In a Nutshell…

20

OpenStack is an Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud platform. (mostly) And what’s so great about IaaS? • By itself? Not much! • As one part of a transformed IT service delivery model? Potentially revolutionary!

IaaS Cloud: A Mass of Contradictions

21

• Cost • But we’re spending more

• “Agility” • But it’s massively disruptive

• Self-service • But compliance can be tricky

• Resource Pooling / Multitenancy • Again, compliance

• Elasticity • Within a more rigid framework

• Scalability • But we’re not quite there yet

“There’s a good reason two of these people look confused.”

No Magic Bullets

27

• Technology is easy; organizational change is hard. • Insufficient automation • IaaS abstraction unsuitable • Compliance issues • ? …but the market will have its say.

Other Deployment Tools Other deployment tools are based on RPM that include hundreds of packages. Some tools have a Web GUI but underneath are these packages with interdependencies. Any minor change in versions of OS or Storage or upgrade to a OpenStack service require changes in some packages and cause conflict with other packages that support the previous version but not the new version resulting into failure. As a result….. It takes Long time to deploy It is Difficult to upgrade With High risk and unforeseen downtime with changes Compare this with Deployment with Docker Containers With Docker containers you can package each service as an independent micro-service. These containers are self sufficient and do not have dependencies on other containers Configuration is loaded into the containers. When there is a change in configuration of a specific container you create a new container replacing the old container New containers are easy to create and replace old containers. No impact on other containers. It does not reconfigure anything else. Providing immutability and lowering risk As a result…..you get Simplified and Reliable deployment that is Easy to upgrade, operate and modify This slides shows you how the new architecture will work. There are effectively two inputs: inputs provided by Oracle and those the end-user will create as part of their installation. Step 1: Oracle builds Docker image files for the OpenStack services and their components needed by the customer for the OpenStack services, which customers will then download and install to a local Docker registry Step 2: The system administrator will need to download the Kolla-CLI from the Oracle Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) or the public yum repositories Step 3: The system administrator will use the Kolla-CLI as the tool for configuring the services, like Neutron, Nova, etc. All changes made by the system administrator will be stored in an ansible playbook. Step 4: The final step, after the system administrator configures the service will be to deploy the Docker container, which is also done using the Kolla-CLI

Putting it All Together Oracle deployment architecture: Release 2

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Advantages All services are built from source. Therefore new services become available quickly. No time lag from having to wait for the RDO packages Oracle deployment architecture includes Management Controller Nodes which have a couple additional capability over the Controller Nodes. Deployment can be all-in-one or one or more nodes for each of the – Management, Controller, Compute, Network, Storage node Management Controller Nodes contain Ansible deployment tool to manage the container life cycle Ansible talks to Remote nodes. Remote nodes pull the images from the Registry Ansible will generate the required config files for the images i.e. Nova.conf, Neutron.conf etc and pushes them to appropriate remote nodes Ansible will then start the containers in the correct order It is possible to run Ansible outside the OpenStack environment as long Ansible has access to all OpenStack nodes Local registry: all the nodes need to have access to the local registry

Presentation Notes
MySQL is the most popular database used in OpenStack. OpenStack services use one or multiple databases for storing/retrieving information: Swift Object store (3 databases), Keystone Identity service (4 databases) , Nova and Neutron Loss, even for a short time, of the database leads to errors. As a result, you cluster your database to make it failure tolerant Active/Active clustering is commonly implemented for HA and scalability - Database nodes need scale up or down automatically without needing to restructure them to avoid downtime and improve application performance First lets review how Active/Active clustering is configured? - All API requests from the OpenStack services in the controller nodes go through HA Proxy which does load balancing Data is stored in pairs of storage servers for HA. - Scaling for performance is achieved by addition of the data nodes Currently, all 3rd party OpenStack distributions use Galera for A/A clustering (since Galera InnoDB storage engine is hard coded in several service modules). As you can see, from the table on the right of the slide, MySQL Cluster provides compelling advantages over Galera. For example, MySQL Cluster provides linear write scaling. Galera does not. MySQL Cluster supports online operations (e.g. DDL). Galera does not (in fact, DDL can lock the entire cluster). MySQL Cluster has auto-sharding. Galera does not. MySQL Cluster a variety of APIs, both SQL and NoSQL. Galera is simply SQL MySQL Cluster has auto load-balancing. Galera does not. MySQL Cluster is a low latency in-memory database. Galera is not. MySQL Cluster requires no application failover. Galera does. MySQL Cluster has more advanced self healing capabilities. - MySQL Cluster is fully synchronous. Galera is virtually synchronous. Galera is about HA. MySQL Cluster is about performance and scalability in addition to HABecause of these numerous advantages of MySQL Cluster, Database nodes scale up or down automatically without needing to restructure them avoiding downtime and improving application performance and availability. Release 2 supports MySQL Community Edition A/A cluster and Oracle is working on contributing upstream Docker containers.

Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux: Fully Integrated OpenStack Cloud Solution with a Single Point of Support

• Oracle can do development and resolve issues at the OpenStack, virtualization, and OS layers

• Commercial OpenStack solution for enterprise deployments, all from one vendor

• World-class Oracle support across the infrastructure, not just limited to supporting OpenStack Data as a Service

Software as a Service

Platform as a Service

Infrastructure as a Service

Presenter
Presentation Notes
1) OpenStack, Operating System and Hypervisor Customers struggle in getting satisfactory support and resolution of issues in OpenStack due to continuous enhancements, critical bug fixes and security erratas in the Hypervisor, Operating System and OpenStack. All three products have extensive interdependencies but rapidly evolving and expanding independent of each other - a bug or update in one can cause error in several areas of integration and difficult to diagnose and resolve without deep engineering and QA expertise in all three technologies and products For example some 3rd party OpenStack distributions have no expertise in OS and Kernel and Hypervisor, for example, if Kernel crashes they would not be able to resolve and support Customers have to work with multiple vendors to get their issues resolved resulting in delays in deployment and unplanned downtime Oracle has extensive experience in developing and resolving issues at the OS layers, Virtualization, and OpenStack and their integration for providing excellent support 2) Moving up to the OpenStack Cloud -Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) OpenStack will NOT be successful in the industry without supporting the enterprise class applications since they represent the majority of the applications used. Oracle is applying its experience in implementing and supporting the world’s most demanding enterprise workloads to OpenStack IaaS platform 2) Building OpenStack IaaS requires integration of many pieces – servers, storage, OS, Hypervisor, Middleware, Application, and Databases along with OpenStack. Customers struggle in getting support and resolution of issues when the distribution provider has no understanding, expertise and experience of the other parts in the OpenStack IaaS cloud infrastructure. Only Oracle can offer customer a choice of fully integrated OpenStack Infrastructure as a Service Customer’s journey in deploying and operating OpenStack cloud is simplified with Oracle OpenStack solution overcoming customer’s major obstacle in cobbling together a solution from many different parts from many different suppliers Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux is unique in the industry because it is Fully Integrated OpenStack Infrastructure as a Service Cloud Solution with a Single Point of Support
