Unique Student Identifier (USI)
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters (e.g. 1X2YW55YP9) that gives students access to their online USI account. A USI will allow an
individual's USI account to be linked to the National Vocational Education and Training (VET) Data Collection allowing an individual to see all of their training results from all providers
including all completed training units and qualifications.
From 1 January 2015 if you are undertaking nationally recognised training you will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This includes all students who are continuing a course
they started prior to 2015, and all new students. Before completing this form, students should review the Fact Sheet: Student Information for the Unique Student Identifier available at
the USI website www.usi.gov.au/students.
Creating your own USI IMPORTANT:
A USI is free and easy to create online. You can create your own USI
or Abbey College Australia can create one for you as a part of the
enrolment process.
To make sure we keep all of your training records together, the USI will be linked to your name as it appears on the
form of ID you used to create the USI. The personal details entered when you create a USI must match exactly with
those on your form of ID. If you do not have proof of ID from the list above, contact Abbey College Australia
administration office to learn about other acceptable forms of ID to obtain a USI.
Follow these 8 steps if you would like to create your own USI:
ID List
• Driver’s Licence
• Medicare Card
• Australian Passport
• Visa (with Non-Australian Passport) for
international students
• Birth Certificate (Australian)
• Certificate Of Registration By Descent
• Citizenship Certificate
• ImmiCard
International students in Australia
If you are an international student studying in
Australia with an Australian training organisation
you will need a USI from 1 January 2015.
All international students in Australia will have
been issued with an Australian Visa. This will let
you use your passport as proof of ID when
creating your USI.
Step 1 Have two forms of identification (ID) ready from the ID List
Step 2 Have your personal contact details ready (e.g. email address, or mobile number, or address).
Step 3 Visit the USI website at: http://www.usi.gov.au/create-your-USI/Pages/default.aspx
Step 4 Select the ‘Create a USI’ link and follow the steps.
Step 5 Agree to the Terms and Conditions
Step 6
Follow the instructions to create a USI – it should only take a few minutes. Upon
completion, the USI will be displayed on the screen. It will also be sent to your preferred
method of contact.
Step 7 Write down the USI and keep it somewhere handy and safe.
Step 8 Once you create your own USI, you should provide your USI to Abbey College Australia as
soon as possible so that you’re USI can be verified and records updated.
