Purpose to store rain water Rain water harvesting system Ways to build a rain water collection system Potential for rain water harvesting DOs and DONTs for water conservation

Why Rain Water Harvesting??? India is blessed with adequate rainfall as a whole, yet there are large swathes of dry, drought prone area. In many other places the quality of groundwater is not good. In such places rainwater harvesting can provide lifeline water for survival and more. Ground water sources are increasingly getting depleted or are getting polluted. Borewells are either silting up, getting short of water or are drawing polluted water.

Why Rain Water Harvesting???

How rain water harvesting is done?Broadly rainwater can be harvested for two purposes Storing rainwater for ready use in containers above or below ground Charged into the soil for withdrawal later (groundwater recharging)

How to build a rainwater collection system

Recycle your rainwater and keep your landscaping looking healthy, the eco-friendly way. Building a rainwater collection system is fast, easy and can save you money on your water bill, as well as significantly reduce your total water usage. Storing your rainwater can significantly help your water bills and is very eco-friendly

Things You'll Need 1 paint strainer 1 5 gallon / 10 liter bucket 1 55 gallon / 210 liter drum with a lid downspout fittings 1 gutter strainer 3 cinder blocks 1 3/4" / 2cm spigot with 1/4" / 65cm turn ball valve 1 permanent black marker 1 jigsaw 1 powerdrill with 7/8" / 2.2cm spade bit

1 half-round bastard file1 utility knife 1/4" / 65cm galvanized wood screws An inexpensive pH kit.

Cut a bucket to create the top of your rainwater tank.

Use permanent marker and the top of the five gallon bucket and trace around the top of the 55 gallon / 210 liter drum.

Fitting tap into the drum

Add a gutter extension.

Measure and mark where you need to cut the fitting so that the end will run into the top of your rainwater collection barrel.

Ensure a proper fit

Put filter at the opening

Enjoy using your rainwater collection system.

Potential for rainwater harvesting A small 100 square metre of roof area would receive 90,000 litres of rainwater in an average year of rain You can calculate what is the potential of rainwater harvesting in your area and have one appropriate for you. Rainwater harvesting has tremendous potential and it is up to each one of us to push this technique further for a sustainable water situation for India.

DOs and DONTs for conservation of waterDOs Take shorter showers & save 3-5 gallons every minute. Fill the tub halfway & save 10-15 gallons Place a plastic bottle filled with water in your toilet tank Use a self-closing nozzle on your hose. Repair leaky faucets & turn taps off tightly. Slow drip waste 15-20 gallons/day DONTs DON'T run the water while shaving, washing your hands or brushing your teeth. Faucets use 2-3 gallons/minute. DON'T flush the toilet unnecessarily DON'T water lawns during the heat of the day.
