Introduction This report provides an overview of Queensland’s trade relationship with Vietnam.

Merchandise exports In 2016–17, Queensland’s merchandise exports to Vietnam were valued at $997.5 million, representing 1.5 per cent of Queensland’s total merchandise exports and 23.5 per cent of Australia’s total merchandise exports to Vietnam.

Major export items included Coal, coke and briquettes ($394.9 million), Live animals other than fish ($100.9 million), Textile fibres and their wastes ($100.1 million), Vegetables and fruit ($74.4 million) and Non-ferrous metals ($74.0 million).

Queensland’s merchandise exports to Vietnam grew by 40.8 per cent or $289.1 million, from $708.4 million in 2015–16 to $997.5 million in 2016–17.

Queensland’s merchandise exports to Vietnam grew by 268.6 per cent or $726.9 million, from $270.6 million in 2012–13 to $997.5 million in 2016–17.

Merchandise imports In 2016–17, Queensland’s merchandise imports from Vietnam were valued at $561.0 million, representing 1.4 per cent of Queensland’s total merchandise imports and 11.8 per cent of Australia’s total merchandise imports from Vietnam.

Major import items included Petroleum, petroleum products and related materials ($107.9 million), Telecommunications & sound recording equipment ($76.8 million), Furniture, parts thereof ($55.4 million), Fish and related products ($45.7 million) and Coffee, tea, cocoa, spices, and manufactures thereof ($36.6 million).

Queensland’s merchandise imports from Vietnam grew by 49.9 per cent or $186.8 million, from $374.1 million in 2015–16 to $561.0 million in 2016–17.

Queensland’s merchandise imports from Vietnam declined by 4.3 per cent or $25.0 million, from $586.0 million in 2012–13 to $561.0 million in 2016–17.

Service trade Australia's services exports to Vietnam grew by 38.3 per cent or $399 million, from $1,043 million in 2012–13 to $1,442 million in 2016–17. Australia's services imports from Vietnam grew by 34.5 per cent or $345 million for the same period to a total of $1,345 million.

Queensland's total service exports to all countries grew by 36.7 per cent or $3,555 million, from $9,680 million in 2012–13 to $13,235 million in 2016–17. Queensland's total service imports from all countries grew by 4.8 per cent or $552 million for the same period to a total of $12,018 million.

Tourism International visitors to Queensland from Vietnam increased by 45.4 per cent or 2,375 tourists, from 5,229 tourists in 2015–16 to 7,604 tourists in 2016–17.

International students International student enrolments in Queensland from Vietnam decreased by 7 per cent or 182 students, from 2,616 students in 2015 to 2,434 students in 2016.
