Narrative - Soldier Meadows High Rock Estray Domcstic Sheep Helicopter Flight

1 Project Goals and Measurable Outcomes On Sunday July 6 2012 the NDOW area biologist for th e Soldier 11eadois High Rock Canyon region Chris Hampson was made ~Ivare of the escape o f 11 domesuc sheep from tlJe Soldier rvreadowsRanch into the Black Rock Dcsert-- High Iock Canyon region o f Humbo ldt Couon Nevada Some of these domestic sheep were seen bv o bservers in the C hukar CulchBlack Butte region This region is prime California Bighorn Sheep habitat with many California Bighorn Sheep in the regio n The dangerous po tential for domestic sheep interaction with iild sh eep was imminent After much effort fron1_NDOV perso nnel including Chris Hampson l1ike Cox lvlike Dobel and E d Partee the owners of the ranch were contacted and gave their permission too remove any domestic sheep found dun ng the heLicoptcr flight on July 12 2012 During the day- long flight only onc domestic ram was found the other 10 domestic shecp were not accounted for T his ram was harvested and tested fo r diease bv N DOWs wildlife veterinarian Dr Peregrine Wolff The results o f the testing showed thi s ram carried tVO of dlC potentially dangerous o rganisms causing wild sheep respiratory Jisease s uf this time no oLber domestic sheep have been spotteJ in this area Chris Hampson ha~ informed aU antelope and bighorn sheep tag ho lders in rhe area to contact NDOW immediately if an do mestic sheep arc secn

The project goal is to remove any domestic sheep from this region to prevent inreraction with wild sheep The measurable outcome will be t-hrough cootinued monitoring o f the region by

Background information Severe respiratory lbsease leading to death and debilitation o f wild sheep including Nevada s bighorn sheep populations is a devastating cause of loss to N evadas bigho rn sheep Causes o f these outbreaks o f respiratory disease arc multiple including interactio n o r do mescic and wild sheep chronic carriers o f disease within wild sheep populauo ns interaction with domestic goats interaction with wild lvrountain Goats and unknown sources of tJ1C disease-causing o rganisms Bighorn sheep axe uniquely susceptible to certain disease-causing o rga nisms carried by do mestic sheep and goats Domestic sheep and goats can act as inapparent catlicrs meaning they arc co mpletely healthy and ye t able to transmit organisms to wild sheep during times o f c1o~e co ntact Jlultiple scientific studies have proven that one putcntiall preventable cause o f these outbreaks o f respiratory disease is when domestic sheep mjx witll ild sheep This can happen when domestic sheep travel thlough wild sheep habitat or when wild sheep mix witl1 domestic sheep while they arc in tJlelr grazing alloU11ents Xhen domcsLic sheep o r goalS are suspected of unautho rizcd trespass into wild sheep habitat tl1ey must be removed as guickly as possible Xhen wild sheep are suspected of co ntact with dOIlJesLic sheep OJ goats the must also be removed as quiclJy as possible before they can return to the wile herds and potentiaUy spread disease
