-Abstract-

The respect and application of childrens rights in the educational process of the preparatory preschool program represents a very broad and contemporary issue which is of major importance for all stages of the educational system. By employing various methods, this paper grapples with some important factors which have a high degree of influence on the respect and application of childrens rights in the educational work on the first, legally mandatory, stage of education the preparatory preschool program. This paper exhibits not only the entire historical development of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, but also the period after the Charter of Childrens Rights has been signed, which refers to numerous analyses, reports and strategies that are vital to perform with the aim of implementing the Convention of the Rights of the Child as qualitatively as possible and improving the social status of children. Furthermore, the paper presents the reports and examples of positive practice world wide, as well as the current situation and position of children in the Republic of Serbia. The greatest stress in the paper is placed on the implementation of the Convention of the Rights of the Child in the preschool period, on the ability of preschool children to understand ideas about childrens rights, as well as the readiness of the preparatory preschool programs to accept the application and respect of childrens rights. What is also accentuated is the importance of education in terms of democratic values, on which the Convention of the Rights of the Child was based in the first place, chiefly with the aim of raising the awareness of the importance of active civil participation and the development of democratic society, which can be achieved solely through the integration of education about, for and through childrens rights. The final part of the paper displays the results of the empirical research and qualitative analysis which indicate the level of respecting childrens rights in the educational practice of preschool institutions, and which are of tremendous importance for creating the educational process in accordance with the basic principles of the Convention of the Rights of the Child.
