From the Playground to the Workplace - Making Parks Accessible

For decades, the Fairfax County Park Authority has worked very hard to identify opportunities to make our facilities and programs accessible to all residents, including those with disabilities. Since 2015, we have increased the number of adapted recreation programs we offer by nearly 20 percent. At the same time, we have expanded the offerings to include not only swimming classes, but also other forms of recreation including group exercise, sports, martial arts and outdoor amusements. Last year, when we introduced our Adapted Fun & Fit Camp, it filled in record time, demonstrating a tremendous need for more of these programs in our community.

As we continue to expand our adapted programs, we are also exploring ways to help people with developmental disabilities attain the skills they need to obtain gainful employment and lead independent lives. In December 2017, the Park Authority made an important commitment to that end by entering in a unique partnership with ServiceSource called Pathways to Careers. Through this partnership, we will be able to foster meaningful career development for people with disabilities through park internships and in turn provide expanded service to all park users.

The Pathways to Careers partnership offers our current employees a learning opportunity, too. By promoting an inclusive workplace, we will realize the full potential of our community’s workforce and be better prepared to identify and respond to our diverse community needs in the future. The possibilities are practically limitless, and we are looking forward to participating in this meaningful joint venture for years to come.

How to Use Parktakes

The printing and production of Parktakes are paid for with user fees and paid advertising.

Parktakes is printed with soy-based ink on paper that is recyclable in Fairfax County’s newspaper recycling program.

Inclusion of paid advertising in Parktakes does not imply endorsement of the advertised goods, products or services by the Fairfax County Park Authority.

About your subscription:If Parktakes isn’t delivered to your house, request your free subscription by calling 703-222-4664. You can also subscribe online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/ptsubs.htm. Subscription requests are valid for three years. For the date your subscription expires, check your mailing label.

Your member number appears above your name. Please include this number on address corrections and subscription renewals.

You’ll find something to suit every recreational and leisure interest in Parktakes, and your key to finding the perfect opportunity lies in the table of contents.

Parktakes is generally organized by subject area, although you may find related interests in other catego-ries. For example, the Events section lists most of the public events at park sites, but site or interest-specific events are sometimes listed in other sections. A horse show would most likely be featured in the Equestrian and Farm section, and gardening workshops could be featured in the Gardening section or in the Nature section.

The Children’s Corner is tailored to children age 5 and younger, and programs for older children can be found throughout the magazine. The Adapted Leisure Services section lists indoor and outdoor programs for people with disabilities.

You’ll always find features in the beginning of Parktakes, and park locations, directions and class sites can be found on pages 10-15.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Our registration staff is always happy to help. You can reach some-one Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (703) 222-4664.

From the big city to your own backyard, you can get a front row seat for one of the greatest shows on Earth this spring just by looking up! As the mercury rises, colorful, migrant birds will flock north from their winter homes in Central and South America. Northern Virginia is

one of the best areas for bird watching because of its location near the coast, the mountains and along the north/south divider, and on April 28,

you can learn more about both day- and night-flyers and the important role they play in the environment at the Birds and Bats Festival at

Lake Accotink Park.“Birds are an excellent indicator of how healthy our environment

is,” said Park Authority naturalist Tony Bulmer. “They are pollina-tors, food for many animals and good at insect control. Plus, they are just fascinating to watch.”

Many birds entertain us with their seasonal rituals and their jubilant songs heralding spring’s arrival. By contrast, the stealthy bats soar at night as they serve a very important role in keeping food on your table.

“Bats are the primary predators of night-flying insects, such as the hornworm moth,” Bulmer said. “Hornworm moth larvae cause

severe damage to corn and other crops that are commonly seen on our dinner table, and one study shows that bats save corn farmers

$1 billion annually in insect control.”More fun facts and family-friendly activities await you at the Birds

and Bats Festival at Lake Accotink Park. Enjoy bird and nature exhibits, take a naturalist-led bird hike or boat ride and discover how to create a bird habitat in your own backyard. It could be your ticket to a colorful show of winged wonders for years to come.

To learn more about the Birds and Bats Festival, turn to the Events section, and to explore bird programs throughout Fairfax County, turn to the Nature section.

Celebrate the first signs of spring by at-tending the Bluebells at the Bend festival Saturday, April 14 at Riverbend Park in Great Falls! These breathtaking beau-ties usher in springtime by carpeting the park’s floodplain with their magnificent blooms, and the bluebells are so abundant in some areas, you can’t see an end! The event features wagon rides, wildflower walks, musical entertainment and more! It’s a perfect way to expend some energy outdoors and to celebrate spring’s arrival. See for yourself the glorious display that draws generations of wildflower watch-ers to Riverbend Park every year. For festival details, see the Events section of Parktakes.

You can also see bluebells and learn about other harbingers of spring during wildflower walks and cherry blossom activities in several Fairfax County Parks. For more information, see the Nature, Gardening and History sections.

Inspire Yourself with a Spring HikeNeed a cure for cabin fever? Take a hike! Hiking is a form of exercise

that anyone can take up at any age, and Fairfax County is well-known for its picturesque and diverse trail system. Spring is the perfect time to explore our area’s hundreds of miles of woodland trails and enjoy the beauty of emerging wildflowers and migrating birds. Mapping your route and calculating the distance is easy with the Park Authority’s online map-ping tool, Trail Buddy. Connect with Trail Buddy at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/trails, map your route and embark on a journey to clear your mind, get some exercise and enjoy our beautiful parks!

One new trail to try this year is Chessie’s Trail at Lee District Park. This unique, fully accessible

path was designed with children in mind. Along the trail, you’ll find family-friendly interactive features including a face sculpture, a tree stump bench, a sound garden, spinning rocks and more. Cross the metal grate bridge and discover a broken path and sidewalk with animal tracks. By the time you reach the stone abacus at the end of the nearly ½-mile trail, you will have encountered all kinds of wildlife figures. The trail starts near the treehouse seating area in Chessie’s BIG Backyard at Lee District Park.

Explore the trails with a naturalist and learn about everything from the trees to the creatures that call the park home. To find a program near you, turn to the Nature and Outdoor Recre-ation sections.

Add a modern twist to your usual yoga routine with paddleboard yoga. The new class at South Run RECenter combines traditional

yoga poses with an unstable surface in the pool for a challenging balanc-ing act that makes fitness fun. “I think this is good,” said Rabbi Abu of Springfield after a paddleboard

yoga demonstration class at the RECenter. “It challenges your skills more than land yoga.”

Student Scott Thompson of West Springfield also tried the class while his three sons were engaged in other RECenter ac-tivities. “It was definitely interesting,” he said. “Between normal yoga and this, the balance factor with this [paddleboard yoga] is definitely a challenge.”

In paddleboard yoga, students dressed in clean athletic wear perform exer-cises on top of a floating training platform called a FITMAT, which is anchored to the pool’s lane dividers. Four anchors per mat provide more stability for beginners, and two anchors provide greater challenge for advanced students. “The feel of standing on the FITMAT is the same as standing on a Bosu ball,” said instructor Kat Davis. “To do the exercises on the mat in the water, you re-ally have to use a lot of lesser or stabilizing core muscles to keep you upright.”

While similar classes are held in open water out-doors, Davis says students often feel more comfort-able in a controlled, pool environment. “Some people are afraid to go into the open water, and the pool set-ting takes the fear out of it,” she said. There’s another benefit to holding this class in the RECenter pool. Because it’s indoors, students can challenge themselves with this unique, 30-minute, floating yoga and fitness class year-round.

To find a Paddleboard Yoga class that’s convenient for you, turn to the Aquatics section.

Kat Davis leads the Paddleboard Yoga class with encouragement and energy.

Keep your golf game at peak-season performance, year-round, with the newly renovated indoor practice facility at Pinecrest Golf Course. Renovations are scheduled to begin in February, and once they are complete, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art amenities, including expanded hitting bays, an instructional bay with electronic swing analysis and a Track-Man indoor golf simlulator that gives you the option to prac-tice and play realistic golf anytime, regardless of the weather.

“This is the first major upgrade at Pinecrest since it opened in 1986,” said Park Authority Golf Enterprises Manager Todd

Johnson. “The finished proj-ect will meet modern standards for indoor practice facilities and give Fairfax County residents expanded opportunities to learn and prac-tice golf.”

The updated facility will also include improved lighting and more natural light via skylights and windows. The project is being funded through a variety of sources, including the 2008 park bond, grants and private donations.

Step into Adapted Fun & Fit Camp at Spring Hill RECenter, and you gain a greater appreciation for opportunities that many take for granted. Here, campers with developmental disabilities joyfully play and learn together in a program that promotes fitness, wellness and social skills.

“There aren’t that many camp options out there for teenagers and young adults with

disabilities,” said adapted program specialist Nicole Woodward. With childlike exuberance, participants in this week-long,

half-day camp had fun playing games, swimming, creating nutri-tious snacks and meeting new friends when it was offered last summer, for the first time. The popular camp also introduced students to activities many had never tried before, such as yoga, aqua Zumba and diving.

“I like swimming in the deep end,” exclaimed 19-year-old Nate of McLean. “It was awesome!”

“I like cardio, because it’s fun,” 14-year-old Jessie said with the enthusiasm of a cheerleader. “I love my friends, and Kelly. She’s

my new friend.”“It’s the little moments that make this so rewarding, like seeing the expres-

sions on the kids’ faces as they were jumping off the diving board for the first time,” said recreational therapy student Kaitlynne Temple. “You could tell the campers were really enjoying themselves and having fun. That makes all the planning and coordinating worth it.”

Parents also noted other positive influences of this unique camp ranging from independent living skills to nutri-tion education.

“One mom told me that every time her kid came home, he’d share the recipe of the heathy snack we made for that day,” Temple recalled. “She said he’s never been excited about healthy food before.”

Perhaps the greatest measure of a camp’s success is the feedback from its partici-pants. “One camper was

crying on the last day because she was sad it was over,” Woodward said fondly. Now she can smile because Adapted Fun & Fit Camp is back again for the 2018 season.

Fairfax County Park Authority offers a wide variety of camps for kids of all abilities, interests and age groups. To learn more, turn to the Camps section.

Amanda Eggers, Sheanell Scott

and Ashley Speier, Shenandoah University

It’s 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning, and Backlick Park in Annandale is abuzz with activity. Among the volunteers are three

pharmacy school students from Shenandoah University’s

Fairfax campus. They are part of the prescription to rid this park of

overgrown, invasive plants and trash and restore its vitality.

“We go to school just two exits away,” said the class service chair, Ashley Speier. “We were looking for a

good opportunity to help the community, and we thought this would be a nice thing to do.”

While the Park Authority’s Area 2 crew used heavy machinery to clear masses of invasive overgrowth, the graduate students teamed up with other volunteers from the Falls Church and Annandale Lions clubs to manually cut roots from the land. “The work is transformative,” said area crew manager Mark Plourde. By this time next year, the barren ground will be covered with grass and provide plenty of open space for play and picnics.

Student Amanda Eggers finds the work gratifying. “It just feels nice to do something to help out,” she said, and her classmate, Sheanell Scott agreed. “It’s important to get involved, and we feel it’s our duty to get involved in the

community to help make it better.”As the students focused their energy on the open space, other

volunteers were at work on the park’s playground. Armed with hand tools, they spread mulch evenly around the park’s playground equipment to help give children a safe place to play.

“It’s a challenge for our six area crews to maintain the county’s 427 parks alone,” said Park Opera-tions director Todd Brown. “Our partnership with volunteers gives everyone involved a sense of com-munity pride and ownership in our parks.” That’s exactly why the pharmacy students from Shenando-ah University signed up to help. “We just wanted to show that a few hours on a Saturday morning can make a difference,” Speier said.
