2012 Olympics on our doorstepThe 2012 Olympics are taking place very closeto Queen Mary’s Mile End campus, and ourWhitechapel and West Smithfield campuses arealso not far away. Barts Hospital, the new RoyalLondon Hospital and our associated Trusts willprovide healthcare for the Olympic athletes andthe general public during the summer games.This will be an exciting time to be in London.

Barts and The London is part of Queen Mary,the only College of the University of London tooffer extensive campus-based facilities. State-of-the-art clinical facilitiesWe have modern state-of-the art buildingsalongside more traditional teaching facilitiessuch as our fantastic library. The Dental Schoolnow contains a clinical skills laboratory whichclosely simulates the real clinical experienceand is an invaluable learning facility, helpingnew students equip themselves for later work inthe Clinic. A major part of the new RoyalLondon Hospital will be completed by 2012and will include London’s leading trauma andemergency care centre, one of Europe’s largestrenal services and one of the UK's biggest paediatric services.

Why Law? A degree in law is highly regarded byemployers of all kinds. Not only does it prepareyou for a career in law, if that is what youdesire, but it also requires you to consider thesocial, political, and economic significance ofissues beyond the subject. This equips youwith a wide range of abilities suitable to almostany job, such as:

It is easy to underestimate the value oftransferrable skills. LawM100 LLB (three years)

This is the traditional LLB course. It includes all the core subjects required to satisfy the BarCouncil and Law Society requirements. In thefirst year you will take all core modules, whilstthe second and third years offer a broad rangeof optional modules to allow you to widen yourinterests.

Fluency is important if you are planning to live abroad. If you want to study in a differentlanguage then you should be prepared to attendsome language classes here during your firsttwo years.

The third year of the programmeis spent as an exchange student in the Facultyof Law at HKU, where students follow aprogramme of legal study (tuition is in English).This will provide students with a globalperspective, which is appealing to employers, as well as promoting personal growth anddevelopment.

Please note that this programme is not availablethrough UCAS, you should apply for the regularLLB and you will have the opportunity totransfer once you are enrolled.

What to expectA lot of our applicants want to know what toexpect when they join the university. We havecompiled sample timetables on the followingfew pages and one or two other useful pieces of information that we hope will help.

Before committing yourself to work placementsor buying books – we suggest waiting until youhave your final timetable and are fully enrolledso that you have all the facts. You won’t beexpected to turn up knowing everything!

Course structureYou will have four core modules in the first year(five for Senior Status students); each of thesewill consist of two hours of lectures and a one-hour tutorial per week. Tutorial classes are held in small groups of up to 12 students.Assessment is generally exam-based, with one or two of the optional modules containing a coursework element.

Entry requirementsEntry to the School of Law is highly competitive;as a result we look at your application as awhole. Academic entry requirements are a goodbasis for a law degree, but applications are alsoassessed on your personal statement andreference. We never guarantee an offer beforeone of our selectors has reviewed yourapplication as a whole, and it has been checkedby the Admissions office. If you have anyqueries about the application process or youracademic suitability then please contact us.

Working during your studiesSome students decide to work during theirdegree. We would suggest trying at least thefirst few weeks without a job, so that you have agood understanding of the workload involved inyour studies. A part-time job is not impossible,but don’t forget you will have a lot of reading todo. We expect you to be available between 9amand 6pm during weekdays for timetabling, butwe make sure to keep your Wednesdayafternoons free as universities have a tradition of taking part in sports at that time. You shouldbe doing around 40 hours a week study,including your contact hours.

Legal Advice CentreThe School’s Legal Advice Centre (LAC) offersfree legal advice to the local community. Ourlaw students work alongside solicitors from theCity to advise our clients on the strength oftheir case, and provide them with anunderstanding of the legal issues andprocesses that need following.

Our studentsOur advisers are selected via application, andundergo an extensive training programme withlegal professionals, academic staff, and theQueen Mary Careers service. Once trained, you will have the opportunity to apply your legalknowledge in a practical context, includinginterviewing clients and researching their case.You will also be able to compete for one of the many work placements and mentoringopportunities the LAC offers with top City firms.

Our networkWe work with over 80 solicitors from Londonfirms such as Reed Smith, Mischon de Reya,Bross Bennet, Simmons & Simmons, FieldFisher Waterhouse and many more. We alsohave connections with criminal law specialists15 New Bridge Street Chambers and a wide

range of other organisations such as LawyersWithout Borders. These professionals work withus by supporting our client work and investingin the development of our Student Advisers.

Our clientsThe clients who use our service are usuallymembers of the public and staff or studentsfrom Queen Mary. We are able to advise on awide range of different issues, with the aim ofequipping our clients with the legal knowledgethey need and an indication of the viability oftheir case. Graduate Student AdvisersThe Graduate Student Advisers (GSAs) are ateam of friendly and experienced postgraduatestudents who are on hand to listen to yourconcerns and are able to provide all students in the Law Department with advice on issuesrelating to your university experience.

The GSAs provide advice on a number ofstudy-related topics, including:

• essay / exam questions

• study skills

• careers and CVs

• exam technique

• work/life balance

• time management

They also run drop-in sessions four days aweek and everything discussed with a GSA is confidential. Workshops are well attendedthroughout the year and cover a number ofstudy-related topics, including essay writing,revision and exam techniques.

Academic SupportWhen you arrive in September you will beassigned an academic adviser, who is there to support you throughout your studies. Theyhave weekly office hours and are on hand togive academic advice, discuss your work, andhelp you interpret essay and exam feedback.Unlike school or sixth form college, you areexpected to work independently at university,and some students find this transition a littledaunting at first. Your academic adviser will beavailable to give you guidance and advice, sobe sure to make the most of their knowledgeand expertise.

Mooting at Queen MaryMooting at Queen Mary is a long establishedtradition. Our students are very successful inexternal moots, this year beating over 70 otheruniversities to win the coveted OxfordUniversity Press Moot 2014. We also host theannual George Hinde Moot which has beenrunning for over 40 years.

What is mooting?Mooting is the verbal presentation of a legalissue or problem. It's an exercise designed to give students the closest experience toappearing in court.

What kind of events do you run?The main event overseen by the MootingSociety is the internal George Hinde Moot. This is open to students from all years of thelaw school, from complete beginners trying outtheir legal advocacy skills for the first time, tomore experienced students. The competition is comprised of 7 rounds with all studentsprogressing to the second. Alongside the actual moots, students are invited to take partin workshops and receive feedback on theirperformances.

Do you have any professionalcontacts/networks?Many experienced lawyers are involved with mooting as part of their pro bono work.Contacts involve academics who judge earlierrounds, barristers who participate in workshopsand judges such as Sir Stanley Burnton, LordHoffman and Lord Leveson.

Have you won any awards? In the external competitions Queen Mary were once again finalists in the 2014 LondonUniversity Mooting Shield competition for the6th year running beating KCL and LSE. A teamfrom Queen Mary also competed in the grandfinal of the Oxford University Press competitionin July 2014, beating Oxford, Cambridge andLSE. We have won the Thomas A FinlayCompetition in Ireland every year we haveentered bar one.

On a personal level, how has the society helped you?This year I was a finalist in the prestigiousGeorge Hinde Moot and winner of the FirstYear Cup. It has improved my confidencegreatly and also enabled me to get morepractical experience of legal advocacy.

Queen Mary Pro Bono SocietyThe Queen Mary Pro Bono Society (QMPBS)has the primary focus of increasing access tojustice and understanding of the law. We seekto engage members by providing volunteering,fundraising and networking opportunities.

What can members get involved with?Members participate in a range of activitiessuch as volunteering and fundraising for theWhitechapel Mission and Holy Cross Centre;assisting solicitors from City law firms at freelegal advice clinics; organising second handbook sales and supporting environmentalprojects such as Energy for Old Fadama andFIELD. Our opportunities focus on increasingaccess to justice both at home and abroad. Weaim to give legal support to the less fortunate inour immediate community by going into localschools and community centres to help spreadawareness about topical issues.

This year we created an internship with Refuge,a domestic violence charity and another withAmicus-ALJ, a charity that helps providerepresentation for those facing the deathpenalty in the USA. We also use our funding tooffer subsidised placements in Singapore,Australia, India, Ghana, South Africa andCyprus which involve providing legal advice toprison inmates, documenting country profilesand carrying out legal research.

What does Energy for Old Fadama do?Energy for Old Fadama (EFOF) was founded by students in the Pro Bono society and is aninitiative that provides a safe and sustainablesource of electricity through solar panels toresidents of Ghana's largest slum. So far, theyhave electrified 32 different community

buildings and employed 20 people to maintainthe solar panels and sell solar products,generating an income and empowering womenand men living in difficult conditions.

The International Placements departmentwithin QMPBS has an internship program withthe Fadama Legal Assistance Program (FLAP).As part of the legal internship with FLAP,students also have the opportunity to assistwith EFOF by surveying panels, raising fundsfor new panels, and providing ideas on how tofurther develop the social enterprise.

What is The Advocate?The Advocate is the Pro Bono Society’snewspaper, providing a platform for students toexpress their views on legal issues and engagewith current events. Queen Mary Law SocietyThe Law Society is one of the largest societiesat Queen Mary and currently has 440members. The Society offers guidance to allstudents considering a career in the legalsector. As members of the Society, studentsgain exposure to all possible legal careers fromworking for a City firm to being part of an in-house legal team.

Meenal Selvaratnam, president of the LawSociety, tells us more…A legal degree provides countless opportunitiesand it is the aim of the Law Society to exposestudents to as many of those as possible.Working closely with QM Careers we host anumber of networking events with some of thebest law firms. Currently eleven City law firmsand two of the best professional law schools inLondon sponsor us. In addition to this we alsohost an annual Negotiation Competition, thelargest student-run competition on campus, aswell as many social events including theinaugural Queen Mary Law Ball in 2014.

How has the Law Society benefitted you? I have been a part of the Law Society since Istarted here at Queen Mary. It has been a greatexperience both socially and with regards to myprospective career in the legal industry byhelping me to develop the skills andopportunities necessary for an enjoyable andprosperous time at university and beyond.

The Queen Mary Law JournalThe Queen Mary Law Journal (QMLJ) is acollection of essays and academic articlespublished annually by the Queen Mary LawSociety. It is an entirely student-run publication,with both its leadership and editorial boarddrawn from the student body at Queen MaryUniversity of London. Founded in 1998 and re-introduced in 2010, the journal’s primarycommitment is to offer an avenue for studentsand practitioners of the law to publish work thatfalls outside the scope of the typical legalcurriculum.

Queen Mary Bar Society The Bar Society at Queen Mary is a proactivestudent society with the fundamental purposeof preparing Queen Mary law students for acareer as a barrister, or who want to learn moreabout the Bar. Currently they haveapproximately 150 members.

We asked their President, Alex Davidson, to giveus more information about who they are andwhat they do…The purpose of the Society is to educatestudents about a life at the bar, including theapplication process, the areas of practice andthe practical realities of work and finance. Weprovide students with the opportunity to learnabout the bar, allowing them to form their ownpersonal links with the profession throughactivities such as networking and social events,workshops, trips, competitions and paneldebates.

What is the most exciting aspect of the Bar Society?That would have to be the Blackstone WrittenAdvocacy Competition where the lucky winnergiven a coveted mini-pupillage at BlackstoneChambers. This year we had a record numberof entries. We also arranged a debate onassisted dying, which a number of prominentbarristers attended, including David Perry, QC.

On a personal level, how has the society helped you?The society has helped me reach the firmdecision I want to pursue a career at the Bar. It has also helped cast light on the process ofapplying for pupillage and the various avenuesof funding. Having a committee position hasallowed me to develop and obtain new skills aswell as meet new people who soon becamevery good friends!

What are the benefits of being part of the Bar Society?Being in London we are fortunate enough to be very close to the Inns and Chambers, whichhas enabled us to forge strong ties withnumerous sets, spanning a wide range ofpractice areas. We are invited to formal dinnersevery year at all the Inns, as well as receivingtheir sponsorship and the opportunity tonetwork with, and learn from, some of the bestlegal minds in the country. We are committedto supporting and encouraging our membersby equipping them with practical informationand advice to help demystify the Bar, making it more accessible and less daunting.

Senior Status SocietyGeared towards the students on the SeniorStatus LLB programme, the Society’s aim is tosupport their members both socially andacademically throughout their time at QueenMary. They currently have approximately 95members.

Carolyn Minaudo, current President of theSenior Status Society explains their mission…We strive to provide support to all Senior Statusstudents through offering advice and guidancewith coursework, as well as providing careerevents and external opportunities specific toSenior Status students. We acknowledge thatmany of our students are international andhave different career objectives from other lawstudents at Queen Mary so we include someevents tailored to these needs.

Another of our aims is to promote cohesionamongst current Senior Status students from allyears, as well as to create a strong network ofSenior Status alumni, allowing for our studentsto remain connected throughout theirprofessional futures.

How would a new student get involved?The Senior Status Society is open to everySenior Status student, and all are encouragedto join. It’s an opportunity to socialise withothers in the program, regardless of yourtutorial group or year. If you have questionsabout the programme or are struggling withcourse work, it’s an informal avenue to seekguidance and talk to people who are or were insimilar situations. Women Working in Law SocietyOne of the newest student-led initiatives in thedepartment, the WWL society seeks to educatethe student body on the unique challengeswomen face in the pursuit of a legal career.

Ciara Henry, this year’s president fills us in onhow they got started and what they’ve been upto this year...

Where did the idea come from?Most law firms have set up some form ofgender initiative to increase diversity; wewanted to bring that to university level to helpstudents learn about the obstacles womenmight face throughout their legal careers.

How do you go about that?Panel evenings, we held a discussion withmembers of the Women Lawyer’s Division, andone with female barristers. We host CV andinterview workshops as well as educationaltalks. For example a diversity roadblocks in lawtalk with Sasha Scott, vacation scheme andtraining contract workshop with Gwyn Day andcareer talk with Vanessa Vallely on womenworking in the City.

What is the best thing your society has organised this year?Our opening event in conjunction with theWomen Lawyer’s Division was one of our bestevents. WLD invited us to the Law Society for adrinks and food reception, followed by a paneldiscussion with a variety of female lawyers andbusiness women, and a talk from Mary-AnnWright, Chair of the WLD.

What opportunities do you offer your members?As part of the ‘We are the City’ network wehave exclusive access to events held in the Cityfor women who wish to work in law. This yearsociety members had the chance to attend a‘legal speed dating’ event that would otherwisehave only been accessible to fully qualifiedlawyers. Our current members have been ableto acquire legal mentors in areas of law such asfamily law and tax law through these schemes.

ELSA QMULELSA QMUL is the first local ELSA groupestablished in London. ELSA (The EuropeanLaw Students’ Association) is the world’s largestlaw students’ association; it is comprised ofmore than 41,000 members across the globeincluding students and recent graduates whoare interested in academic and personalexcellence in addition to their studies at theiruniversities.

We provide our members with opportunities toenhance their legal knowledge on a variety oflaw-related topics. Some of the events weorganised this year included: Careers at theEU, Freedom of Expression and the Internet,Securitization and the Financial Crisis, Privacyand Security after the War on Terrorism as wellas panel discussions on the topics of Is an LLMWorth Doing?, A UK Bill of Rights, is it the rightthing? and many more.

There is something for everyone; legalplacements, academic competitions, summerlaw schools, EU institution visits and of coursesome socials!

What opportunities do you offer your members?Being a member of ELSA QMUL gives studentsaccess to the various global opportunitiesprovided by ELSA, some of these arementioned below, but there are so many it’simpossible to list them all!

The Student Trainee Exchange Programme(STEP) is a paid work experience programmeranging from 2 weeks to 2 years in any lawrelated area. STEP makes it possible for lawstudents and young lawyers to gain workingexperience abroad.

There are also ELSA delegates who are giventhe opportunity to sit next to national delegatesand representatives of some of the mostimportant NGOs and observe how decisionsand policies are created at international level,deepening participants’ knowledge the issuesdiscussed.

Study Visits provide ELSA members with apossibility to visit ELSA groups in othercountries and in return host groups at ouruniversity.

As part of ELSA QMUL, our members canparticipate in law schools which ELSAInternational organises all over Europe. Each of the law schools is based on a different topicand based in different cities. They include agreat academic program as well as an excellentsocial program. CareersWe recognise that the majority of our studentsstudy law because they are looking to enter theprofession after graduation. As such, QueenMary invests a lot of resources into specialisedcareers events, such as law fairs, workshops,and the opportunity to network and apply forplacements through the student societies andLegal Advice Centre. A Queen Mary law degreeis well regarded by City firms, and will give youa solid foundation for a career in the legalsector.

Soon after you enrol at Queen Mary, you willmeet the dedicated law adviser from theCareers Team, who is regularly availablethroughout your studies for one-to-one advice and support sessions.

This one-year training course usually takesplace in specialised professional colleges. If you have secured a training contract, manyemployers will pay for this and tailor your

curriculum to their needs.

Legal Practice Course (LPC)

The equivalent of an LPC but for aspiringbarristers. As barristers are self-employed youshould look for a scholarship from one of theInns to cover your course fees if you can.

Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC)

Training contracts are two years long and arespent working in a law firm. Consider it as asort of apprenticeship where you will learn theareas of law you will practise, and experiencethe profession first hand. It is worth applying for training contracts with firms working in

your area of interest.

In order to complete the final stage ofqualification, you will complete a further year,usually broken into two six-month periods known as ‘sixes’. The first is non-practising and the second is practising; you will begin by observing your supervisor, followed by thesecond six where you will manage your own

caseload.

Bursaries and scholarshipsEach year we offer a number of bursaries to our students to encourage them in theiracademic achievement and contribution to theSchool. Bursaries are available to students inall years, and across all the courses we offer.They are renewable for your remaining years of study at the discretion of the Bursariescommittee.

The bursaries are currently worth £1,000 per year, and the application process beginsonce you are enrolled. We also offer anundergraduate scholarship of £2,000, whichyou can apply for upon enrolment.

William and Mary ScholarshipThe William and Mary Scholarship is anopportunity offered to all final year students in the School of Law. It is a chance to take anLLM course at the College of William and Mary,one of the oldest colleges in the USA. Thecampus is situated in surrounding woodland,and based in downtown Williamsburg, Virginia.

The Scholarship covers your return air fare, alltuition fees, the cost of accommodation andfood, and a stipend equivalent to the Britishpostgraduate students’ grant.

The whole experience was an eyeopener and was academically

Public EngagementThe Public Engagement programme is focussed on developing a range ofopportunities and events aimed towards social enterprise, cultural capital and activecitizenship.

The School of Law and the legal profession are ideally positioned to develop publicengagement, both in terms of policy andproject work. With this in mind, we plan to expand our activities in this area with a viewto training and developing students to leadprojects with local schools, the East Endcommunity, and the profession as a whole.

In 2014/15 student ambassadors willparticipate in a wide ranging programme based on promoting creativity, innovation and leadership.

Student accommodationQueen Mary is a campus based university,which means that you can live a five minutewalk away from your 9am lectures.

The award-winning Student Village plays hostto almost 2000 rooms, all of which are self-catered houses, flats, and maisonettes. Themajority of the rooms are en-suite, but sharedbathroom facilities are also available at a lowerprice. You will share a kitchen with 4-11 otherstudents depending on the room type youchoose. En-suite rooms contain a shower room,under-desk fridge/freezer and plenty of storagespace. For both types of room you will have awireless broadband connection and dailycommunal cleaning service.

Queen Mary also has around 125 roomsreserved in the University of LondonIntercollegiate Halls. Students staying here willget breakfast and an evening meal providedduring the week, with lunch at the weekend.They are located in Central London between

Russell Square and Covent Garden; you will be living amongst students from the otherUniversity of London Colleges whilst still in easy reach of Mile End by tube.

Other options include private halls, situated a stone’s throw away from campus, or rentedhousing. The residences team are on hand toadvise you should you need any help, and havea housing guide and a list of trustworthylandlords too.

There are hundreds of clubs andsocieties to choose from, and these are a greatway to get to know people with shared interestsor try something new. From the Cheese Society to ‘Green Mary’, a society for theenvironmentalists among you, there issomething for everyone; and if you can’t find aclub to join, you can set one up. QMSU run anumber of events throughout the year; theExam Stress programme was a favourite thisyear, with a petting zoo and the Guide Dogs forthe Blind puppies making an appearance oncampus!

Club SportQueen Mary regularly competes against othercollege teams, and QMSU has over 60 sportsteams. There is a regular social night for theteams to meet and get to know each other; it isa great way to make new friends. A number ofthe teams also go on tour to other countries.

QMotionThe QMotion gym is a state-of-the-art healthand fitness centre, equipped with a wide rangeof exercise machines and weights. There’s awomen-only section, and full programme of classes, including spinning and pilates. If you’re a bit exercise shy or just not sure howto push yourself further, a QMotion personaltrainer will set you a unique programmetailored to your needs.

Shops and restaurantsAs a campus university we have a number ofshops, cafés, and restaurants on site. From theVillage Shop just outside the halls, to Mucci’s,our Italian restaurant in Library Square, youwon’t go without a good meal, a place to hang

out, or somewhere to buy an emergency tin ofbaked beans! There is a superstore situatedwithin a 20 minute walk from campus, or justminutes away on the tube, and a number ofsmaller convenience stores on every corner.

LibraryThe Mile End library offers a diverse range ofstudy environments and plenty of resources tosupport your learning. The School of Law has a dedicated librarian who is responsible forensuring the latest journals and text books areavailable, and will endeavour to get hold ofanything that isn’t. The library is open sevendays a week and operates 24/7 opening hoursduring the exam period. As a QM student you will also have access to the University of London Library at Senate House, which has one of the largest humanities and socialscience collections in the UK.

Advice and CounsellingAs well as the academic and personal supportyou will receive in the School you will haveaccess to the Queen Mary Advice andCounselling service. Their services are free and confidential, and many are available toapplicants as well as current students. Theadvice given includes finances, housing rights,immigration law and so on. Counselling is alsoavailable on a one-to-one basis or in groups,and includes weekly therapy sessions or as aone-off appointments.

Health servicesAll students living within the London Boroughof Tower Hamlets have access to the healthservices on campus. You should register withthe Globe Town surgery via the Student HealthCentre at the start of term. Students livingoutside Tower Hamlets can be treated oncampus in case of emergency.
