Raising Money for Your Group

Here is some important and useful information that groups should be aware of and giveconsideration to when raising money.

It is likely that your SU Communities group will need funds to support development and activities. You may wish to buy equipment or run events that have a cost attached to them.

To decide what funding your community will need you could start by asking these questions: - What activities will the group be doing? Do these have a cost implication? - Do you need to purchase any equipment for the group? How much will this cost?

Your group will need to fundraise to meet these costs. Fundraising is a great way to increasethe income of your group in support of your aims and objectives.

There are a number of ways that you can do this: - Additional contributions from members* - Charging for activities and events - General fundraising activities and events - Spent It – the SU Communities budget (see Spend It Guidance for more information) - Sponsorship (see Sponsorship Guidance for more information)

Before you start raising funds for your SU Communities group there are some important things that you need to consider. USSU is a registered charity and we must ensure that all fundraising activities comply with guidelines issued by the Charities Commission. As a group registered to the Students’ Union you should only raise funding for your own group and not for any other charity unless this is arranged through RAG (Raise and Give).

Other rules that need to be followed when raising funds: - Your fundraising activity cannot pose an unacceptable risk to either the fundraiser or the general public including other students - Your fundraising activity must be lawful - Your fundraising activity must be clearly advertised - Your fundraising activity should be ethically consistent with the values of the Students’ Union - Your fundraising activity must be properly planned with all of the necessary event plans, risk assessments and permissions completed.

Here are some ways that you could raise money: - Sell tickets for an event; maybe a quiz, a clothes swop or a treasure hunt. - Run a competition that has a small entry fee; best photo, best joke. - Sponsored events like silences, walks, endurance challenges….there are so many options

If you are planning an event or activity with food you need to take extra precautions. See“Food Safety Guidance” for more information.

If you’ve got good fundraising ideas that you want to share with other SU Communities groups about or you want to chat with other groups about fundraising together keep in touch on the SU Communities Network online.

If you are unsure about anything related to fundraising activity you should always check with the SU Communities Team. We are here to help.
