PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen
Lament for StringsFrank Bridgeb. Brighton, England / February 26, 1879d. Friston, Sussex / January 10, 1941Composed: 1915First WSO performance
Best known as the influentialteacher of composerBenjamin Britten (from age13), Frank Bridge has becomeknown for music that is
beautifully crafted inside a distinctiveimpressionistic framework, often recallingRavel but also containing dustings of thepeculiarly exotic style of Frederick Delius inits use of small motives synthesized to exoticharmonies and yearning expression.
Lament was composed as an elegy to a 9-year-old girl named Catherine who, withher family, perished on May 7, 1915 when aGerman U-Boat sank the civilian ocean linerRMS Lusitania in the Atlantic. 1,195 peoplewere lost and the incident caused aninternational furor. The family had beenfriends of Bridge’s, and this darkly beautifulwork for strings became an outlet for hispersonal anguish, whose pacifism was drivenby the loss of family and friends during thisperiod. The constant motion and resolutionsof the music’s rising and falling two-notefigures make for an intensely affectingtribute.
Violin ConcertoBenjamin Brittenb. Lowestoft, England / November 22, 1913d. Aldeburgh / December 4, 1976Composed: 1938-1939First performance: March 29, 1940 (New York), John Barbirolli, conductor;Antonio Brosa, soloistFirst WSO performance
As with his teacher FrankBridge, Benjamin Brittenwas a committed pacifist.Following Hitler’sannexation of
Czechoslovakia in March of 1939, thusending Neville Chamberlain’s declarationof “peace for our time,”the 26-year-oldBritten followed his friends, poet W.H.Auden and novelist ChristopherIsherwood to America to avoid the
coming war and find a fresh artisticstart. With Britten was his life-longpartner, tenor Peter Pears. Settling inBrooklyn and Amityville, Long Island, the two would return to Englandthree years later.
A Canadian connection was made, since Britten and Pears entered theUnited States through Toronto as“legal British immigrants”to facilitatethe move. Britten had successfullypremiered his Piano Concerto at theLondon Proms in August 1938 andfelt confident that a new ViolinConcerto should be his next effort. He arrived in Toronto in May withsketches and it was there that heworked on the Violin Concerto, followed by more work on it inAmityville over the summer. Brittenfinished the Concerto while onvacation in Quebec in September.Writing to his publisher he said:“Sofar it is without question my bestpiece. It is rather serious, I’m afraid –but it’s got some tunes in it!”
The premiere went to Britten’s friendand fellow Frank Bridge student,Spanish violinist Antonio Brosa, whohad also immigrated to the UnitedStates with war looming in Europe.
With the New York Philharmonic ledby John Barbirolli on March 28, 1940,it received mixed reviews but theAmerican composer Elliott Carterwas most impressed with the “sizeand ambition”of Britten’s talent.
The noble opening movementbegins with a distinctive motive onthe timpani which serves as a mottothroughout the movement.Thesoloist enters with a melody of shortdropping phrases. Roles reverse lateron, and the movement ends inhaunting fashion.
The second movement beginswithout pause – a sinister scherzowith a more relaxed centerpiece. Then, a searching cadenza thatrecalls the opening movement.Thefinale is a passacaglia, an ancientBaroque variation form whoserepeating bass line is first heard inthe trombones. An intense dialoguewith the soloist ensues, traversingnine emotionally charged variationsthrough a range of striking episodes.
Le Tombeau de CouperinMaurice Ravelb. Ciboure, France / March 7, 1875d. Paris, France / December 28, 1937Composed: 1917 for piano;orchestrated in 1920First performance: February 28,1920 (Paris), Rhené-Baton,conductorLast WSO performance: 2013;Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor
Ravel’s emotional statewas turbulent in 1917.Anguished by the FirstWorld War andshocked by the final
illness and death of his mother, Ravelturned to what had always been anantidote for him during difficulttimes, the emotional and intellectualcomfort of French culture andtradition.
The original piano setting of LeTombeau de Couperin combined adedication of each movement to oneof Ravel’s friends that had fallen onthe battlefield, with a look-back tothe musical style of the FrenchBaroque era. Composer FrançoisCouperin (1668-1733) had producedmusic in memory of friends, giving itthe name “tombeau”(tombstone). This too became Ravel’s path.
Highly engaging in its charm, onewould not suspect that Le Tombeaude Couperin is a work springing fromany kind of personal turmoil, especially in the orchestral version.Though the music’s fragrantharmonies and vivid orchestrationshow a modern face, the rhythmicelements and phrase repetitionsrecall Baroque dances of Couperin’sage.
The oboe leads off in the openingPrélude, soon drawing thewoodwinds along to join itsshimmering line. Forlane is based onan Italian dance reputedly madepopular by Venetian gondoliers.Menuet is a signature Baroquedance. Ravel’s is of childlike simplicity. The rousing Rigaudon closes thesuite, the music’s lively duple-metered rhythms recalling theoriginal hopping dance moves foundin Provence during Louis XIV’s time.

Symphony No. 9Dmitri Shostakovichb. St Petersburg, Russia / September 25, 1906d. Moscow / August 9, 1975Composed: 1945First performance: November 3, 1945(Leningrad), Yevgeny Mravinsky, conductor Last WSO performance: 2011, DmitrySitkovetsky, conductor
Begun in 1941, Shostakovich’slarge-scale Symphony No. 7reflects the siege of Leningrad,a Leningrad “Stalin destroyedand Hitler finished off,”the
composer wrote in Testimony.
Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8(1943) became a profoundly tragicand epic depiction of massiveconflict and the war’sconsequences. With victory overHitler’s Nazis in 1945, the resultingexpectation for Russia’s greatestcomposer was to provide a suitablymonumental symphony to glorifyStalin in no uncertain terms, regardless of the terrible losses ofthe Russian people. After all,Beethoven and Mahler wroteauspicious Ninth symphonies. Sotoo here, but with a more significantdedication, the politburo felt.
Shostakovich did attempt an epic firstmovement but abandoned it,observing Stalin “like a frog puffinghimself up to the size of the ox.Everyone praised Stalin, and now I wassupposed to join in this unholy affair.”
Shostakovich’s response was a farmore compact symphony in the newNinth – full of biting wit, economy ofgesture and pointed barbs of angerunder its surface. The work was one ofthe main reasons Shostakovich wastargeted as an Enemy of the Peopleduring Stalin’s second wave ofrepression in 1948.

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen
MessiahGeorge Frideric Handelb. Halle, Prussia / February 23, 1685d. London, England / April 14, 1759Composed: 1741. First performance:1742 (Dublin).
The mostcelebratedoratorio of alltime, Messiahelicits almost aninvoluntaryresponse of
recognition at the mere mention of its name. It is the most loved of alloratorios and for all their estimablemerits, neither the Passions of Bachnor Haydn’s Creation rival Messiah’spopularity, though Mendelssohn’sElijah was, in the 19-century,considered its equal.
One feels the urge to want to sing aswith no other work of its genre, asimperial melody, invention and visionare presented with the matchlessproportion of a theatrical master. Andfor the gift of Messiah, we literallyhave to thank inches, when, as ayoung man, Handel’s life was savedafter a metal frock button deflected asword point in a duel!
Yet for all the visionary qualities in themusic’s progression from dark to light, the dramatic strength of Messiahcomes not from telling a story.Handel’s theatrical background wasinbred when he composed Messiah, but his priority was contemplation ofthe sacred rather than the dramatic.“Ishould be sorry if I only entertainedthem,”Handel told an admirer.“Iwished to make them better.”
Messiah is an anomaly amongHandel’s two dozen oratorios in that, apart from Israel in Egypt, its entiretext is drawn from the Bible and is hisonly oratorio based on the NewTestament. Messiah was also the onlyoratorio presented in a consecratedspace during his lifetime. Notintended as part of a devotionalservice, Handel intended it as amiddle-class entertainment withpious leanings and just a stepremoved from the Italian operaticstyle ventures he had been havingsuccess with as London’s leadingcomposer, impresario and producerof opera.
But in 1740, Handel was havingtrouble keeping such venturessolvent. English public taste wasmoving away from continentalinfluences towards more localizedentertainments, spurred on by thesuccess of the 1728 satirical romp TheBeggar’s Opera by Gay and Pepusch.Rumors abounded that Handel wasfinished.
Handel withdrew from public life inthe early months of 1741 and seldomventured out. But that summer, hecame across a small book of Biblicaltexts assembled by Charles Jennens, awealthy and pretentious type but agreat admirer of the composer.Handel’s imagination lit up.
Rumor has it that Handel confinedhimself to his room, completingMessiah on September 14, 1741 injust over three weeks, but evidenceshows that the Lord Lieutenant ofDublin had visited Handel early in1741 to propose a new work for aseries of Dublin charity concerts.
Handel traveled to Dublin thatNovember and after thedisappointments of London, tookmuch pleasure in beingenthusiastically received by theIrish press. Preparations for thepremiere went on throughout thewinter of 1742. Choristers wererecruited from Dublin churchesand excitement elevated to feverpitch.
The premiere on April 13th 1742was a triumph. Handel couldn’twait to take it home to London.
In London however, it was felt thatMessiah’s texts would becompromised by performances intheatres propagated by actors ofquestionable morals. Messiahreceived a few subsequentperformances but had to waituntil more liberal times arrived in1750 when Handel staged aperformance to benefit London’sFoundling Hospital, a charity forabandoned children.
Such good will further ensuredMessiah’s success, inspiring annualperformances for the FoundlingHospital up until Handel’s deathin 1759. It was the last workHandel directed, just eight daysbefore his death and is the onlymajor Baroque work that has anunbroken performance traditionfrom the time of its creation tothe present day.

great composers to obscure Irish folk, Matthewalong with all his siblings was born to sing.
His classical training started in the Sisters ofMercy convent in Kells, Co.Meath, aged 10, andprogressed to some of the great Irish andScottish teachers. Although he ventured intoopera and classical singing, Matthew never losthis love for the music of his youth, in particularthe vibrant contemporary Irish music, which is hisgreat source of inspiration.
Matthew's busy singing life ran in parallel with hisengineering career, but his desire to sing was toostrong. So in 1997, he decided to take a six-monthsabbatical from engineering and embarked on hissinging career. John Baron is in his seventh year teachingwith Sistema Winnipeg. Working out ofElwick School, John instructs three bassstudents and conducts both theBeethoven and Mozart orchestras, teaching over 40 students each year.
What have you found is the biggest impact of having a daily teacher withinSistema Winnipeg?
Students need structure. Students needrepetition. Students need consistency. All three of these things are in placewhen the students know that there willbe the same teacher there every singleday. It helps the students develop aroutine and gives them something theycan count on. I feel like it also helpsme just as much as it helps thekids. Getting to teach them everyday, I am able to developrelationships with the studentsand most importantly, trust. These are all difficultthings to build if ateacher is onlyaround a coupledays in a week. When I'mteaching as many kids as Ido, I need to have asmany of them on my sideas possible (haha).
Can you describe themusical growthyou’ve witnessedin your students?I've seen a lot ofstudents from
square one. The growth is incredible. It's hard to see in the thick of thingssometimes but when I've taken amoment to step back and think aboutwhere these students have comefrom, it's pretty amazing. From how tohold a violin to running their ownchamber groups and sight readingorchestral pieces ... that's thespectrum within the time I've beenwith Sistema Winnipeg.
What is your favourite part ofteaching within Sistema Winnipeg?
My favourite part ofteaching withinSistema Winnipeg is
getting to see studentsexperience success. Itdoesn't matter inwhat way or the sizeof the success. Theminute you see alightbulb go on intheir head, wherethey've connectedthe dots on aconcept or they provethemselves wrong bydoing something theythought they couldn'tdo, that's why I'm still
with the program.Getting to see thesestudents discover theirlove for music, itschallenges and itsrewards really makesthe job worth it.
An interview with Sistema Teacher, John Baron
What are you most looking forward to for thefuture of Sistema?
Sistema is a growing program. The students whostarted the first year it came to Winnipeg are nowin high school. They travel from their respectiveschools to rehearse and more importantly, tomentor the younger students. I believe this is thefuture of Sistema Winnipeg; a mentorship basedprogram where students are teaching otherstudents. This new chapter for Sistema Winnipegis very new and very exciting.
Sistema Winnipeg cannot existwithout your help. Please donateto keep this important programgoing. You may support theannual operations or the newlyestablished Sistema EndowmentFund.
