Point about young people in the 1950s All - Does this show a change or a similarity to the 1940s – write change or something that stayed the same

C and B – explain how this is a change or similarity

A/A* - link this to explain whether this shows a change or similarity to young people in the 1960s

Rationing stayed until 1954. Bomb damage was everywhere in the early 1950s. There were shortages.

Young people generally felt free and safe.

Families ate together, watched TV together, went to the same schools and usually worked for the same companies.

All young people could get a job and wages went up as employers competed for employees. They tended to keep their wages.

Trade unions managed to make sure hours were shorter.

Teenagers spent their wages on consumer goods – which were often different to their parents. For example, different clothes, music and television.

In the early 1950s most teenagers experienced the same culture as their parents, by the late 1950s this changed as teenagers began to listen to American music like Elvis Presley and cinema that their parents didn’t.

Youth subcultures like the Teddy Boys emerged in small amounts for the first time – particularly in the late 1950s. The media responded hysterically to them, especially after there was a riot in a rock around the clock screening.

Life for young people in the 1940s was a traumatic time of war, death, injury, evacuation, splitting of families and rationing. After the war families were reunited but people were generally very poor and rationing was still in place. They tended to listen to same music and where the same clothes as their parents. Most children would do the same jobs as their parents. Most people had jobs but their wages were low and they worked long hours. Any teenagers usually gave any money they earned from odd jobs to their parents to help financially. People

were exposed to some American culture from American soldiers here.

‘In the period 1950-1975 there was little change in attitudes towards women.’ How far do the sources support this statement?

You can all write 2 paragraphs for each side including sources and a conclusion.

Now you need to make sure you use own knowledge connected to the source to help you answer the question and to evaluate the source to help you answer the question.

Here they have connected own knowledge to the source to help them answer the question - ‘In the period 1950-1975 there was little change in

attitudes towards women.’ How far do the sources support this statement?

Source A shows that there was little change in attitudes towards women because there is a woman in the advert serving everybody else tea and food and the advert is aimed at women. Here the woman is carrying out a traditional role. This source would be true as only 22% of married women worked in the 1950s – which does show that there was little change in attitudes towards women.

Here they have connected own knowledge to the source to help them answer the question - ‘In the period 1950-1975 there was little change in

attitudes towards women.’ How far do the sources support this statement?

• Source B shows that there was a change in attitudes towards women as a girl here is working by breaking up old boats – which isn’t a traditional role for a woman. However I know that at the time most women were expected to be housewives and only a few women worked – those who did work tended to work in traditionally female jobs like being a secretary or a nurse. This then makes me think that even though the source says this, I don’t think it represents the case for most women, so there wasn’t actually a change in attitudes towards women.

Have they connected own knowledge to the source to help them answer the question here? - ‘In the period 1950-1975 there was little change in attitudes

towards women.’ How far do the sources support this statement? How could you improve it?

• Source C shows that attitudes towards women were changing because girls were interested in training for heavy jobs and in science and technology. This shows that attitudes were changing towards women.

Here they have evaluated the source to help them answer the question - ‘In the period 1950-1975 there was little change in attitudes towards women.’

How far do the sources support this statement?

Source A shows that there was little change in attitudes towards women because there is a woman in the advert serving everybody else tea and food and the advert is aimed at women. Here the woman is carrying out a traditional role. However, this source is advert aimed at women so it would say that they still only had traditional roles as this was what was expected at the time and it would be more likely that women would buy after seeing this advert as many people would agree with what it was saying. This makes me think that the source isn’t that reliable and that attitudes were actually changing towards women.

Here they have evaluated the source to help them answer the question - ‘In the period 1950-1975 there was little change in attitudes towards women.’

How far do the sources support this statement?

• Source B shows that there was a change in attitudes towards women as a girl here is working by breaking up old boats – which isn’t a traditional role for a woman. However this source is from a short film about an exceptional woman, which is why they’ve made the film about it, which makes me think that this was the exception and not the common thing, so attitudes towards women didn’t actually change.
