Landscape Committee Improvements

We are pleased to inform you that t h e L a n d s c a p e Committee is in the process of making some more capital i m p r o v e m e n t s a r o u n d t h e community in 2012.

The first project you will see completed is the updating and restoration of the rear entrance. We are working with the city to repair the extensive damage done during the widening of Brushy Creek Road.

Additionally, we are excited about the fabrication of new signs for the rear entrance that will make it more compatible with the front entrance and significantly more appealing.  We’ve already raised a portion of the wall by 2 feet to accommodate the changes. It may be completed by the time this is published but that is dependent upon city permitting. We’ve also made a request to the city to consider restoring some trees along Brushy Creek nearing the detention pond. We are unable to plant anything on our own property without breeching the integrity of the pond wall. While timing and final outcome are unknown, their initial response has been positive. If you personally feel strongly about this topic, you are encouraged to contact the city to express your concern regarding tree restoration in general, and specifically near the rear entrance of RaBC.

PETS CORNEROH NO! THE DOG JUST GOT OUT!

Yep…it happens, no matter how careful you are, in the time it takes to read this article’s title, it can happen, your dog could get out, loose in the neighborhood. Service people come in the backyard gate and forget to close it. The kids open the door to play and don’t pay attention to the dog, also wanting to go out and play, bolting past them. There are many variables that could contribute to have this happen. It can happen to anyone—even the couple that writes Pets Corner…smile. Here’s a story about one of those times.

First off, let me preface by saying Michael and I consider ourselves responsible pet owners and are pretty diligent in making sure that the dogs do not get out without being leashed. We have 2 owned dogs Ray (border collie/German shepherd mix) that we adopted when we moved into RBC and Rascal (Keeshond mix) that we inherited from my daughter when she went to college. We like to call them R & R. Now…that is not it for us, as we have volunteered and fostered for several dog rescue groups in the area and nearly always have a foster dog we care for until it is placed into its “forever home.” In all we’ve fostered and placed over 50 dogs since we’ve been here at RBC.

Sorry for the long introduction, but I wanted to make it clear that no matter how diligent or responsible you are, dogs sometimes get out. Back to the story. About four years ago, a service person was doing some work in our home and when he left he did not fully close the front door (it looked closed, but apparently it did not fully latch shut). When Michael opened the back door to let R & R and our foster dog at the time, Zachary, in from the backyard a gust of wind pushed the front door wide open and as the dogs came running in the back door, they just kept right on running like a jail break out the front door! All three of those canine curmudgeons were riding the freedom train. Michael started out after them, but those twelve legs were much, much faster than Michael’s four wheels. Thankfully back then there was a lot less traffic in the neighborhood, so Michael rolled down the middle of Arrowhead Trail giving chase. The dogs were already way out in front and scattered beyond anywhere with easy wheelchair access (It just isn’t so easy to go rolling through yards and hoping you’ll find your dog near an accessible curb cut). Michael finally decided he needed some help so he called to the City of Cedar Park Animal Control Department.

Some facts about HB 1355:This law is HB 1355 also known as “Lillian’s Law” effective 9/1/07 and

states as follows:A person commits an offense if the person is the owner of the dog and fails

with criminal negligence to secure the dog, and the dog makes an unprovoked attack on another person at a location other than the owner’s property that causes serious bodily injury or death to the other person. An offense under this bill is a third degree felony unless the attack causes death and it then becomes a second degree felony. If the owner is convicted, the court may order the dog destroyed.

Dog owners - please control and contain your dog. Please help keep the neighborhood safe for all of us!

Extension Cord SafetyBy Doug Haywood

Many home owners utilize extension cords and power strips wherever necessary without thinking of the potential safety hazards that can occur when extension cords are used incorrectly. To understand the safe use of extension cords and power strips, you need to understand their limitations. Most extension cords are rated for a maximum of ten amps or 1200 watts. The quickest way to overload an extension cord is to plug multiple appliances into the same extension cord. Another way to exceed an extension cords electrical load tolerance is to plug multiple extension cords together to extend the length .

How dangerous are extension cords? According to the National Fire Protection Association, extension cords were responsible for 6900 fires, 91 deaths, 421 injuries and $115.9 Million dollars in a four year period (1994-1998). In fact, both OSHA and National Fire Protection Association codes make it unlawful to use unapproved extension cords. Per OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.303 only approved extension cords are acceptable, and then only if they are for temporary use (no more than 90 days). If for example, a business uses an extension cord for longer than 90 days, that business must install a permanent wiring solution.

Follow these rules to use extension cords and power strips safely:• Always visually inspect the cord for any physical signs of damage,

such as cracked insulation or exposed wires, or a missing ground plug- immediately repair or replace the cord. It’s also wise to cut a damaged extension cord in half to prevent accidental use.

• Never use a cord with a lower wattage rating than required for your needs. And don’t plug one extension cord into another cord (Daisy chain).

• Keep all extension cords away from water, don’t plug an extension cord in with wet hands and always use a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) when using an extension cord in wet or damp locations.

• Don’t run extension cords under carpets, rugs, through doorways, walls or ceiling holes, or high traffic areas.

• Make sure to fully insert the plug into the outlet, and always remove the plug by the plug and not the cord.

• Don’t attach extension cords to a fixed structure (wall) with nails or staples.• Use special, heavy duty extension cords for high wattage appliances such

as air conditioners, portable electric heaters, and freezers, and don’t use indoor rated cords outside.

Our office and conference center are located directly accross the street from Ranch at Brushy Creek.

After explaining his dilemma, Animal Control showed up to join the search and began driving around the neighborhood streets looking for our dogs. (Let me interject loads of Thank You’s and well-earned kudos here for Cedar Park Animal Control for their swift response.) As the Animal Control truck made its rounds, they passed by our house and noticed a dog (Ray, the smart and obedient one…as opposed to Rascal, the smart and LESS obedient one) standing at the door waiting to get back in the house. The officer stopped, opened the door and Ray trotted in. Zachary, a super-cute Spaniel-mix, and Rascal, whose name is well earned, were both still in the wind. About 20 minutes later, Rascal decided to amble back to the house, as well. That was 2 down and 1 to go. We’re guessing Rascal grew tired of having his little foster brother follow him around and rushed back home (for water…or more likely food...hahaha) and left Zachary to fend for his self.

Feeling a bit disheartened, Michael called me at work to update me saying our foster boy, Zachary,

had not yet been spotted and was nowhere to be found. I was so worried about him. We both knew he was not the sharpest tool in the shed and did not know what to do after several hours of Michael searching.

Well just then, out of the blue, the rescue director calls me at work and asks, “Debby, did Zachary get away from you?” I confessed yes and told her that we had a search party out looking for him. She said “call off the search!” To our good fortune a concerned neighbor happened to be looking out her window and saw “…this really cute spaniel lying in the street looking confused.” The finder went over to him, saw that he was just tired and not injured and took him in her house. Thank goodness for his ID tag with the rescue information. This Good Samaritan called the rescue director who called me and I called Michael who met the kind person that held Zachary for us. We were lucky to find him.

Whew…that was not fun and Zachary was the last foster dog we’ve had that did not immediately get a tag with our information, as well as the rescue’s information. Having current

identification on your pet is a critical step in being reunited with your lost pet. Here are some more options for pet owners to make sure that our pets get home:• Microchips (commonly used in shelters &

rescues) *Highly Recommended• Tattoos (some breeders use this as ID)• Flash Drive Tags (a flash drive that holds all

of the pets information on the collar as a tag)• New tags that contain a QR code (smartphone

application can read this tag and provide current pet and contact information)

• Collar tags that have up to date information including your phone number and the dog’s name (address is optional)So, you see, we are all human and mistakes are

made. We feel blessed to live in a community that respects and looks out for our pets. I see all of the Good Samaritans that have helped our lost pets on FaceBook. I am aware that there has been a new Pet Registry created and encourage everyone to take full advantage of it. You can find it here: http://www.vineetrohatgi.com/rabcpets/index.php
