En Plein AirArt Studio

Enjoy the outdoors while creating beautiful landscape paint-ings in this painting workshop! En plein air is a French term meaning outdoors/in the open air. Painting en plein air is es-sentially about observing and painting subjects from life out-doors. This practice increased in popularity in the nineteenth century after the invention of tubes for oil paint. We will visit a different park every day and learn to compose landscapes us-ing the oil technique. Just like the nineteenth century Impres-sionists, we will concentrate on capturing the subtle impres-sions of the qualities of light and atmosphere.

Each day we will focus on tools and technique while also learn-ing about composition, drawing and editing. Course artists will also learn about color mixing, brushwork, and paint quality. We will share our work and perspectives with fellow artists.

WT will provide the expert instruction, transportation, can-vases, brushes, and paints…you will provide the talent, inter-pretation and vision to create your own unique works of art to display proudly in your home!

Make Your Mark:Engineering Solutions to Real-World Problems

Inventor Nikola Tesla stated, “I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success...”

When inventions are created to solve important problems and to help people in need, the thrill is exponentially greater. How will you make your mark? This summer course is designed to fuse aspects of the Maker Movement with engi-neering and design principles. Student inventors will gain skills in the areas of CAD modeling, 3D printing and scanning, problem-solving and collaboration, design and engineering, and presenting ideas.

Working in small groups, students will collaborate with each other and a mentor to design products that positively affect people. Students will learn CAD model-ing and each group will have a 3D printer at their disposal. Utilizing a human-centered approach to the engineering cycle, students will receive user- based feedback on their designs. The main goal is to iterate their products as many times as possible. A final “pitch” to the class, parents, and professionals will highlight each group’s journey coupled with a demonstration of their product.

2016 program mentors/partners included:• Doctors Without Borders• Occupational and Physical Therapists• Bike Pittsburgh• Prosthetics/Orthotics Designers

New program mentors/partners will be introduced in 2017.

#LIT Music Camp withHip-Hop on L.O.C.K.

Over the last forty years, hip-hop has evolved from a movement in in-ner-city streets to a force with prevalent role in our mainstream culture. Although rap and hip-hop were once considered the language of urban neighborhoods, we can no longer deny that elements of hip-hop have also become a part of our larger society’s culture and language. This camp will track the evolution of hip-hop’s elements into mainstream America by studying its rhetoric in real-world experiences. Through a partnership with Hip-Hop on L.O.C.K., we will examine rap lyrics as poetry; we will also develop an understanding that rap is an evolution of poetic structure and form. We will have hands-on experience examin-ing rhetoric through interaction with disc jockeys, emcees, b-boys, and graffiti artists. Students will work together with a guest producer to cre-ate and record a song at ID Labs, the same studio Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller have recorded in. If you love music and language, look no more. This will be one lit summer experience! #LITmusiccamp

About Hip-Hop on L.O.C.K.

Hip-Hop on L.O.C.K. is an award-winning arts education and mentor-ing program that employs Hip-Hop as a tool to educate and empower youth K-12 through Leadership Development, Organizational Skills, Co Operative Economics and Knowledge of the music business.

This program is implemented by each student being given an executive position of a mock record label to create a music CD project from con-ception to completion. Additionally, the students will produce and di-rect their own music video. Upon completion of Hip-Hop on L.O.C.K., students receive a certificate of completion followed by a live perfor-mance where students display their work in front of friends, family and the entire community. Upon completion of Hip-Hop on L.O.C.K., the graduates will have a full understanding of the art of Hip-Hop, as well as the entry-level skills needed to operate a business of their own.

Camp H2O:Summer fun and adventure on the water!

Campers join the crew of Steel City Rowing Club for a week-long Allegheny River adventure. After learning about boat and water safety, we will take to the water each day in kayaks and canoes to explore a new aspect of the river valley ecosystem.

Campers will investigate indicators of a healthy habitat along the river bank, take a Sycamore Island trek to explore 14 acres of reclaimed habitat on an uninhabited river island, and ex-plore Plum Creek in Dark Hollow to learn about the Allegh-eny River Watershed.

As the summer day heats up, we will spend the afternoon frol-icking in the water as we swim, paddleboard, and try out a real “single” sculling boat! We will spend the bulk of the day at the waterfront club. Campers will depart from WT each morning by 9:15am and will return in time for pick-up at 4:00 p.m. All campers should pack a lunch and a snack daily, and bring a swimsuit, beach towel, and a change of weather-appropriate clothes each day. It’s recommended also to bring a water bot-tle, hat or visor, sunscreen, and insect repellant.

Writer’s Workshop: City Journal

This unique writing adventure will be certain to please writers who want to improve skills while engaging in new experiences and making new friends. This weeklong intensive writing course has been created to stimulate creativity, reflection, self-expression and enthusiasm for writing!

Have you ever wondered how authors get ideas for their writing? They do so by experiencing, observing, engaging, notetaking, and reflection. Themes, relationships, and experiences inspire writing!

Young poets and writers will have the opportunity to create po-ems, stories and non-fiction pieces in a variety of settings. Each day of our writing adventure, we will visit a unique Pittsburgh lo-cation and will follow a different path and theme. Themes may include drama, nature, fantasy, graphic novels, history, and sports.

Our site visits each morning will engage students in physical and cerebral activities that are designed to support writing activities and assignments when we return to campus each afternoon to re-treat, write, revise, write, revise, and write more in a relaxed and fun environment! Prompts, constructive feedback, and voluntary readings will round off our time together each day.

By the end of our creative week together, students will leave with their own chapbook and inspiration to continue expressing thought and ideas through the written word!
