you! Youtook my life, you took my home, youtook my job. In some ways I wasactually happy to see someonedestroy your precious home.

    George suddenly throws a punch and knocks Earl clean on hisback. The entire bar is now silent, staring at theconfrontation.

    GEORGEGet the hell out of here and getback to your god damn kid!

    PHILWhat is everyone looking at? Getback to whatever the hell you weredoing! Now!

    George walks away from Earl. Earl begins to stir. He finallymanages to get back onto his feet and take out a switchbladeout of his pocket. As he turns around, he is immediately metwith a left hook to the face from a mysterious stranger thatknocks him out cold.

    PHIL (CONTD)Jesus George are you alright?

    GEORGEYeah, Im fine. Sir.... Thank You

    so much. How can I repay you?MYSTERIOUS STRANGER

    (Cold)Dont worry about it.

    GEORGEWell at least tell me your name.

    The mysterious stranger remains quiet.

    GEORGE (CONTD)Well heres a token of myappreciation.

    He hands him two dollars and leaves with Phil.

    INT. PHILS CAR. - MOMENTS LATER

    George and Phil are in the car on their way back home.

    PHILJesus George, I never thought youdhave it in you to go out and hitsomeone like that!

    George is quiet. Almost ashamed of himself.

    GEORGE

    I just want to get some rest andforget everything.

    INT. DAVIS FAMILY HOME - LATER

    George and Phil arrive home. Phil goes upstairs. George goesstraight to the couch where Alice is sleeping and hugs her.

    INT .NEWSPAPER COMPANY-GEORGES OFFICE - THE NEXT DAY

    A secretary knocks on Georges door with a cup of coffee.

    After hearing no response.

    SECRETARY #1Mr. Staller? Could I interest youin a cup of...

    She drops the cup which shatters on the ground. A look ofhorror appears on her face as she begins to scream at the topof her lungs. We finally see what she saw. Georges co workerFrank shot dead in Georges chair.

    INT. DAVIS FAMILY HOME - LATERGeorge is awoken by Alice who is almost in tears.

    GEORGEAlice? Whats wrong?

    ALICEYour your boss just called.

    ALICEHoney, Frank Barns was killedinside your office last night.

    George turns pale as a ghost

    GEORGEWhat? Thats impossible.... I Justsaw him last night. He Offered toclean up for me.

    ALICEPhil is waiting at the station withsome officers. They just want toask you a few questions.

    GEORGEOk.... Ill go right now.

    George kisses Alice and leaves.

    INT. WESTFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT - LATER

    George walks through the doors and up to the front desk

    GEORGEHi, Im George Staller. LieutenantDavis asked me to come down.

    PHIL (O.S.)George! In here.

    George walks into the room.

    PHIL (CONTD)Have a seat.

    George sits at the table across from Phil and two detectives.

    DETECTIVE #1

    Hello George, Im detectiveCarlson, this is detective Parker

    GEORGEHello detectives.

    DETECTIVE PARKERGeorge, wed like to ask you a fewquestions about what happened lastnight at The Red Oyster?

    GEORGEWait... At the bar? What do youmean what happened at the bar? Ithought you brought me here to...

    PHIL

    George just answer the question.They just want to verify.

    GEORGEWell, after a spat with the MrsLast night, the lieutenant and Iwent to the bar around 11 PM whichis right down the block from theoffice.

    DETECTIVE PARKERWe understand there was aconfrontation between yourself a

    Mr. Earl Porter?

    GEORGEWell yes, but I dont see what thiscould possibly have to do withFrank.

    DETECTIVE CARLSONCan you tell us more about thefight?

    GEORGEIm not in trouble am I?

    DETECTIVE PARKERMr. Staller, please just answer thequestion.

    GEORGENot long after we arrived, I wasconfronted by Earl who seemed to bepretty drunk at the time. After hespouted off about his problems, andbeing happy about my familysrecent incident I lost it and

    punched him in the mouth.DETECTIVE PARKER

    What happened afterwards?

    GEORGEAs me and Lieutenant Davis wereleaving, Earl attempted to attackwith some sort of knife.

    A man who was sitting next to ustook him down before he had anychance to attack. I thanked the manand went home.

    A long uncomfortable pause as the detectives whisper to one

    another inaudibly. Finally Detective Carlson speaks.

    DETECTIVE CARLSONGeorge, did you happen to recognizewho the man was?

    GEORGEWell, no I didnt. It happened sofast I didnt even think of it.

    PHILGeorge, we have reason to believethe man at the bar last night was

    Arthur Gallo. The gangster, who webelieve is responsible for thedeath of Frank Barnes.

    GEORGEWhat!? What makes you say that?

    PHILI recognized him at the bar. Idecided not to say anything afterhe helped you.

    DETECTIVE PARKER

    We have witnesses who have comeforward corroborating that they sawMr. Gallo leaving your office aswell.

    GEORGEWell, great at least you know whothe son of a bitch is!

    PHILTheres more George. We alsobelieve hes responsible for your

    home shooting.George slumps down into his chair as if he is going to faint.

    PHIL (CONTD)The bullets match the ones foundat your home.

    INT. GEORGES CAE - MOMENTS LATER

    George is driving back to the house. he looks into hisrearview mirror and sees a police car following close behind.

    GEORGEI think I may just lose my fuckingmind soon.

    I/E. DAVIS FAMILY HOME - CONTINUOUS

    George pulls into the driveway and notices the door wideopen. He gets out of the car and hears a scream coming fromthe home. He bolts out of the car and bursts into the home.His wife and daughter are in tears. The upper back of Ruthsdress torn off. Large scratch marks on her back. Alice isholding her close to her as Ruth continues to sob hystericalinto her mothers arms. George drops to his knees. Unable tocomprehend what he has witnessed. He rushes over to hisdaughter. Two officers who followed George home burst in.

    INT. HOSPITAL - EVENING
