Over time, the combination of heat and voltage may break down the unsulation between the windings, coil housing or tower. The coil’s primary and secondary resistance can be measured with an ohmmeter. If either if out of specification the cpil needs to be replaced.Common Faults with VAG Pencil Coils1) A short or low resistance in the coil’s secondary windings will result in a weak spark2) An open or high resistance in the coil’s secondary windings will also cause a weak or no spark3)When the coil fired, the high voltage surge it it cannot get to the spark plug, will find the path of least resistance to exit including through the body of the coil and so “arcing” the coil.
