How does literacy develop?

“Reading readiness” … there are certain skills that kids need to develop before they can learn to read and write.

Emergent Literacy: Literacy develops through a variety of experiences with reading and writing, beginning at birth.

Two year old Taylor sees a McDonalds coffee cup and says, “Daddy, I want some french fries.”

Three year old Noah points to the writing on his lunchbox (his name is written on it) and says, “This says, my lunchbox.”

By the time kids enter school, they usually have some idea of how written language is used in their worlds and they are beginning to make discoveries about print concepts.

what does it encompass? (look in the summary!) How does literacy develop? What is phonemic awareness and why is it

important? What is inventive spelling? What are concrete words? How should you teach letter names and sounds? Discuss the activities described in the chapter
