Rat infestation at Diamond Head Sands 3721 Kanaina St Honolulu? - Rodent problem plagues Rental Apartments in Hawaii

Rats infesting bushes, foliage, and scavenging garbage areas and dumpsters is causing problems in Hawaii for apartment renters as the rodents have been entering apartments via their balconies and lanais.

(The Diamond Head Sands is located 3721 Kanaina Street, Honolulu, Hawaii, near Monsarrat street, in the 96815 zip code area )

The problem can be quite concerning, because rats harbor disease. One disease present in Hawaii, mainly on the big island is rat lungworm disease. It is caused by a parasite. The parasite normally lives in local hawaiian snails, however the rats then eat the snails and now become infected with the Rat Lungworm Parasite. This parasitic worm can live in the rat, it can then be contracted by the droppings, or merely anything that the rat crawled over while in the apartment or on the lanai. The rat lungworm then can infect the brain in humans or children and cause brain and neurological problems lasting years or even decades.

Rats also perpetually urinate. Although it will be invisible to apartment owners rats continuously leave droplets of urine as they are foraging around. Since it is hundreds of tiny droplets and not one large pool or pile, the drop will evaporate and then be invisible to the human eye, however ones apartment or lanai can have a trail thousands of droplets of rat urine potentially containing germs or noxious substances. A renter may then touch it, then touch their face, nose, or mouth. There need not be any food or items on the lanai, a rat will merely wander and explore in its normal behavior. The main food source is primarily outdoor dumpsters, and any commercial buildings containing restaurants which constantly produce a daily food supply.

Rat traps and baits have been seen in the vicinity of Diamond Head Sands, at 3741 Kanaina Street and 3721 Kanaina street, two buildings, as well as near food shops located next to the apartments.

There is nothing apartment owners or renters can do presently as the rats are living outside the apartments and living outside on the property in and around the undergrowth, old leaves, and on the ground in crevices near mounds of earth or in the root systems of the property's foliage.

Renters are advised to use caution and not to touch or approach the rats on the property.
