The OB Cues Ladies Tour held their second tour stop of the year at Fast Eddie’s in Austin, TX the weekend of February 28-March 1st. Fast Eddie’s is always one of the tour players favorite stop and again, the host site, staff and fans, made it another memorable event. Fifty-five players signed up for the Main Event and by the end of the night on Saturday, there were 12 players left to continue in their winning quest. Top players still in the running and who were undefeated were Bonnie Plowman, Tara Williams, Lisa Marr and Kyu Yi. Also new to the tour this year is Julie Comitini (formerly Mason). Julie has always been a familiar force on the pool scene. She had been on a little hiatus but is back and getting in gear once again, so we hope to see her more and more at future events. As play continued on Sunday, Bonnie and Kyu played for the hot seat and it was Bonnie who came out the victor and would wait for her opponent in the finals. Meanwhile on the other side of the bracket, there was a marquee matchup between Julie Comitini and Cristina DeLaGarza fighting to stay alive in the tournament but more importantly the winner of this matchup would win the WPBA Qualifier for the Great Lakes Classic event in June. Julie won the match and the

qualifier which is not a bad take home for her first OB Cues tour stop for the year. Congratulations Julie!Additionally, Lisa Henderson-Major and Catherine Naes had a good

Lisa and Catherine!The semi-finals match between Lisa Marr and Kyu Yi was another hard fought battle. Lisa and Kyu matched up earlier on Sunday. Kyu won that match and Lisa did not want to let it happen again. It looked like Kyu was on her way, though, to win the second matchup when the score was 6-5. With perfect shape from the 8-ball to the 9-ball, Kyu fell short of the pocket and missed thus leaving an easy 9-ball out for Lisa. Score now 6-6. In the deciding game, Lisa made the 1-2 and 3-9 combo for the match and a bid in the finals against Bonnie.Bonnie had other things in mind for Lisa though. Lisa was not playing as stellarly as she is known to play and Bonnie was taking no

prisoners. Bonnie won the 1st and only set 7-4 and the guaranteed 1st place prize money of $750. A Pool Player’s Guide to Savvy Air Travel

With the soaring prices of fuel these days, more and more people are choosing to fly to events instead of drive. When flying, here are some useful tips for hassle-free traveling:As pool players, it’s safe to assume that if you’re flying to a tournament with your cues, you will be checking a bag, no questions. The days of carrying our cues on the plane are behind us. To make sure your cues arrive where you do, always get to the airport AT LEAST one hour prior to boarding. Depending on the airport, you may want to arrive even earlier.Checking in

♦ Most airlines currently charge a $15 fee to check your first bag and an additional $25 fee for the second. If you haven’t already, you may want to invest in an oversized duffle that will fit both your cues and clothes together. [see SammsPocket.com for an assortment]

♦ Make sure none of your bags are over 50 pounds. There’s typically a charge for that too.

♦ If you’re connecting, confirm that your bags are checked in all the way to your final destination.

♦ Check in online whenever possible. Just about every airline offers online check-in within 24 hours before your flight time. Even if you don’t have a printer, you can usually (re)print your boarding pass when you arrive at the ticket counter to drop off your bag(s).

♦ Have your photo ID out of your purse/wallet from the time you arrive at the airport until after you get through security.

♦ If you checked in online, you still want to (re)confirm the departing gate number with the ticket agent after checking your bag(s).

♦ Once you’ve checked your bag(s) in and they’re confirmed on the flight – Now, RELAX… You should still try to get to your gate on time, but don’t panic if the security line is a mile long. It’s unlikely that the plane will take off with your bags on board without you. They’ll generally page you until you get to the gate.

Security♦ Try to wear comfortable, slip on shoes that are easy to remove.

Please wear socks.♦ Have your boarding pass and ID out and ready when entering

the security line.

This month I have three simple reminders to help you look and play better at the table:

1. Be sure your grip hand is not too far back.2. Do not elevate your cue unless you mean to.3. Always place the chalk “blue side up.”Pool players shorter than 5’10” are far more likely to grip the cue stick too far back. I guess they’ve seen some lanky, run-out player gripping near the bottom of the wrap or several inches up from the rubber bumper. This might be exactly correct for a person

who is 6’2”. . However, your wingspan as a 5’5” pool player is not built to hold it in the same spot. Gripping the cue too far back severely limits your backswing. This robs you of smooth acceleration and power. It also hampers your ability to see the cue moving (hopefully) in a straight line. Furthermore, your back hand can be descending whilst striking the cue ball which increases the possibility of an errant strike.Cradle the cue in the correct position based on your height and length of the cue stick. Your hand should be hanging straight down from your elbow at the moment the cue tip contacts the cue ball. [See Diagram A]

The grip hand should swing smoothly like the pendulum on a grandfather clock. If your hand is positioned properly and your cue stick is level, the game will get much easier to master.This brings us right to reminder number two. Keep your cue as level to the table surface as possible on every shot. Jump shots and Masse’ shots are obvious exceptions to this rule of thumb. You must realize that on most shots there is still a small degree of elevation. In other words, the cue slopes downward from the back of the cue to the cue tip. The execution of an elevated stroke can cause unwanted curve of the cue ball on its way to the target. [See Diagram B] Aiming is tricky enough

without trying to gauge the amount of curve or swerve. Billiard Physicists like Jewett, Shepard, and Alciatore have dissected these effects in the laboratory, but the bottom line is minimize/avoid elevation for a more consistent pool stroke. Third, my personal crusade for 2009: Please place the cube of chalk on the rail with the blue side up. [See Image C] This game involves a lot

Canterbury Park is a leader in the gaming industry housing one of the nicest poker rooms in the Midwest and their staff should be commended on the great service they provided to our members. The BCAPL adds $10,000 to this event to benefit of all of its members in the Midwest and this tournament has seen consistent growth over the last few years. The tournament kicked off on Thursday with a $500 Added 9 Ball Tournament with 21 players entered as well as a $500 Added Scotch Doubles Tournament where there were 31 teams entered. Thursday evening brought about the start of the Singles Championship. The event’s growth brought 314 Singles Players competing in 6 different categories for a total prize pool of $17,760. Friday evening brought about the start of the team competition with 124 teams competing in 5 different categories for a total prize pool of $19,140. All of the competition took place on 96 state of the art Diamond Smart tables and certified BCA referees were used for all of the officiating. M8 Pool Leagues, the largest independent pool league in the world, recently held their Annual Tournament at Canterbury Park in Shakopee Minnesota where over $100,000 in prize money was paid out to league members. Thank you to the staff at Canterbury Park it is truly a First Class Gaming Facility and their efforts to serve our league members were appreciated. This was the first year of “participation” based prize levels where prizes for the top four positions in the Annual Tournament are based on a team’s participation level during the year. A team must play in the Fall Season to participate in the Annual Tournament and that makes them eligible for the “Tier 1” top prize of $5000. However, if a team chooses to play another season in that same calendar year - and keeps 4 players common to their Fall Team Roster, then they become a “Tier 2” team that is now eligible for a top prize of $7500. If they choose to play all 3 seasons and keep 4 players common to their Fall Team Roster - they become a “Tier 3” team that is now eligible for the top prize of $10,000. This does not include the thousands of dollars in seasonal prize money that the teams will play for in the Winter and Summer Seasons. Teams can now win over $14,000 in a single year, just by playing in their local M8 league. And the

Singles Championship has a cool $3500 1st Place Prize! So, with the best handicapping available to pool leagues - and the top prizes paid anywhere, join M8 Pool Leagues where you can expect more and you get more! Things got started on February 19th with a $500 Added Scotch Doubles tournament. There were 49 teams that battled it out, but in the end it came down to Beau Runningen and Jamie Pluta vs. Shaun Warburton and Scott Barrett for the coveted title. Beau and Jamie took the 1st Place Prize of $700 and Shaun and Scott walked away with the 2nd place prize of $500. The Advanced Teams began at 9:00am Friday morning with 120 teams competing for the top prize of up to $10,000. M8 is known for accurate handicapping and it became evident in this event as an unprecedented number of matches went hill/hill and provided plenty of excitement. By the end of Friday there were 64 teams left and the 256 player Singles Championship had begun. There were dozens of Mini Tournaments throughout the weekend and the players and spectators all had a great time. By Sunday morning, there were only 4 Advanced teams left vying for the Championship and 10 players left in the Singles. The quarter finals of

the team event pitted Hard N High of Kelly’s Korner in Centerville Minnesota against The Players Club out of Throwbacks in Woodbury Minnesota. Hard N High pulled out very close match to proceed on to the semi finals against Nightcrawlers out of Babe’s Restaurant & Lounge in Lakeville Minnesota. That match went all 5 sets and came down to a hill/hill game in the final set before Nightcrawlers was crowned the Victor. Nightcrawlers were all set to play against the undefeated Lumberjacks from Biff’s Sports Bar in Spring Lake Park Minnesota. Lumberjacks started fast and never really let up as they pulled away to take their 1st Place Prize of $7500. Nightcrawlers 2nd Place finish was worth $4000, Hard N High’s 3rd Place finish was worth $2500, and The Players Club 4th Place finish was worth $1750. The finals of the Singles Championship had some fantastic matches as well. Down to the final few players in a 256 player field means that mistakes can be costly as Bob Williams found out in the Championship Match. Bob needed to “double dip” Beau Runningen in the finals when he left the 8 ball

in the jaws of the pocket and let Beau get to the table. M8 is a “Winner Breaks” league and Beau took advantage of this as he ran the table and then broke and ran the next 2 games to win the $3500 1st Place Prize. Bob Williams won $2000 for 2nd Place, Jeremy Zacco won $1400 for 3rd Place, Bob Pike won $1000 for 4th Place, Jason Ewert won $800 for 5th Place, Justin Steinberg won $600 for 6th Place, Kris Kalli won $450 for 7th Place, and Babe Songetay won $300 for 8th Place. In the quarter finals it was Cue Ball First out of Two Stooges Sports Bar in Fridley Minnesota vs. Bush Hogs Boys & Babe also out of Two Stooges Sports Bar. Bush Hogs Boys & Babe pulled out a very close match and meant that they would face Rate Me out of Kelley’s Bar in Chaska Minnesota. Another close match that Bush Hogs Boys & Babe would pull out to get into the finals against Shootin Fools out of CR’s Sports

The first match came down to a hill/hill game in the final set that would be won by Bush Hogs Boys & Babe. Now it’s all down to the second match of a double dip. This one also came down to hill/hill in the 5th and deciding set. But the magic was all gone for Bush Hogs Boys & Babe as the Shootin Fools pulled it out in the end to win the $7500 1st Place Prize. Bush Hogs Boys & Babe won the 2nd Place Prize of $4000, Rate Me won the 3rd Place Prize of $2000, and Cue Ball First won the 4th Place Prize of $1750. The Masters Team Tournament started Friday at 6:00pm with 48 teams. The quality of play was fantastic as one of the top Masters Teams in the area, Phase This! marched through the winner’s side undefeated. The finals held the same two teams as a week earlier in the BCAPL Midwest Regional Championships as Phase This! would square off against No Idea! (The same team was called Whatever Dude! in the BCAPL event) and the outcome would be the same. No Idea! just had no idea how to defeat Phase This! and collected $3000 for 2nd Place. Teams from across the state converged in Sedalia at Sharky’s Billiards March 13-15 to shoot it out for the 2009 MO-KAN ACS Team and Singles Championship Tournament.In double-elimination men’s singles Cory Smith, Sedalia, fought his way back to first place after being placed in the losers bracket his first match. Brad Blankenship, Sedalia, came through the winners bracket only to be defeated by Smith twice in a row to determine who claimed first. Coming in third was Willie Schrader, Jr., fourth was Josh Blaylock, and fifth was Jeff Paxton, all of Sedalia, MO.In the women’s round robin competition, Amanda Boles, Sedalia, won 23 out of a possible 35 games against the other female competitors to take first place. Caron Schrader, Sedalia, won 21, taking second; Audra Dean, Sedalia, came in third, winning 17. Marilyn Damman, Warsaw, MO, who placed second last year, came in fourth this year. In women’s team competition, Sedalia’s Beautiful Bees went unchallenged to claim first place for the second year in a row.Team competition was tough and it came down to three Sedalia Sharky’s Billiards teams battling it out for first place. The Strokers came through the winners bracket and sat on the hill waiting for their competition for first. The Sharks had originally been put in the losers bracket by the Strokers and beat Barlow’s Bunch from Marceline, MO, 11-7 to move on to the next bracket. There the Sharks battled Shoot to Thrill, Sedalia, beating them 11-6 and moving on to play for first against the Strokers. The Sharks were stopped short when the Strokers defeated them 13-10.Finishing third was Shoot to Thrill, Sedalia, fourth was Barlow’s Bunch from Marceline, MO, and fifth was Want Some, Get Some, from Brookfield, MO.Keith Hayden, Sedalia, MO, earned the Men’s Spectacular Shot Award

for the tournament in his first match against the Strokers in the play off. The cue ball was behind the eight ball when Hayden approached the table for his shot. In order to make a good hit, Hayden had to jump the cue ball over the eight ball and into a three-ball combination shot to make his legal ball. With his opponent, himself, and most of the audience laughing at the leave, Hayden remarked, “Well, I guess I’ll just have to pull out my jump stick and make a three-ball jump combination.” Hayden then proceeded to do just that, prompting exclamations of approval from the audience. Mellody Allee, Sedalia, MO, earned the Women’s Spectacular Shot Award with two shots. Her first shot with the cue ball at one end of the table, she had to bank the six ball the entire length of the table to hit four more balls lined up from first diamond past the center pocket to put her two ball in the opposite corner pocket. Calling the shot, she stepped to the table and made the shot. Looking at her second award-winning shot, Allee’s balls were sitting behind a cluster of her opponents balls with the cue ball sitting in the kitchen. Allee had to kick the cue ball two rails to hit a two ball combination into the side pocket, which she did. Shaking her head in disbelief, her opponent, Audra Dean, wanted to know when Allee was starting her Trick Shot career.Sharky’s Billiards will host the Missouri State All Leagues 10-Point Handicap 8 Ball team tournament April 18-19. Top Shots Pool & Darts in La Crosse, WI, on Sunday, March 22. The $500 added event featured twenty-four players in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes. Tim Colgan (La Crosse, WI) breezed undefeated to the tourney finals. In the A-side finals, Colgan clipped Jamie Nichols (La Crosse, WI) by a 3-2 margin. On the B-side, Tony Miller (Barre Mills, WI) and Danton Tibbitts (La Crosse, WI) dispatched Mike Mellem (La Crosse, WI) 3-2 and Art Ekern (La Crescent, MN) 3-1 respectively at 5th place. In the B-side semifinals Tibbitts eliminated Tony Miller at 4th place, 3-1. Recovering from his A-side finals loss to Colgan, Jamie Nichols finished Danton Tibbitt’s run at 3rd place with an 3-1 win, giving Nichols another shot at Colgan. Mark Haddad (Broomfield, CO) dominated Rick Field (Denver, CO) in the A-side finals by a 5-2 margin to gain the hot seat. Nick Smith then kicked into a higher gear to stop John Rivera’s’s march at 4th place by a 5-1 margin, and Rick Field’s run at 3rd place, 5-0. ♦ Once you get through security, check the gate assignment again before walking all the way there and realizing that it’s changed.

♦ Try to wear clothes with pockets. They come in handy.♦ If you need a pillow or blanket, make sure you grab one or ask for

one as soon as you board. Supplies are usually limited.♦ Dress in layers. It can get chilly on the plane.♦ Dress comfortably. You’ll be sitting in whatever you’re wearing for

the next couple hours, or longer.♦ Don’t forget to pack your music, books, games, pillow, snacks, and

any other essentials.♦ And, of course, never leave your personal belongings unattended

and always check to make sure you haven’t left anything behind where ever you stop.

To play the game well, a player must understand and learn to control cut angle, cue ball deflection, speed, squirt, swerve, throw, skid, and countless varieties of spin. Dirty cloth and balls make these complicated variables even more unpredictable. Preventing the equipment from becoming filthy is something we can all do to help.In these tough economic times, pool rooms, bars, amusement vendors, and tournament promoters are tempted to cut back on table maintenance and expenses. During the boom times it wasn’t such a big deal to replace worn cloth or throw out a trashed cue ball. Now, it seems tables are going many months longer between getting recovered. Ball cleaners are getting old, not repaired, or used with improper cleaning solutions. Staffing cutbacks prevent suitable cleaning of said equipment. Players are routinely seeing $1.50 per game or ever increasing table time fees at leagues and tournaments. We have the right to request good equipment and a proper playing environment. We are the customers and those in control of the equipment should listen. We should also be compelled to take care of their equipment.
